Practicing physician discussing the apparently deliberate misrepresentation of simple data -- and we're talking simple numbers that can be explained and dealt with pretty simply -- by the head of the CDC and the news media's bigotry in deciding what to report and how to report it. Not at all a good thing. Not at all.
Credibility is a precious thing, when and injured, terribly difficult to heal. The military's credibility took a huge hit during the Vietnam war (by following the guidance of politicians to play the press in order to guide public opinion) that took a generation or more of generally consistent honesty and openness to overcome. Once regained, it has to be maintained, which takes even more effort every time some idiot tries to blow smoke to cover some act of stupidity -- not to be confused with finding out about a mistake, bad luck or brain fart. It takes some courage to be honest, and some intelligence to know how to continue the mission effectively when things don't go right.
The nation's journalistic-political industry is only barely aware of how its credibility has been injured by its in-your-face obvious abuses of trust. There may be plenty of people who are quite content being told stories they're already susceptible to believing, playing to an audience's prejudices can generate easy applause -- but the structure of today's media make those audiences ever smaller, even if more numerous, and you need to be aware of just how many people just don't go to any show at all. They've opted out of everyone's audience because they don't get any satisfaction out of being played, used like tools and played like toy horns.
These problems create a huge opportunity for a new journalism, one that provides consistent coverage on the matters the public needs to know, through reporting that is thorough, accurate, useful and meaningful, by professionals who respect the intelligence and decency of their audiences. Things to look forward to!
