Two members of a family that owns a series of used car lots in Kenosha, Wisconsin, testified that they did not give permission to Kyle Rittenhouse or other members of his cohort to protect their businesses around the time that Rittenhouse shot and killed two people and wounded a third.

People use these words interchangeably, but they aren't entirely the same.

But the defense may call them "arsonists" or "looters," the judge ruled. The criminal trial of Rittenhouse, the teenager who shot and killed two protesters in Kenosha, Wis., begins next week.

I was initially planning on bringing the podcast back this weekend because ~duh~ but it's being A Time. Adulting is a thing and I hate it.

I'm hoping that things will chill out at least by turkey day to start sharing more fun things with y'all.

On this day in 1847, Vinnie Ream Hoxie was born in Madison. She was the first woman sculptor to receive a commission from the federal government.

Ream was 18 years old when her supporters convinced President Lincoln to sit while she sculpted his bust. She later received a commission to sculpt a life size statue of Lincoln, beating out several distinguished male sculptors for this honor.

The life-sized Carrara marble figure of Lincoln stands in the Rotunda of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Her statue, "The West," is in the State Capitol in Madison.

She was also commissioned to model busts of important people such as Senator John Sherman, General Custer, Horace Greeley, Admiral Farragut, Sequoyah and others. During her lifetime she sculpted more than 100 pieces, many of which stand in capitol buildings across the country.

She was also a writer and fighter for women's rights and other political issues. Being active internationally in the arts and politics brought much attention to her, and speculation was rampant about the nature of her friendship with her most powerful advocate, Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman.

After working in Rome for 20 months, she married Lieutenant Richard Leveridge Hoxie at the age of 30, and they had one son. She is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

On this day in 1851, North Hall, the first building on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, was erected.

It opened as a dormitory for men. The cost of construction was $19,000.

Pictured is a view of campus from 1865, at which time the school was made up of three buildings. South Hall is on the left, North hall is on the right, and Bascom Hall (then called University Hall) is in the center.

On this day in 1875, Increase Lapham died of a heart attack while fishing in Oconomowoc.

Lapham served Wisconsin as a geologist, meteorologist, historian, archivist, anthropologist, and scientist. He helped found the State Historical Society and served on its board for 22 years. He helped establish the National Weather Service and worked to preserve Native American burial mounds, as well as the forests and prairies of Wisconsin.

He also helped establish hospitals for the blind, deaf, and mentally ill in Milwaukee and to start two women's colleges, Carroll College and Milwaukee-Downer College.

On this day in 1908, the Man Mound Park in Sauk County was dedicated.

The Mound depicts a gigantic human figure, 204 feet in length, in the act of walking. This kind of mound is unusual in that it differs from the three main kinds of mounds that archaeologists have discovered: conical (used mostly for family burials), platform (usually made for important homes or ceremonies), and effigy (in the form of animals, generally thought to represent clans and lineages.)

Sadly, the legs of the Man Mound were partially destroyed during road construction in the early part of the last century. Man Mound is one of the few surviving effigy mounds in the area. At least 900 mounds existed in Sauk County at one time. Over 75% of those mounds have been plowed, eliminated by floods or destroyed by looters and construction.

Efforts by William H. Canfield and Dr. Increase Lapham led to the preservation and appreciation of many Native American lands, especially effigy mounds such as Man Mound.

From Son of Baldwin -

Ask the Indigenous/Native/First Nations people. Ask Black people. Ask so many and we'll be able to tell you that America is haunted.

And we could tell you why.

"How were the houses a part of the slave system? In every way. They would not stand were it not for the labor and lives of enslaved people. Enslaved people extracted lumber and clay from the land and converted them into building materials. Enslaved people helped import the materials that did not come from the land. Enslaved people cut, laid, erected, and pieced the materials together. Enslaved people built the houses.

Enslaved people made and brought in the items that furnished the houses once construction was done. Enslaved people cleaned and maintained the houses once they were furnished. Enslaved people helped expand and renovate the houses when their owners wanted more. And this is to say nothing of the blood, sweat, tears, families, and lives lost as enslaved people worked to produce the crops that made the owners of the houses rich."
