Disney reopened their parks in July 2020, after a four-month shutdown from the first COVID-19 wave.

Honestly, that 2-month shutdown was devastating for Disney — how could it not be?? But the parks and the company at large are working hard to recover and that’s what we’re talking about on this week’s episode of Pixie Dust & Profits.

Instead of revisiting an old episode about the initial shutdown (it is a little triggering, we’ll be honest), we’re looking at what Disney’s operations look like two years AFTER the shutdown ended. We also cover some best practices to help you transition into whatever new role your business may be taking on.

Disney built a brand-new Galactic Starcruiser “immersive experience hotel,” which simulates a 2-day trip into outer space. Awesome, right?? But also… $$$$$.

We haven’t booked our trip quite yet because it’s just too expensive for our tastes– but Disney definitely knows how to get people excited and hype up their newest creations to the people who are more than willing to shell out all that cash.

And honestly? We can take a lot away from how Disney does this.

For one, they know how to play the hype game. They get people excited and even incite a little FOMO before they announce their offers. And then, they announce the offers to specific people — not just to the wider public.

This helps make people feel like they got a special invite (and like they’re already a VIP).

Increased prices with fewer perks? Count us out! ✌

We were bummed out when Disney revealed their revamped annual pass holder program last August.

Historically, the program SAVED you significant money if you were going to Disney more than once a year and it came with some pretty incredible perks and discounts during your visits.

We are begrudgingly renewing our annual passes this go-round… because it feels like they are “nickel and diming” those of us who are park regulars!

A celebration to remember 🎉

From new rides and limited-edition merchandise to a new once-in-a-lifetime fireworks show, the FOMO was real for Disney World’s 50th Anniversary! They really are marketing geniuses — we can’t help but drool over their tactics!

The hype Disney created building up to the start of their 50th Anniversary celebration back in October had all of us eagerly awaiting for it to begin! And they held nothing back.

While Disney really only made some small updates to their brand, their shows, etc. they SEEMED huge to fans! And that’s a lesson we can all apply to our businesses.

Thought exercise 💭: How can you update your offers to reflect a new business milestone or a specific season?

For example, we’ve seen people throw in additional bonuses to their launches during their biz anniversary, or throw in sales email templates for programs opening around Black Friday!

Our jaws dropped 😲 when we saw the price for Disney’s exclusive Galactic Starcruiser experience!

We are still trying to warm up to the idea of saying YES to this high-priced excursion – even though it’s promised to be an out-of-this-world weekend experience.

We have to give Disney props though – they had their Star Wars fans prepped and ready to make the purchase once it officially opened earlier this year.

Summer is here... is your business ready for it?

Our clients often take time off to enjoy summer with their families – especially after the last two years! This gives us the opportunity to prep projects and plans for the end of the year.

The Story Behind Pixie Dust & Profits

We are Yasmine Kashefi Spencer and Nicole Boucher, business owners and life-long Disney lovers. As business strategists and operations managers, we work with 6 & 7-figure entrepreneurs to scale their businesses and strategize how to turn their dreams into reality.

Disney has a long history as a special place in both our hearts for a few reasons—and you’ll hear a few of them in this episode (you may even be surprised by our answers!)

Despite being “from the North”, we’ve managed to visit Walt Disney World a dozen times in the last 5 years alone. Our most recent trips? A Disney-style bachelorette for Yasmine and a #StarWarsRivalRun 10k for Nicole!

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET, ANYWAY?

Our story starts in a hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. (Not what you were expecting, right?) We were both flying to a conference and decided to bunk together for the night to save on expenses for the long trip.

We were both a little nervous to bunk with a complete stranger, but a Facebook photo in front of the Magic Kingdom and a Disney Dooney & Bourke wallet wiped away any awkwardness instantly. We were obviously both Disney crazed, so we were cool in each other’s books.

Then the night turned from, “ok, this may not be that awkward” to staying up until 1am chatting all things operations, business, life, and of course Disney.

We didn’t know many people in the creative field who get stoked talking about business or operations. We felt like Stitch from Lilo and Stitch—a little different, kind of funny, but enthusiastic about sharing our interests. With our similar MBAs and corporate backgrounds (and love of Disney, obvs) we were a match made in Magic Kingdom heaven.

SO, WHY THE PODCAST?

We wanted to share our back-office managerial strategies with you, but we didn’t want it to be stodgy or corporate-y… because that just isn’t our jam.

So when we started geeking out over the logistical marvel that is the Disney transportation system or how the mosquito population is controlled in swampy Orlando, Florida… we realized we were onto something.

Could we combine our love of Disney AND strategic business management?!

Yes, yes we could.

A stroke of inspiration at the airport on our way home from Nashville, and we had a plan—Pixie Dust & Profits was officially born though it wouldn’t launch for nearly a year later.

Each episode will center around a Disney story from our personal experience. We will explore the topic from a business standpoint, talk about the history behind it, and also share some our favorite products.

But we are most excited to take all of this information and show you how it can apply to YOUR business. Whether you are a solopreneur, small business, or something in between, Walt Disney has left us all with waaaay more than epic movies and memorable vacations. He left us with a business blueprint.
