6 TIPS FOR SURVIVING THE 4TH WITH AN ANXIOUS DOG 👇 (also tips for thunderstorms ⛈️)
1. Plan ahead
If your dog struggles with noise sensitivity, work with your vet or trainer to develop a plan. Budget enough time to get prescriptions (if needed) and have them filled! 💊
2. Safety first
Make sure your microchip is in working order, your dog’s tags are updated, and your yard is secure. If you don’t have a fence, always take your dog out on a leash! And if someone else is watching your pet, make sure they have an emergency contact and the number for your local 24-hour vet.
Give your dog a safe, comfortable place to go - especially if you’re spending the 4th away from home. This can be a crate, a quiet room, etc.
3. Get out early
Exercise your pup early in the day so they’re tired that evening. Plan a bathroom trip before dusk in case they want to stay inside once the booms begin. 🎆
4. Turn up the noise
Get creative with ways to drown out the fireworks. Shut windows & doors to minimize the noise (and, the chance for escape 😆). Try to drown out the booms with air purifiers, fans, white noise machines, TV, and/or a radio.
6. Stay busy
Give your pup something to do! A long-lasting chew, frozen treat, food puzzle, or interactive toy can provide a welcome distraction. And don’t be afraid to comfort your dog. 🫶 There is no evidence to suggest you can reinforce fear in your pet because fear is an emotion, not a behavior. So feel free to cozy up all night!
6. Go easy on yourself
No matter what the internet says, YOU are not the reason your dog is afraid. Fear of fireworks and thunder is VERY common in dogs and is due to genetics, upbringing, and so much more.
Have a plan to keep yourself calm and comfortable, too. 💖
