*NSA Boss Takes Fight against 'Kush and Crime in Sports' to Calaba Town*

By Ibrahim Mansaray

NSA Boss Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai has taken the collective fight against Kush and Crime in sport to Calaba Town using community league as a conduit.

This came two months after Grafton kush addicts had called on him to help with medical treatment and to create the enabling environment that will spur their return to football.

The youths highlighted the recent transformation of sports in Sierra Leone, especially in football, and credited Dr. Abdulai's leadership which has made sport an enticing destination.

They believe that with a vision for sports, they can overcome their challenges and make a difference.

Two months ago, he brought together eighty sports administrators from 59 sporting associations to contribute to the wellbeing of the Anti-doping Act and Position of Trust Regulation, all which aim at promoting sports.

The National Sports Authority is an agency of Government established by an Act of Parliament with the mandate to promote, encourage, develop, and supervise all sports and sporting activities in Sierra Leone and to provide for other related matters.

*NSA Boss Initiates Conversation to Start Paying National Coaches across Performing Sporting Disciplines*

By Ibrahim Mansaray

The Executive Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, has initiated groundbreaking negotiations to start paying national coaches from all performing sporting disciplines.

The move, when completed, will enhance commitment from coaches, boost regular guided, trainings and bring to the fore competitive recruitment based on NSA's guidelines.

This all-out success will help monitor the progress of talents and upscale the country's chances of securing gold in international tournaments.

As engagements are underway, Dr Abdulai said National Sports Organizations (NSOs) should move from just participating, which has little force, to competing for global slots through winning.

“We are now in a new era. NSOs should regard sport as a serious business by organizing national competitions to express presence and tap raw talents, adhere to good governance structures, and perform internationally. It is through these mechanisms that Government can come in to help.

“The Government is ever committed to investing in sports and in young people. It has created thousands of jobs and enhanced the lives of many through this means," the NSA Boss remarked.

His first blow to pull this initiative off saw his push for the payment of Leone Stars coaches from crippling quarterly basis to monthly. Such a boost gave rise to the good results Sierra Leone earned against Djibouti and Burkina Faso in the FIFA World Cup Qualifier.

The National Sports Authority is an agency of Government established by an Act of Parliament with the mandate to promote, encourage, develop, and supervise all sports and sporting activities in Sierra Leone and to provide for other related matters.

By Ibrahim Mansaray

The Paramount Chief of Jawie Chiefdom, Musa Ngombukula Kallon, on Sunday led his chiefdom authorities and the youth to welcome NSA's Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai Esq and his team to his Jawie Chiefdom, Daru.

The visit was part of Dr. Abdulai's regional tour to assess sporting facilities.

At his court barry in Daru, PC Kallon described the day as joyful for him and his townsmen. “We are extremely happy to see the NSA visit the class A Chiefdom. As authorities, we will support the only sports authority in the country in its strides to improve our existing sporting facilities," he said.

Addressing all, Dr. Abdulai said he was appointed by President Bio 110 days ago to head the NSA, the country's sports agency.

“The mandate of the NSA is to develop, promote, supervise, and regulate all sports in the country.
In order to deliver these, we need to construct new sporting facilities and improve the existing ones.

“As a leader, I mobilized my team to go round the country and assess the state of the available sporting facilities first hand. We came to Daru because of it strategic location in Kailahun District.

“With the right infrastructure, we can attract more people to participate in sports," Dr. Abdulai told Jawie authorities.

Jawie Chiefdom Youth Leader Andrew Fartorma expressed his delight over the NSA visit, marking the first time sport officials have popped into the Chiefdom on a sport-related activity.

"Being a class A Chiefdom in Kailahun District, we are ready to support the activities of the NSA, especially towards improving the only community playing field in Daru," he surmised.

*The Menace of Hate Speech: A Threat to Democratic Peace in Sierra Leone*

By Ibrahim Mansaray

In recent times, Sierra Leone has seen an unfortunate resurgence of hate speech, with public figures like Chief Kadiru Kaikai playing prominent roles. His recent remarks, laden with vitriol and divisiveness, serve as a stark reminder of how destructive rhetoric can undermine the fragile peace and democracy we strive to build. While I am not an activist, the gravity of such actions compels me to speak out against those who seek public attention at the expense of our nation's stability and harmony.

Hate speech is more than just offensive language; it is a calculated weapon designed to sow discord, incite violence, and destabilize societies. Chief Kaikai's comments are not mere expressions of opinion but deliberate attempts to fracture the social fabric of Sierra Leone. Such rhetoric stands in stark opposition to the principles of democracy and peaceful coexistence, principles that countless Sierra Leoneans have fought to uphold.

In a democratic society, freedom of speech is a cherished right. However, this right is not absolute and comes with the responsibility to use it wisely. Speech that incites hatred and violence has no place in a democracy. It is akin to shouting "fire" in a crowded theatre, causing panic and chaos. Chief Kaikai's remarks are the verbal equivalent of such reckless behaviour, stirring up tensions and jeopardizing the peace we have worked so hard to achieve.

The consequences of hate speech are profound and far-reaching. It erodes trust among citizens, polarizes communities, and can even lead to physical violence. Sierra Leone's history is marred by civil conflict, and we must remain vigilant against any forces that seek to reignite those dark times. Individuals like Chief Kaikai, who use their platforms to spread hatred, are not patriots but saboteurs of our national unity and progress.

Patriotism is about more than waving flags and singing

By Ibrahim Mansaray

Freetown, 28th June 2024—The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Labour Congress and the Sierra Leone Employers' Federation, has successfully concluded regional stakeholder consultations for the National Social Protection Bill.

This extensive engagement process was aimed at gathering comprehensive input from a wide array of social protection stakeholders to help shape the forthcoming legislation.

Funded by the World Bank, these consultations emphasized inclusive participation to ensure that the new legal framework for social protection in Sierra Leone is robust and representative of all voices.

The proposed bill seeks to establish a Social Protection Authority, which will coordinate interventions from both private and public sectors. This Authority will oversee the Social Protection Bread Basket, a dedicated fund to support social protection activities, from which implementing agencies can request resources for their respective programmes

The consultations spanned all regions of Sierra Leone, concluding in the Western Area. Participants included representatives from various public and private sector entities, reflecting a strong communal endorsement for the initiative.

In his keynote address at opening ceremony of the two days exercise in Freetown yesterday, the Deputy Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Lansana Mohamed Dumbuya, highlighted the ambitious goals set forth by the African Union's African Strategy on Social Protection.
He noted that the Strategy aims to increase social protection coverage from the current average of 17% to 40% by 2025.

Big Sister of Alhaji Amadu Bah, also known as King Boss La, Isatu Bah has recently addressed the people of Sierra Leone regarding the numerous challenges her younger brother has been facing.

According to her, she believes that the problems her brother is facing are not due to him being a problematic person, but rather due to the company he keeps. She emphasized that the people surrounding him are the root cause of his problems.

Additionally, she mentioned that alcohol is another major contributor to his issues. Isatu Bah expressed her frustration with the constant problems her brother brings to the family, stating that she is tired of constantly having to act as the matriarch of the household.

She kindly requested that those who follow her brother refrain from doing so in order to allow him to have some peace of mind. Isatu Bah also reflected on the recent incident where LAJ was taken into custody for five days, which she believes was a great injustice. She concluded by urging King Boss La to take care of himself and avoid any activities that may cause him problems, as she is tired of constantly having to plead for mercy on his behalf.
