Jackie started his career as part of Studio One's in house recording band and later went on to work with artists such as Bob Marley, UB40, Barry White, Peter Tosh and Oscar Peterson.
This album was the result of a rare occasion of being on tour in Africa and establishing musical connections with musicians from Ghana, recorded in Accra and mixed in London. Predominantly instrumental, this album is essential to any dub conscientious record collection, as it culminates the career of a Reggae legend whilst under new influences in West Africa resulting in an unmistakably characteristic modern dub sound.

This album features many of the classic Studio One artists – Willie Williams, Tommy McCook, Cedric Brooks, The Gladiators, Vin Gordon – as well as many less well known artists – all who produced classic roots music under the guidance of producer Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd and recorded at the legendary Studio One Records.
Robert "Higherman" Heilman caught up with Vernon Maytone to find out that this legend - after being over fifty years in reggae business - is still on Jah mission.

JAH THOMAS - DANCE HALL CONNECTION LP
Deejay Jah Thomas was one of the creative figures making a dramatic impact on the Kingston sound system scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the rhythms he laid at Channel One studio with the Roots Radics helping to steer reggae towards the emerging dancehall style.
Voicing and mixing his work at King Tubby's studio, typically with the young upstart engineer known as Scientist, Thomas got his start as a quick-witted deejay in the vibrant sound system scene of western Kingston, making his recording debut in 1976 with 'Midnight Rock,' a hit that became the name of his record label, once he shifted to producing his own work.

Hey ho all. Normally at this juncture in the weekend we bring you the week’s new releases on www.buttondownradio.com . Being this close to the C word (not that one!) many of this week’s tunes are too festive yet! So… we have had a look back and started to consider our favourite albums of the year ahead of our annual poll which will release December 10th. We consider the first of our shortlist of 36 (quite likely to be 37 with the release of the new Clockmakers album on Tuesday!) So here are 16 of the best full length studio releases from the first part of the year along with what we wrote about them at release. What else would you add?
A Contratiempo Ska-Jazz S/T from January 8th
a beautiful album of jazz informed ska from A Contratiempo Ska-Jazz. 11 sublime tracks coming to you in the next couple of weeks in the form of their self titled album. I’m trying to make up my mind as to whether this is a ska band influenced by jazz or a jazz album influenced by ska… either way you slice it, this is an accomplished album and sounds super sweet.
Max & The Invaders – Runnin On Fumes from Jan 29th
Max & the Invaders. This Milwaukee Wisconsin outfit have been producing high energy ska for 30 years and flying the 3rd wave flag high and vibrant. Their new album Runnin On Fumes is out now. 14 tracks long and produced by Rob ‘Bucket’ Hingley of the Toasters. A great endorsement.
Russkaja – Turbo Polka Party – released February 3rd
Released on the same day that the band broke up because they no longer wanted to use their "satirical use of Soviet symbols and language" due to public criticism tied to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian Turbo Polka Metal – I absolutely love this OTT skametal album.
The Skapones – Northern Gods from Feb 5th
The second album by Darlington’s The Skapones is off to the presses and we have been listening all week. Northern Gods shows a huge shift for the lads. 2018s Cradle To Grave was upbeat and nostalgic, always politically aware, but Northern Gods shows a development in sound and a brooding, rumbling monster it is. Still maintaining the ska roots, but the sound is so much bigger. The average pace may have dropped but the intensity increases. Big Boss Sound – Return of the Loafer - from February 12th
Ex-Loafers drummer Nasser Bouzida aka Big Boss Man under the guise ‘Big Boss Sound; has released our favourite album of February ‘Return Of The Loafer’. 12 tracks of unbridled Hammond driven boss sounds. So damned good – out now on Liquidator Music
Some Ska Band – Every Now and Then… released March 1st
Superb 3rd release from this New York crew. From upbeat 2 Tone skankers to almost Northern Soul driven stompers, this one has kept reappearing in the car all year long. They just get better and better.
Eastern Standard Time – Clockwork - from March 23rd
Super smooth jazz fuelled ska from Eastern Standard Time with their new album Clockwork which releases in June on Jump Up records. I have lived with the album for a few days and it’s a blast of joy with feel good vibes throughout. Album will be released early June.
Faintest Idea – Road to Perdition - released March 31st
Reviewed by LukeSpurs (Bandcamp) From the powder keg opening to the mini epic closing this is one fine angry ska punk album. "Not Coming Back" may be the most triumphant defeatist song of all time. It's loud, it's brutal, it's a good reflection of modern skapunk - full of energy, politically aware and damned fun!
The Selecter – Human Algebra – released April 21st
The album is a word from the wise - from questioning 'fake news' ('Big Little Lies'), to pointing the finger at keyboard warriors ('Armchair Guevara'), and the scourge of knife crime ('Human Algebra'). Human relationships are also touched upon ('Boxing Clever'), along with a touching tribute to the late great Ranking Roger from The Beat ('Parade The Crown').
Boss Capone & Patsy – Kings and Queens from April 30th
Next up is the brand new album by Boss Capone & Patsy - Kings and Queens. Boss Capone is the lead singer of The Upsessions and the album also has Tommy Tornado playing on it. We have already brought you Everybody Carnival, Oh Boy and This Feeling of Love. We bring you the title track which only leaves a handful you’ve not heard. Sublime Upsessions fuelled stuff and BC / Patsy complement each other beautifully. Outstanding rocksteady. Fat Timmy – Lab Leak – released May 3rd
10 tracks of first class skapunk from outta Florida. We enjoyed their first outing ‘Full Blown Ska’ and Lab Leak builds on their solid foundation.
The Prizefighters - Punch Up - from June 11th
Next, we have a contender for album of the year - The Prizefighters released Punch Up yesterday and it is awesome. They have teased us already with three singles which are all sublime modern rocksteady and the rest of the album does not disappoint. We have chosen a track which would not be out of place on a Chris Murray or Aggrolites set list. The album has been on heavy rotation in the car this week on repeat. The phrase ‘All killer – no filler’ is often overused but entirely appropriate in this case.
The Coolmoods – Here Come The Coolmoods - from August 20th
The Coolmoods are a Buenos Aires based early reggae and rocksteady band. They have released yet another super dope EP - Here Come The Coolmoods! 5 tracks of live studio version of early reggae, skinhead reggae and ska classic tracks. All recorded in one take giving them an incredibly authentic sound. Wouldn’t be surprised if this was recorded in analogue. Such a great sound.
MACSAT - Turn It Up - from Sept 10th
From Germany, MACSAT come with a brand new album ‘Turn It Up’. Reggae to the fore, this is a big sound. Easy skanking beats and the album runs at a heavyweight 18 tracks! They have a big sound for a 5 piece. Organ driven with big, bassy brass some great tracks here and a helping hand from Vic Ruggiero to boot!
The Skatuesques - Hang In There - also from September 10th
We didn’t even know if we get the next CD but… The Skatuesques have finally released their long awaited debut ‘Hang In There’. 10 tracks of soulfully sung, 2 Tone infused ska party rhythms. Some very ska explosion tracks and some very moving slower paced tracks – an impressive release.
Mustard Plug - Where Did All My Friends Go? - also from September 10th
What’s this? Mustard Plug are back? And on the fantastic Bad Time Records? Hells yes! Where Did All My Friends Go? Is the first full length studio release since 2014’s Can’t Contain It and we are on full stoke mode for this. First track ‘Fall Apart’ releases now and the full album is out September 8th.

