Presidents Kiir, Ruto preside over inauguration of South Sudan mediation in Nairobi

Nairobi, Thursday (May 9, 2024) - In a momentous occasion marked by unity and hope, President Salva Kiir and President William Ruto of Kenya on Thursday graced the official launch of the South Sudan mediation process aimed at bringing peace between the Government and the Hold-out groups.

During the event, President Kiir conveyed his appreciation to Pope Francis and Sant'Egidio Community for their steadfast backing of the Rome Peace Process, emphasizing the robust groundwork upon which it was built.

President Kiir reiterated South Sudan's commitment to negotiating with an open mind and a sincere desire for durable peace in the country.

In response, President Ruto expressed his appreciation to President Kiir for entrusting him with the leadership of the final phase of the South Sudan mediation process.

Ruto additionally lauded President Kiir for his profound modesty and unwavering commitment to promoting peace for the South Sudanese people and the region as a whole.

The ceremony signifies the ultimate achievement of ongoing efforts to promote peace by means of constructive discourse and to restore harmony among all parties concerned.

National ministry of health re- announce the outbreak of red eye 🔴 disease in the country.

Juba , Monday 22 April 2024 , The Ministry of Health has announced the outbreak of red eye disease known as conjunctivitis in the country.

In a joint press statement issued today, the ministry of health has indicated that as of the 16th of April 2024, a total of about 382 suspected cases were screened and managed in the border town of Nimule.

The Minister of Health, Yolanda Awel Deng also confirmed reported cases of the disease outbreak in Juba.

The ministry also has assure and has urged the public to Wash hands after greetings different people either in the public institutions or private sectors.

In news the Western Equatoria Youth Union has made a decision to dissolve youth associations, in the ten counties. Has asked the County Commissioners to put forth new candidates. The chairperson of the union Silvester Raphael Ruati stated that the existing youth associations have not been actively involved in activities or development plans for the youth in those areas.

According to a letter dated April 2024 with reference number 001/2024 County Commissioners are directed to propose least two individuals for each position of chairperson, secretary and treasurer after consulting with youth and community leaders. This move is intended to ensure that the formed youth associations can better represent and cater to the needs of young people.

"I, Silvester Raphael Ruati issue this order under Youth Union No. 001/2024 for dissolving Youth Associations across all ten counties. I urge County Commissioners to nominate two candidates per role. Chairperson, secretary and treasurer. With their contact details " reads the letter. "These nominations should be done in collaboration, with youth and community leaders by April 2024 while ensuring gender equality considerations."

The government has announced a plan to upgrade the capacity of the Bentiu Refinery to 10 000 barrels per day within the next six months.
Last year, government revealed that Bentiu refinery which produces roughly 7,000 barrels of oil per day, requires expansion.
Presidential affairs minister Joseph Bangasi Bakasoro on Saturday led a joint team comprising of operating companies and partners to Bentiu to conduct an assessment of the operational efficiency of oil production, the state of Bentiu Refinery, and environmental conditions in the area.
Speaking to the media, Minister Bakasoro revealed that the government has secured funds to start improving the refinery.
“Within six to eight months from today, the refinery will be operational, the road will be constructed, and fuel will be abundant in the market," said Minister Bakasoro, "We also encourage the governor of the state to provide enough security to all the companies and the contractors who are operating the field."
Meanwhile, managing director of the Nile Petroleum Company, Bernard Amuor said upgrading Bentiu refinery is a critical step towards overcoming current economic challenges facing the country.
“I’m bringing this delegation to have a firsthand look into what we have and how do we address the current looming economic challenges in the country and refinery will be one of the solutions have a strong economy," said Amuor. "The crisis in Sudan is also very alarming for us in terms of exports, so we are trying to refocus all our energy and attention to make sure that the refinery is operational.”

A high-level delegation headed by the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says observing the cessation of hostilities agreement is a way to reduce the risk of instability in the country.
Speaking at the end of President Ramaphosa’s visit to Juba yesterday, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor shared that they were encouraged by parties’ adherence to the ceasefire agreement and unification of forces.
“The ceasefire agreement is holding and threats to the country's peace and stability have been reduced," said Minister Pandor. "We believe that the ongoing work in the establishment of the unified security forces for the country, with that the security situation, will further improve. His Excellency is encouraged that the parties remain committed to the revitalized agreement as the most viable vehicle to address the root causes of the conflict and to build sustainable peace in South Sudan”.
Minister Pandor also stressed that South Africa will continue to support the government and the people of South Sudan on their path of achieving lasting peace.

The National Elections Commission says it has dispatched teams to begin assessment of their branches in the states.
NEC Chairperson Professor Abednego Akok Kacuol says the commission is behind schedule to fulfill most of the activities needed ahead of December elections.
Professor Abednego was speaking Thursday during a briefing with the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa about the commission’s preparedness with eight months left for the exercise.
"The elections laws must be read well and it says when it remains six months, the elections dates must be declared," said Professor Kacuol. "The peace agreement says when it remains two months, elections must be conducted hence we are facing these two laws and we are facing time, the time is running and we are exerting our efforts to see to it that we are implementing what is in the law.”
