On The Edge News broke a story a few weeks ago about Edgewood College Prof. Susan Rustick’s remote teaching request, which resulted in the college declaring her teaching contract “null and void.” Rustick is on the autism spectrum and said she is not able to tolerate wearing a mask for any length of time.

Today, the Wisconsin State Journal also reported on the situation. On The Edge received a mention in the WSJ story by higher education reporter Kelly Meyerhofer.

The ceremony was originally scheduled for Sunday, May 16 at the Alliant Energy Center. On March 24, the college Commencement Committee shared the news with students via email that the location for graduation would move to campus. President Andrew Manion explained in the email that the change in venue and date was due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions.

Pat's official title to the OTE staff is "advisor," but from day one, she went above and beyond that call of duty, extending herself to her students as not only a mentor but a trusted confidant, a shoulder to cry and rejoice on, and most of all, a dear friend. To say she is missed would be to greatly understate.

We are currently working on our own piece to honor Pat, and giving everyone the time and space to gather their thoughts on what Pat means to them and be included.

Thank you for your support.

The park, founded in 1905, offers walking paths, ice skating rinks and playgrounds. It has been a popular place for residents during the COVID pandemic. It is a hub for outdoor recreation and borders the Vilas Neighborhood, the Henry Vilas Zoo, Edgewood College, and Lake Wingra. The park sees more than 100,000 visitors per year.

“We wanted to highlight that there are significant decisions being made in these master plans without evidence to back them up,” said Ann Rivlin, who is a Vilas Neighborhood resident.

Edgewood College President Andrew Manion told OTE in an email that the main purpose of testing athletes is to prevent the spread of COVID from one campus to another during competitions. “It is important to recognize that decisions made by Edgewood College regarding testing of student athletes are not made in isolation, but in the context of the NCAA as well as our own athletic conference (NACC)” said Manion, referring to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

These spaces do not magically solve cross-racial issues at a predominantly white school, but they’re a step in the right direction. It could go further than spaces, though. Edgewood can take several steps to help students of color: students feeling supported and validated in the classroom, providing more scholarship opportunities for students of color, and a staff that is more diverse.
