I am extremely disappointed to see that hardly anyone of my Chicago freinds has posted ANYTHING about Local School Councils. I see A WHOLE LOT about Republicans, who have near-ZERO power in the city, ESPECIALLY here in Bronzeville. ( Marc Kaplan is running for Uplift in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, and Patricia Andreina Perez will do a fabulous job with Woodson Elementary and DrStacy Alexander Brown and Julienne Thomas-Hall will be among those doing a great job for Burnside Scholastic Academy)
but Local School Councils, which Mayor Harold Washington set up, have been provided so WE can have LOCAL and PARENTAL control of the schools. Now, I know our general elections are essentially a lock, and even our Democratic primary (where are leaders are REALLY decided) had SEVERAL “no-contest contests) … but certainly for many of my local schools in Bronzeville, our vote REALLY WILL make a difference, especially is the parents are disengaged.
Now, we voters can ONLY choose 5 candidates, but they can be ANY combination. So if you wanted to do all parents, or 2 community and 3 parents, or 1 community and 4 parents, or even any number less than 5…. That’s up to you.
But what will happen is that the top 2 community representatives and top 6 parents will represent us on the council (teachers will decide 2, non-teacher staff will select one, elementary students get 1 choice while high school students get 3 representatives; also the principal will be on).
I am VERY willing to hear YOUR thoughts on any candidates for the following schools:
- Dunbar High school (3 community out of 2 selected)
- Graham, High school (3 community out of 2 selected)
- King, High school0
- Phillips High school (3 community out of 2 selected)
On the elementary side, I would recommend Patricia Perez for Community Representative. She would be great for my local school.
Now CHRISTOPHER elementary School is in a bizarre situation (which seems to happen to at least 1 school every election). It is in Back of the Yards, but its boundaries are form Pershing to 71st, and then Pulaski all the way to the lake. And perhaps the school community sees that, because they have 8 parent candidates and 4 community. SO here , your vote REALLY makes a difference. I would DEFINITELY love recommendations here!

Your home address falls within an elementary and high school attendance boundary: these are your neighborhood schools. You have the option to send your child to this elementary school and high school.
