"People were asked, on July 4th, to sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence. And people were scared to do it! 111 out of 112 refused to sign—these are people from all walks of life—because they looked at the ideas as subversive. We're talking about our Declaration of Independence. Our Bill of Rights. They were scared to say that free speech is inviolate." —John Kirby

Four tried, imperfectly perhaps, to bring together Americans from different backgrounds. The new documentary series looks into what went down.

TODY WE MOURN THE DEATH OF WILLIAM PEPPER who worked tirelessly to bring out the truth about the assassination of his friend, Dr. Martin Luther King. Bill died just a few days after the 56th anniversary of Dr. King’s murder on April 4th, 1968. A year to the day earlier, Dr. King made a courageous public stand against the Vietnam War. King made his decision to go public against the war in part because of Bill’s haunting photo essay in Rampart’s Magazine, The Children of Vietnam, which showed the horrifying effects of the American bombing campaign.

May you rest in the peace that you and Dr. King gave your lives to.

Previously unreleased footage unveils an extraordinary reunion involving seven doctors who were present in the Parkland Hospital Emergency Room where President John F. Kennedy was rushed after being shot on November 22, 1963.

Their testimonies divulge unsettling medical details surrounding the assassination, raising doubt about government investigations that found Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

SUPPORT THE JUSTICE FOR KENNEDY ACT

The Justice for Kennedy Act (H.R. 637) was introduced in the House on January 30 by Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ1). It would not only require six government departments to publicly release any remaining unreleased JFK assassination records in unredacted form within 30 days of its enactment but also eliminate the prohibitions on releasing Lee Oswald’s tax records and records subject to deeds of gift.

The bill has been referred to the following House Committees: Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, Oversight and Accountability, Judiciary, Ways and Means and the Permanent Select Intelligence. However, it has yet to attract any co-sponsors. Without additional sponsors, it will not move forward to the hearing phase.

We ask you to contact your representative before the House takes its summer recess and ask them to consider becoming a co-sponsor.

The bill summary and details may be accessed at: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/118/hr637/summary

This bill is not about who killed the president but simply about complying with the law and government transparency.

The purpose of the bill is to simply finish the job that Congress demanded 30 years ago when it said the prior 30 years had been enough time!

On this day in 1965, fifty-eight years ago, Malcolm X was savagely cut down in a hail of gunfire in the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem. His assassination was witnessed by his wife Betty, his six daughters and hundreds of onlookers.

By April 1964, Malcolm had been exiled from the Nation of Islam, the organization he had grown into prominence. But his banishment was a blessing in disguise. He was now free to speak and act in ways that he never could before. He began a journey that would see him become an international figure and a major threat to the power structure in the United States.

In his famous 1964 speech, "The Ballot or the Bullet", Malcolm dispenses wisdom that applies as much to today as yesterday, as Americans of all backgrounds face unrestricted globalization and a permeable national border:
..[I]t's time now for our people to become conscious of the importance of controlling the economy of our community. If we own the stores, if we operate the businesses, if we try and establish some industry in our own community, then we're developing to the position where we are creating employment for our own kind. Once you gain control of the economy of your own community, then you don't have to picket and boycott and beg some cracker downtown for a job in his business."

Substitute the word "cracker" for "state/corporate elites" (who, to be fair, is likely also a cracker), and you've got as good a blueprint for self-determination and personal reliance as anyone ever laid out.

Today we mourn Malcolm X's murder, but we recall his spirit and brilliance, and we call upon his courage to enact the "world-wide revolution" we so desperately need.

(the following images are screen grabs from the speech)

High-Flying Byrd… David Crosby has winged to a higher place. A true original of the 1960s and beyond, Crosby enchanted us with his music – and often unsettled us with his words. He liked to provoke people, raise them from their comfortable slumber. The Byrds fired him for being so “outspoken” – that was the word used in the New York Times obit. According to the San Francisco Chronicle obit, Crosby – who died at his horse ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley (California) on Wednesday surrounded by his family – former friends like even the forgiving Graham Nash were no longer speaking with him. “They actively hated him,” according to the Chronicle obit.

Crosby himself admitted that he was often hard to take. But sometimes it’s the obnoxious ones who speak the truth. Crosby was one of the ‘60s rock legends who dared to know. He encouraged band mate Neil Young to write the searing song “Ohio” after National Guard soldiers fired into a crowd of Kent State students protesting the Vietnam War. After Senator Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down, killing the dreams of all those who yearned for a more just and peaceful country, Crosby wrote “Long Time Gone” for his “super group” Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young).

Onstage at the now-iconic Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, Crosby took over the Byrds’ between-song patter. Introducing the song about JFK “He Was a Friend of Mine” by band mate Roger McGuinn, Crosby stunned the audience. Even though the song seemed to pin the Kennedy assassination on Lee Harvey Oswald (“from a sixth-floor window a gunman shot him down”), Crosby made the following statement:

“When President Kennedy was killed, he was not killed by one man. He was shot from a number of different directions by different guns. The story has been suppressed, witnesses have been killed. And this is your country, ladies and gentlemen.”

After the song, referring to his courageous statement, Crosby commented, “As I said, they will censor it, I’m sure. They can’t afford to have things like that on the air. It’d blow their image.”

David Crosby was known for his angelic harmonies. And for his prodigious drug-taking, which the obits lingered on. But I’ll also remember him for his political boldness.

Looking back on the 1960s and '70s years later, Crosby told the Chronicle, "I don't think it was for nothing. We did manage to stop the Vietnam War, and we did some good work for civil rights. Music is a great tool for propagating ideas. Ideas are the most powerful thing on the planet. Underline that."

That devil-may-care attitude of Crosby and other counter-cultural leaders, that willingness – that DRIVE – to speak the unspeakable is what shimmers from that time. It still lights our way forward.

REMEMBERING PAUL SCHRADE

Today we mourn the passing of Paul Schrade, labor leader and tireless campaigner for the truth in the assassination of his dear friend Senator Robert Francis Kennedy. On the night of the Senator's victory in the California presidential primary, Kennedy was brutally murdered by four bullets fired from behind at point blank range.

Paul was also shot that night, receiving a glancing blow to his forehead, and it was in the very nature of his injury that Paul found the thread that led him to the heart of a nagging truth: convicted assassin Sirhan Sirhan could not have shot him from the front while simultaneously shooting Kennedy from behind. The nature and direction of the two men's wounds, along with the fact that Sirhan was almost immediately captured by Kennedy friends that included famed defensive tackle Rosey Grier, proved to Paul beyond the shadow of a doubt that a second gunman killed his friend.

Paul did not speculate on the possibility of a conspiracy in Senator Kennedy's death. He merely stated what he knew to be true: everything from the trajectories to the eyewitnesses to the number of bullets fired proclaimed the innocence of Sirhan, whose bullets wounded Paul and four others, but who simply could not have killed the Senator. Though Paul was a victim of Sirhan's gun, he was his staunchest defender, and an inexhaustible advocate for his parole.

Here is a clip of Paul from the upcoming documentary series, Four Died Trying.

Rest in peace, Paul Schrade
