Tom Waits: When you’re writing you’re conjuring. It’s a ritual, and you need to be brave and respectful and sometimes get out of the way of whatever it is that you’re inviting into the room. In that sense it’s something like a séance. You’re hoping it will rain in the room and you’re dressed for it. Which is always a complete act of faith.

Song ideas, if you’re a song catcher or driver or finder, sometimes they come at an inconvenient time – they’re like erotic thoughts in church. You don’t want it. I can’t handle it right now. So then it goes somewhere else and if you’re unable to capture it in the same form that it arrived in, then you put your mark on it in some way.
