This week's episode, a love fest full of reminiscing, brings 5 incredible years of and as a duo (with as producer) to a close! Nehal will be pursuing her dream of an entertainment content-creation career, and Annika will be taking That Desi Spark forward, continuing its efforts to create conversations, and share community stories and issues from across the diaspora.

Thank you so much for supporting us, sponsoring us, building this with us, listening each week, sending us DMs, sharing your stories, showing up to our events, suggesting topics, getting involved, inspiring us to keep going, creating connections, and sparking change in your communities as we try to do the same. We feel so lucky to have had you listen to our show. And thank you to the extraordinary, talented, open, and knowledgeable expert guests who have shared their stories and insights with all of us who learned from them.

We look forward to your continued support for both of us - and can't wait to announce all of the exciting ventures ahead for Nehal, Annika, and for TDS! ✨ Until next time...keep lighting That Desi Spark.

You've probably noticed a number of these posts from your feed and as the campaign closes, we wanted to tell you about it - we've been at work with and to support the South Asian Heart Health Awareness and Research Act and get it passed by Congress so we can .

Introduced by , the act provides funding for further research. Thinking it's just diet or genetics? Nope. As Dr. Alka Kanaya, pioneer behind the MASALA study told us on our webinar with Rep. Jayapal, South Asians are the only demographic whose heart-related deaths are increasing...and the variety of factors haven't actually been figured out!

The bill is close to passing so contact your reps today and let's close the gap on heart healthiness in our community.

*We recognize that the conflict in Israel/Palestine is (rightfully) at top of mind for most of us. Please continue to look at our stories for ways to help the ongoing crisis.*

JOIN US on October 4th as we host a webinar with (D-WA 7th District) and Dr. Alka Kanaya (, MASALA Study) about a heart health bill authorizing the Department of Health and Human Services to establish programs that support heart-disease research and awareness among communities disproportionately affected by heart disease, (including the South Asian population of the United States!).

Did you know South Asians make up 25% of the world’s population and 50% of the world’s cardiac disease burden? We can together!

Within a week of recording with author, activist, and actress talking about anti-AAPI narratives and book bans, Simon and Schuster, the world’s largest publisher took a huge step in taking a Florida school district to court for banning books. As we mentioned on the episode, literature across America, primarily written by people of color or members of marginalized communities, has been banned from schools on the basis of “parental rights” and “protecting our kids.” Books save lives, and removing them only isolates children who need to see themselves in the world.

New mom and new book! She’s making all the moves! ’s newest romcom novel, Sugar, Spice, and Can’t Play Nice comes out TOMORROW! ✨

Called “A strikingly vibrant love story for modern dreamers and hopeless romantics,” by publishing journals, Sugar, Spice follows Payal and Ayaan - a designer and a marketing whiz whose families in London have decided they should get married as part of a merger. Just one problem: they had a one night stand last week and hate each other. But both have reasons to say yes including funding for Payal’s line and a cushy role at Ayaan’s family’s company. No one has to know. Add in one meddling grandmother, three best friends from the CMC, and a whole lot of family drama, and you have a summer read with Dil Dhadakne Do vibes and a trip between London and New York.

It’s available in print and e-book at bookstores and online! Link in bio!

TOMORROW, February 8, at 7 PM EST, we’re hosting a workshop conducted by the incredible Dr. Anjali Ferguson, a therapist highly trained in trauma-informed care. She’ll be running an interactive, engaging session on what trauma is (not just what social media says it is), how it presents in the South Asian community (where mental health conversations still lag), how to cope and support others, and will provide attendees with materials to refer back to.

The Woke Desi

Our story begins with a Facebook post. When Annika Sharma, an author and health communications manager, was told she should start a podcast, she’d laughed the idea off. But it stuck with her, and on a whim, she posted to a South Asian women’s group on Facebook. Sixty-five people expressed interest. After whittling down the applications to five, then eventually two, Nehal Tenany--a blogger and digital marketing specialist from San Francisco--and Resham Dhaduk, a health and wellness entrepreneur, completed a trio of powerful women who would go on to become co-hosts of The Woke Desi, a podcast geared toward South Asian women (and men!) and the unique issues that they face in a multicultural world.

Part S*x and the City, a little Feminist Fight Club, and a sprinkle of a talk show, The Woke Desi takes on both light and heavy South Asian-American topics with ease. Episodes are released every Tuesday at midnight, on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher and more. A full list can be found at www.anchor.fm/thewokedesi.

Follow Annika (@annikasharma) and Nehal (@nehaltenany), as they begin Season 2, on Instagram, and follow The Woke Desi @thewokedesi on Instagram and Twitter!
