So many have been wondering where the heck did go? Just like many others, have taken time to deal with my demons along with ending a 6-year project and getting sucked into what appeared to be a great project. After the 6-year project, I couldn’t define my purpose anymore. Really. So much goes into some projects that you are left losing yourself because you are birthing something and when it finally comes out, you discover that you are not the one to take it from there to the delusional thoughts of greatness you thought would follow. As for that “great” project. I guessed that while great, if that project required more that what was agreed to, and then you become clear that the project leader doesn’t really appreciate what you have to deal with in life, that then maybe it’s not such a great project after all.

I have always believed that if you have the resources to compensate your team, that you should make sure you are empowering their lives as part of the collaboration. If you are the leader, that you allow people to do their jobs/roles that make you successful. That you create a space where everyone is enrolled in your vision and they take ownership of their role in making your vision come true… and flourish for everyone’s benefit.

So I am still here. Gestating the next chapter as there are only 1,400 weeks left to get this life right where I have always wanted it to be. Who know? Maybe soon there will be big news on that chapter for sharing. But for now, I miss the creator part that was thinking of ways to reach out and touch you with a thoughtful message and some expression of art that represented what I was thinking. Soon!

It has long been a tradition for our family to create our family alter or ofrenda in celebration of the passing of our loved ones. Our ancestors, the Aztecs, long celebrated the day of the dead way before the Spaniards and the Catholic Church arrived in the West.

Tok Thompson is a professor of anthropology at USC whose work has focused on folklore, mythology and Indigenous groups. “We don’t have a good relationship with death in the United States,” Thompson said. “And that’s not true everywhere. You can have a real distinction between bad deaths, when people die young, and good deaths, where you die at 95 surrounded by your family. … We don’t have that concept of the ‘good death’ in modern American culture.”

In the ofrenda, we honor our loved ones together with life’s elements: water, wind, fire and earth:

Water quenches the spirits’ thirst after their journey, It could be in the form of their favorite beer, soft drink or just plain water.

Wind is represented by “papel picado”, a colorful cutout paper banner that moves in the breeze.

Candles represent fire and also illuminate the path that guides the souls to the altar.

Earth is represented by fruits, dirt and flowers. Cempazúchitl, a word from our native Náhuatl, represents the flower of the dead – the marigold. Marigolds are known for their medicinal properties and are also used to decorate graves.

Pan de los Mu***os or bread for the dead is for the spirits to partake of on the visit to our dimension.

As the native culture adapted to Christianity, symbols such as saints, crucifixes and holy water were incorporated into the alter of offerings as were sugar skulls.

Memorial items are included also such as their favorite snack, beer, salsa or any other remembrance like lotto tickets, pro sports cards or even car keys.

So while we go out for Halloween in the US, some of us will celebrate among the dead who contributed to our lives and live in our hearts forever. Feliz Día de los Mu***os!
