On Thursday April 27th the Steam Ticket staff and friends gathered to celebrate the release of the Steam Ticket Journal Volume 26. We enjoyed refreshments, laughs, and fellowship.

This Thursday, we launch Vol. 26! If you're in the La Crosse, WI vicinity (or if you'd like to fly in for the event), come to the UW Campus Student Union, room 0126 (The Theatre!), 2:15 p.m., for fun and food, readings, stories about stories, and to celebrate the wonderfully hard-working Steam Ticket team!

For those in or around the Driftless region, next weekend in Viroqua, WI, check out the Ridges and Rivers Book Festival.

Make sure to schedule plenty of time to enjoy the Book Fair during the Ridges & Rivers Book Festival in Viroqua. The Book Fair will be held from 9:00-4:30 on Saturday, April 29. Come wander the tables and meet authors at Western Technical College, and then head across Rock Avenue to the upper level of the Eagles Club for even more regional authors. In addition to our favorite small presses and authors, Dragonfly Books (Decorah’s local independent bookstore) will be selling books by the festival’s featured authors in the McIntosh Memorial Library lobby throughout the entire festival.

The Ridges & Rivers Book Festival will be held in Viroqua April 28-30, 2023. We encourage you to register for the festival and view the entire calendar of events by visiting www.ridgesandriversbookfestival.org

Devany (me) is the PR, social media, and outreach guru for the Steam Ticket this semester. I am a double major in communication studies and English, and I have a digital media studies minor. I like creating social media content, pretending I’m as important as Jon, eavesdropping on the readers while I wait for Joe to say something, and doing whatever else Dr. Cashion asks me to.

Avery is a prose reader for our team. She is a junior majoring in English and minoring in creative writing. Avery likes prose that is relatable and evokes emotion. She says, “no matter what the big picture/theme is, there is always something that can draw you in… even the smallest detail.”

Thai is a prose reader for Steam Ticket this semester. Thai is a sophomore majoring in writing. “I like prose that is well rounded and immersive. I like things to flow well, I don’t like stories that are too hoppy, if you pursue a unique style; you better have a very coherent means of conveying to me,” Thai says.

Amanda is a prose reader for our team. She is a fifth year senior majoring in computer science and minoring in creative writing. Amanda likes that leaves her thinking afterwards. She likes something that inspires her emotionally or has a compelling message that sparks considerations “beyond the confines of the story.”

Tana is a prose reader for Steam Ticket this semester. She is a sophomore majoring in English and minoring in photography. They like prose that engages them. “I want to get sucked into what I’m reading so much so that I barely register my surroundings,” Tana said.

Ryan is a poetry reader for our team. He is a senior majoring in communication studies and minoring in English. Ryan likes how poetry can open up a space where readers and writers can relate. He admires that every piece has its own identity “like its own fingerprints” that make it a unique extension of the author. “Poetry is an amazing outlet for the creative energy that we all experience in our daily lives,” says Ryan.

Sage likes poetry that leaves them “with more than they started with” whether that’s an emotion or a story. “Writing that leaves an impact” is her favorite of all, she says.

When reading prose, Jon likes something that is quickly engaging and appreciates a piece that can hold his attention. “If it makes sense and it makes me think, it gets bonus points,” says our editor.
