In honor of National Tulip Day, the city of Amsterdam organizes an annual event on the third Saturday of January where 200,000 tulips fill Museumplein (previously held in Dam Square), free for locals to collect and celebrate the upcoming tulip season.

For the 11th edition, the theme was “Typical Dutch”. Dutch speed skating champion Irene Schouten was the guest of honor, and volunteers wore costumes reflecting Johannes Vermeer’s paintings such as the Girl with the Pearl Earring. The event began after a dynamic fire show at 1pm.

Everyone still remembers Paris Fashion Week events not because of the show itself, but because of the models and their struggle to catwalk in uncomfortable shoes. The act of removing their shoes during the runway was viewed as "empowering" but it was actually a necessary decision for their safety.

Our History

We are an independent student-run newspaper that covers stories from the city of Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam. We publish twice a day during the academic year from Monday to Friday. Once a month, we held workshops open to any student in which we teach specific skills from the journalism field.

The Amsterdammer was founded in March 2018 by UvA communication science student Isabel Bonnet.

We are proud to be diverse and encourage students to discover and develop new ways of communicating the news. Today, our staff consists of 31 students from 21 nationalities and over 10 majors.
