Smarten UP! Records and Get to the Point Editions -- publisher of award-winning poetry, graphics and Smarten Up!

is the name of the fanzine Jean Smith started in the early 80s. The zine turned into a record label when it came time to release Mecca Normal's first LP. Get to the Point is the small press David Lester started in 1993 to publish Jean Smith's first novel. The label and the press are still active, disseminating fiction, award-winning poetry, graphics and music projects by community activists.

30 years ago we published Jean Smith - Writer's first novel "I Can Hear Me Fine" (1993).

The book went on to be distributed by Arsenal Pulp Press.

It was a thrill to see people who came to our shows standing at the merch table reading the book! By late 1993, Mecca Normal had 6 LPs out, but this was the first book.
