Something special happened tonight that I was thrilled to witness. I wish I had the courage/stamina to take the #pacificpolarplunge2020 orchestrated by @ronisebastian and @nickisebastian but I take my role as a documentarian very seriously. First day of the new decade, the sunset, a beach bonfire, a collection of the most inspiring, creative, and big hearted people I have met to do this funny thing. It was the perfect way to start the New Year. Grateful to you lovely people in my life and now you have a hashtag Roni!

The full tiny guest bathroom reveal is better in video than stills. The shower was tiled with @zia_tile terra rose zellige tile as the feature wall to pick up the rouge tones in the vanity stone. The side wet walls of the shower are @zia_tile 4”x8” Reality Check cement tile in bone to add playfulness in neutral tones and keep the space from feeling too serious. I had leftover 2”x2” @zia_tile mosaic zellige tile from the kitchen island front and cut those into 6” squares to create a subtle checked pattern of Casablanca White and Glazed Earth on the shower floor. The vintage wood mirror with the brass faucet and light fixture give it an older feel to connect with the more traditional wallpaper. It’s a lot to process, but you can see how my brain worked this out to tie all the pieces together into one specific feel for the small space. Xo

One of my beloved bedside wicker sconces broke. Which prompted a switch to the swing arm glass and brass ones. Which begged for different art above. Something more minimal and tonal. I spent the weekend whipping up this extra large canvas as a color study of my favorite hue - olive. I’m quite pleased with the current arrangement. Dreamy for sure.

My north facing kitchen has stunning soaring beamed ceiling but not a ton of natural light. To remedy the problem I gave my cabinets a facelift with new grooved painted fronts. While I was at it, I refreshed the space with natural marble counters, a new farmhouse sink, matte white faucet, and slatted wood side panels. In an ideal world I would have integrated refrigerator and dishwasher panels but something’s gotta give so I reused all the appliances (along with the existing cabinet boxes). Smaller budget friendly changes require thorough planning through the details and brain damage coordinating the vendors but it’s so worth it. I’m smitten.

I recently visited @kohler_culvercity to see the new @kohler x @studiomcgee collection in person. I loved how they created a characteristically high end feeling bathroom and kitchen experience with the finishes and details presented while keeping budgets in mind. That’s quite a delicate dance. Prefab vanity cabinets like Malin and Seagrove boasted bells and whistles I use when I design custom cabinetry. The Castia bathroom and accessory collection is beautifully crafted with precision knurled detailing. Selecting from a range of finishes for the fixtures and colors for the vanities allows you to personalize the look to your liking. They really thought of everything including lighting and hardware to give you the look of a bathroom designed by Studio McGee without having to hire a designer. A good before and after goes a long way but I love getting to see the progress and all the in between bits of how it comes together. This fabulous front entry was all about upgrading the forms and materials. Using the new @zia_tile Cotto glazed tile made sense to bring in a Mediterranean influence. The restrained hues of the @zia_tile Cotto glazes are beautiful. When I couldn’t decide between them, I found a way to use four of the colors in a sweet alternating checkered pattern. Modern and Med at the same time.

This year I attempted to cook a whole turkey for the first time. I also waited until the last minute for florals and ended up foraging my entire tablescape. And they both turned out great in my opinion. A reminder not to sweat the small stuff and enjoy the moment. I’m grateful for my wonderful little family and supportive friends, and constantly for this community. We build each other up. Onto the main events this holiday season. We got this.
