The film? Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory - a 50 second clip of workers walking out of a factory. not exactly a blockbuster, but it was the birth of cinema as we know it. 🎥

Miranda ( She/Her)

🎥 What are your top 2/3 movies?

“Almost Famous, Pride and Prejudice (2005), and IT (2017). Almost Famous has a soundtrack to die for, Pride and Prejudice is an unbeatable love story, and IT has such a good meld of a somber story with the typical frights from a horror movie.”

🎥 what does cinema/ film mean to you?

“I think film as an art form means an unlimited world of exploration and expression. I enjoy that film holds so many different aspects in the make up of it all, like the scene setting, lighting, sound design, etc. With that many variants, it’s so neat to see how filmmakers can manipulate them to tell their unique stories”

Isabelle (She/Her)

🎥what are your top 2/3 films? Why?

“Everything Everywhere All At Once - pure chaos with a plot insane enough to work
Into The Spider-Verse - top tier animation and visuals
Shaun of the Dead - brilliantly executed comedy while also serving its purpose as a horror movie”

🎥What does film/Cinema mean to you?

“My personal favourite genres would be slice-of-life, for when I’m in more of a casual viewing mood, and comedies. While a lot of comedy tends to get a bad rap, when it’s executed well (as in the examples above) it can lead to an iconic film-going experience.”

Emmet (They/Them)

🎥 What are your top 2/3 movies? why?

“ハウス、Elvira, and Annihilation. I really like the ability of film to act as an uncanny simulation or pastiche of reality. ”

🎥 What does cinema/film mean to you?

“Film as an art form is unique because of its visual relationship with time. The ability to combine many artistic aspects like music theater and visual aesthetics into one gives film a wide potential. ”

Luke (He/Him)

🎥 What are your top 2/3 movies? And why?

“The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers:
The Lord of the Rings franchise has been my absolute favourite of all time since I was about 5 years old. I think Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the books is one of the most successful re-imaginations ever achieved in film. He took an already fantastic story and streamlined it for a film audience to make a highly enjoyable cohesive trilogy that I think will stand the test of time.
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark:
To me, this film set the standard for what an action-packed film should be. It can be cliché at times, but sometimes cliché is what you need. It is a fantastic watch and gives you a sense of enjoyment and excitement when you watch it.
The Matrix:
For me the first installment in the Matrix was something that left a lasting impact. The way it utilises brand new videography techniques and CGI make it distinct and authentic. Also, the performance of the actors and actresses are all outstanding, giving you goosebumps throughout the film. “

🎥 What does film/cinema mean to you?

“I’m not sure what film means to me really. But, I would say it is something that can draw energy and emotion from you. Personally, I generally watch Sci-Fi and Fantasy films. They allow me to explore totally different universes. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy other genres. Finally, I think film is one of the best mediums of modern day storytelling, allowing anyone and everyone to enjoy it.”

Noah (He/Him)

🎥 What are your top 2/3 movies? Why?

“Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex, Oppenheimer, Gladiator (no particular ranking).

I tend to gravitate towards historically-based films because they offer a window into the past and often give us new perspectives on that past. In my view, how we relate to history is perhaps more important than what actually happened in the past, which is why historical storytelling is so crucial.”

🎥 What does film/cinema mean to you?

“Ultimately, I feel that film, like any art form, is about showcasing the totality of the human experience. I believe good cinema captures a wide range of emotions, cultures, perspectives, and histories. In this sense, I feel movies are an amazing exercise in empathy, understanding, and perspective — and just plain interesting and entertaining to boot!”

About Us

The Annual Toyama International Film Festival began eight years ago, simply as a small local event and an excuse to get together. In our first year, the team received only ten short film submissions. Today, TIFF has become a highly-anticipated annual event and a staple of Toyama’s international community. We receive over 800 submissions each year from countries all around the world. We strive to continue to grow, adapt, and improve, and in doing so, our community and international reaches grow stronger with every year.

Submissions for this year will be open until May 17th, 2019.

HISTORY

The Annual Toyama International Film Festival was started by a handful of English teachers in rural Toyama Prefecture, Japan. Ignited by a passion for films and a desire to connect communities, our committee hoped to one day reach a great number of people—and with time, we were able to do just that.