Sticking with the skapunk for a bit, Mustard Plug’s latest album finally had its full release last week. Their 6th album comes after a 10 year hiatus - Where Did All My Friends Go? Is 13 tracks of a little more ska heavy stuff than we are used to from the Michigan based crew and it’s a welcome return.
The Altones - Vol 1 - again from September 10th!
Firstly a new to us band from Kent - The Altones, featuring members of Intensified they have been peddling their sound for a couple of years now. They play Northern Soul songs stripped back and laid over a reggae beat. No keys or horns give this a truly unique sound. The double bass is the glue that holds the whole shebang together. Superb vocals on every track. Bang on.

THE EXCITERS - TELL HIM LP
The Exciters began as the Masterettes, a girl group formed by high school friends Brenda Reid, Carol Johnson, Lillian Walker, and Sylvia Wilbur. A single was cut for Brooklyns Le Sage label before Wilbur was replaced by Brendas husband, Herb Rooney, and after auditioning for Leiber & Stoller, the Exciters recorded the international smash Tell Him, a song so popular that it spawned foreign language renditions.
This edition of this marvellous debut LP includes the spectacular follow-up hit, Do Wah Diddy, another immortal nugget of irresistible pop soul. Bright, light grooves for your dancing feet! Reissue in clear vinyl.

The Toasters NYC SKA - Men In Underwear LP
In the Spring of 2023 the band was underway on an epic 65 date European tour threading through 16 countries. In the midst of this non-contiguous Frankenstein's monster of a tour we found ourselves with a couple off-days in Germany and went into the studio to track an impromptu one-take “live” album with the masterful Tom Spotter at the controls.
We had wanted to take this opportunity to record something with the current hard hitting European team of myself, Boris Maninveldt on Drums, Tim Duwel on T-Bone, D.J Heinstra on Sax and Adrien de Mieux on Bass. This is the crew that has largely been the touring unit for the last 6 years and more in Europe and so it was a great opportunity to record these tunes as they sound now as of course everything changes organically over time.
Available on black vinyl, limited stock on yellow/red splatter vinyl available.

Rudy is a legendary Italian underground artist, singer and founder of the iconic Punk /Oi Rock’n’Roll ‘Ghetto 84’ band, formed in 1984.
