Start this video at about 8:25 where the good retired infantry fist sergeant starts talking about how Russian conducts propaganda operations -- scattering, harvesting and amplification. It's actually the standard of the profession for propagandists, and anyone in the news profession needs to be aware and conscious of these tactics in order not to be used like tools to mislead the public and help these bad actors get their way. That includes domestic political matters, not just foreign dictators, btw...

Very much worth the time -- much of what Mr Moore discusses I have seen in many other credible sources, often places people are told not to look -- like under the Inquisition, or other times when authorities insist common folks not look outside the doctrine they're given, and the common wisdom is to show your virtue by doing what you're told. Completely to the contrary of what the news profession should do, which is why respect for the news services is as low as that for Congress... It seems it must reach the darkest before the dawn, right?

Very good review of the problems with untrustworthy news sources, summarized by the British Medical Journal. The BMJ has earned and maintained an excellent reputation for publishing serious studies on medical matters for a century and a half, but somehow offends the sensibilities of Facebook/Meta "fact checkers." Might be beta bots bought by Mr. Zuckerberg, who knows, but they don't make it any easier to sort through the blizzard of information on seriously important matters out there. Bravo Zulu to Dr. Campbell (Ph.D, Nursing, for those who get testy about titles)!

Chris Cappy, "the average infantryman," provides another example of pretty darn good journalism -- a solid, well-grounded and thorough report that provides context in many respects to give the audience a good understanding of what's going on, where it comes from, the complexities and uncertainties of motivation and intent and in impact and response. I'd suggest that the young Specialist get a direct commission, but lower enlisted usually have too much good sense to accept that kind of thing... Well done!

Pretty darn good investigative reporting -- Cappy lays out not just the current problem but also goes over the history and challenges decision makers had to deal with over the course of that history. Whether you happen to agree with the choices made doesn't matter if you're not aware of the realities and risks that you would have had to deal with if you were them, at that time. Bravo Zulu to the Average Infantryman!

You need to make sure you have a good idea of situation before you write or publish a news story, otherwise the result can easily be propaganda, not news, not even editorial. In this case, chalking up the low water levels of Lake Mead as the product of climate change, the product in turn of burning coal and oil, is simply nonsense if you don't look at where the water is coming from (no real change) and where it's going (huge increase in outflows!!!). In today’s news is yet another article claiming the record-low water levels in Lake Mead (a manmade water reservoir) are due to human-caused climate change. In fact, to make the problem even more sinister, the Mafia is also part of the story:

Some very profound reflection on social discourse -- reflecting perhaps strongly on reporters and journalists as the guides and drivers of public discourse. Among the more serious problems afflicting the profession you have presumption, condemnation, hostility, self-righteousness and bigotry, which in turn leads to incomplete, inaccurate, misleading and false reporting -- providing a miserably poor base for people who like or accept the reporting while driving away anyone who knows better or who is objectified by the reporting.

You call a newspaper a "rag" when it misses important stuff, when it distorts things, when it presumes you should believe something you know you don't believe -- and you know exactly why you don't. Rags may be run by people who are good, who want good things, who think they are helping guide the community towards good, but they're actually making a serious mess of things -- and the Netherlands is suffering from exactly this problem, as discussed in this video.

You can bet major news outlets were very much in favor of the policies the government put into place, and did not address the potential problems -- making them "rags." As a result, policy makers in government didn't take a hard look at the likely consequences of their work, and to the extent they were aware of opposition, they thought it was just a bunch of cranks not thinking clearly who they could ignore. Until it turns out they themselves were the cranks, oblivious of the flaws in their programs and ignoring the problems they were creating. Stupid.

And due in no small part because the news media was not doing their job. Rags. Good for wiping up slop, but not much else. Ugh.

There is clearly a measure of awareness in the media that the public does not trust them -- but they are clearly in denial that anything in their work merits distrust, not even when their serious failures are proved. Fox is hardly the standard of propriety, heaven knows! But you need to keep an eye open to what's important, what's true and what's useful, no matter where you run into it. Not to worry, though, the road is being cleared for a new era in journalism. Can't wait...

A lot of content in this one, my focus is on the Drexel University team's efforts to understand the chemistry going on in their research on a sulfur-based battery -- real science, seeking a solid understanding of what is going on in the real world in order before moving forward. This stands in stark contrast to what we see in the media, with enormous predictions based on a little data processed through enormous, unseen and undiscussed assumptions hidden in computer models, or dramatic findings built on slim research with little apparent concern for missing, overlooking or misunderstanding much of what is really going on. Consider this a reading comprehension exercise -- begin!

Interesting point -- a bit past halfway through this spot a member of Congress beats on an oil company exec for producing oil, then later beats up on oil companies for not producing enough. I wonder whether the local news media in his district pick up on this so the public can ask him why he took such opposing positions, and what he actually thinks about gasoline supplies and prices. This is about how he exercises the power of his office, about his judgment, about his priorities, and so on. If he's playing games, they need to know it -- and if the news media don't raise the questions, people are left to shift for themselves.

Other than a bit of snarky references to "the left," this is a pretty solid, fair and well-based discussion of a prominent civil trial with a heavy weight on current political/social stresses. I appreciate in particular the group discussion in the latter half of the video which avoids the all-too-often see descent into annoying ideological posturing. Good effort, especially for a video (i.e., non-print) presentation.

Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton says there were “clear and repeated acts of deception” in actor Amber Heard’s testimony against ex-husband Johnny Depp.

If you're going to report on anything scientific, such as climate change or cancer, you really need to have a firm grasp on what Feynman lays out in this snippet from a lecture.

