PRINCE IN TORONTO 2004: “IF KIDS DON’T LEARN THE CRAFT OF SONGWRITING AND PLAYING REAL INSTRUMENTS WE’RE GOING TO LOSE THE ARTFORM.”

While touring in Toronto in 2004, where he produced his Musicology record, Prince was interviewed by MuchMoreMusic and this playful photo was captured during this interview when he remarked about the microphone that he found “pretty cool” and said playfully, “this got me doing advertisement whether I want to or not.”

He said to the Canadian Press in 2004: " Musicology is the first record I’ve recorded in Toronto and I can really feel the difference. It has a completely unique sound that came from the total disregard for what’s happening in American music, and for the workings of the American music industry. It doesn’t sound like anything else that’s out there right now.”

To MuchMoreMusic he said, “Music shows us that we are just all one people and we don’t deal in division. And Toronto is so indicative of that. I find so much peace here in Toronto and the relations among people who are so supposedly different are actually a lot better than they are in the United States. A lot of that is taught to us for a reason because it keeps us apart. It keeps the people in power in charge of us.

“What I’ve been doing a lot is studying the scriptures as deep as I can. That’s what gives me the optimism. It gives you hope and that’s a real thing."

He also spoke about how he as evolved over the years “like everybody else.” We’re just all an evolution all have to keep learning as we go along; we’re here to teach each other. I’m gonna continue speaking about it and I hope others do too.”

When asked about the state of music today he said, “I think everyone knows, even the audience, that a lot of music that comes out now is pre-packaged pop made with computers. One thing I think that is very important is if kids don’t learn the craft of songwriting and playing real instruments and making real music then we’re going to lose the art from and it will be technology based. There’s not much heart in that."

Mostly he cautioned that they should not feel that it’s just a party rife with alcoholism and promiscuity.

He ended by stating that he has a lot of music in his vault that he sometimes goes back to if it fits something he’s working on, but that it’s very rare because he writes new music all the time. He joked about being in studio rehab because he is up all hours creating music or coming down from a musical high with his band.

Michael Jackson's estate has again convinced an L.A. judge that the late performer's businesses can't be sued by Wade Robson over alleged childhood sexual abuse — but the long-running fight may not be over as the choreographer's lawyer has already said they'll appealing the decision.
