News 8 Investigates WFAA is the leading television news organization in Texas, and its investigative unit is among the most decorated in the country.

News 8's investigative team has won multiple Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Batons, the equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize in broadcast journalism. In 2009, the team became the first local television station in the United States to win a Gold Baton, the highest duPont honor, for a trio of stories that exposed grade changing by failing high school athletes, dangers posed by aging gas pip

eline couplings and corruption and waste at the federal Export-Import Bank. The team has exposed fraud in Medicaid dentistry, for-profit schools and the workers compensation system, uncovered a Dallas police scandal involving corrupt informants, and highlighted improper collusion between local police and the national television news magazine "To Catch A Predator." The team consists of reporters Brett Shipp and Charlotte Huffman, producer Jason Trahan, and chief photographer and video editor Mark Muller.

July 7, 2016, was one of the most tragic days in American law enforcement. Five police officers were ambushed and killed in downtown Dallas. The incident ended with a SWAT standoff with the killer. Tanya Eiserer sat down with Dallas police negotiator Larry Gordon and talked to him about his efforts to broker a peaceful surrender with the gunman, who at one point implored him to kill his fellow officers.