Pay particular attention around 5 minutes into the clip. There is too much really lousy reporting passing along weak and uncertain claims as though they were solid facts -- and then allowing such sorry excuses for science to drive policy and divide the community between those who accept the claims and those who reject them, or even question them. Don't be a tool, don't make tools of the people who rely on you. Got it? Good!

Very nice interview with a candid (but courteous) diplomat, going over what German leaders tried to accomplish with Putin's Russia, their intentions and understandings at the time, and now reflecting on how those efforts appear to have been in vain as well as, with distinctly German objectivity and realism, what the actual course of events means going forward. Also a nice reflection on how various members of the world community see things and the response of the world's leaders through the mechanism of the United Nations. Nicely done, informative, useful.

Take a good read through public comment #2, if your time is limited. The point is that the authors he's reviewing completely misstate the sources they're relying on -- like saying Arizona is wet based on an extensive studying showing it is dry.

This shows what a good editor should be doing with news reports, especially those based on some publication: look through the sources cited and read them, evaluate whether they're sound and whether they're being accurately and meaningfully used by the authors in the publication. It seems to be the standard practice these days to push out a story based on some second-hand push without even bothering to look at a freely-available source -- like a court decision -- and publish a report to the public that ends up feeding presumptions, prejudices, suspicions, fears and aggression. If this is what passes for news, you're probably better off without. Which appears to be the decision most people make, based on subscription and viewership statistics...

Very nice analysis on a topic (or set of related topics) of great public concern, and no small about of controversy! I appreciate not only the tone but the exploration of context and the clear respect shown to people as people, and not as representatives of some demographic or movement or philosophy. Editorials can promote the health and well-being of the community, they all too often just dump energy into conflicts -- by alienating and offending a target group within the community by gloming onto the prejudices and hostility of another. A lengthy discussion, and very much military in nature (hey, I'm an old tanker myself and a career soldier), but what is impressive is the discussion itself. You could take it as an opposing point in a debate, but our expert clearly acknowledges and explains all the points of agreement, explores the matters that are judgement calls, and uses a great deal of solid analysis to support the points he feels are important.

So wonderfully distinct from the conventional warfare of debates, where each side claims truth and wisdom and virtue supports its position and not the other side's, using exaggeration, misrepresentation, side-stepping, calls to emotion and all the other ways of fighting dirty that Schopenhauer laid out nearly two centuries ago (Google it, the art of being right). There is a link in the video to the other side, and it seems the two discussed the topic along the way with a pretty evident degree of respect and collegiality.

Someday we'll see this approach in public discussion of other matters of public concern. Someday.

Taking a slightly different tack on this debate. There has been much focus in recent years on the ability of various systems like drones and sensor-fuzed art...

Another excellent, if lengthy, discussion with so much information presented with plenty of context so you can improve your understanding of the situation of Covid, vaccines and vaccination policy, and so on. Equally important for our purposes, you can get some idea of how critical serious, honest press coverage is and how harmful it is to withhold, manipulate or misrepresent information. The public deserves to be trusted to make good decisions, and leaders need to be very careful not to be dismissive or skeptical about the ability of the public to consider complicated issues like public health during a pandemic.

I clicked on this with a little hesitancy, concerned that it might be just another polemic diatribe -- but it isn't. Really chock full of information, very much supported by good data from legit sources I'm already familiar with from my own efforts to make sense of what's going on out there, and while I might quibble a tiny bit here and there on word choice, this is the kind of briefing I'd give to the Chief of Staff of the Army without hesitation. It supports discussion and consultation, it builds on independent investigation of the truth, it shows an appreciation of the complexities of the real world and difficulties presented by an understanding of the problem set that changes over time.

I managed to fit in the full hour and a half of the talk into my busy schedule, if you're concerned about any aspect of the pandemic, you should to.

This would actually make for a great editorial -- has plenty of pertinent facts, with context, to provide a base for the commentary, and the commentary invites thought rather than insisting that you accept a specific set of conclusions.

At the same time, the good doctor points out just how the news media causes terrible problems by misinforming, concealing information, slathering political division over complex and challenging decisionmaking, and so. Very much worth listening through. Enjoy!

22/12/2021

Practicing physician discussing the apparently deliberate misrepresentation of simple data -- and we're talking simple numbers that can be explained and dealt with pretty simply -- by the head of the CDC and the news media's bigotry in deciding what to report and how to report it. Not at all a good thing. Not at all.

Credibility is a precious thing, when and injured, terribly difficult to heal. The military's credibility took a huge hit during the Vietnam war (by following the guidance of politicians to play the press in order to guide public opinion) that took a generation or more of generally consistent honesty and openness to overcome. Once regained, it has to be maintained, which takes even more effort every time some idiot tries to blow smoke to cover some act of stupidity -- not to be confused with finding out about a mistake, bad luck or brain fart. It takes some courage to be honest, and some intelligence to know how to continue the mission effectively when things don't go right.

The nation's journalistic-political industry is only barely aware of how its credibility has been injured by its in-your-face obvious abuses of trust. There may be plenty of people who are quite content being told stories they're already susceptible to believing, playing to an audience's prejudices can generate easy applause -- but the structure of today's media make those audiences ever smaller, even if more numerous, and you need to be aware of just how many people just don't go to any show at all. They've opted out of everyone's audience because they don't get any satisfaction out of being played, used like tools and played like toy horns.

These problems create a huge opportunity for a new journalism, one that provides consistent coverage on the matters the public needs to know, through reporting that is thorough, accurate, useful and meaningful, by professionals who respect the intelligence and decency of their audiences. Things to look forward to!
