SailGP Will Canadians and Americans star in Halifax?!
ROCKWOOL Canada Sail Grand Prix Regatta (June 1-2, 2024), is the 11th event of the 4th Season of the SailGP cycle. There are still regattas in Halifax, New York and San Francisco to finish the cycle. Lots of indication that Canadians and Americans should play a leading role in these..
An hourly report of the regatta on Eurosport Polska on Thursday June 6 at 23.00
The general classification of the cycle leaves no illusions. The top three teams - New Zealand, Australia and Spain have a big advantage over the other teams and should not lose their places in the Grand Final in San Francisco, where the top three teams will advance after playing 13 events. Behind these teams, Denmark, France and Canada will fight a tight fight, because they are only separated by a three point difference. Among the other teams, the competition for the highest place in the final cycle's classification and showing off in the last three events will continue.
The highly ambitious and experienced Canadian crew Canada SailGP Team led by Phil Robertson is looking to fight for victory in Halifax regatta. The former world champion in match racing is one of the most aggressive buggers in the SailGP cycle, he has already had several spectacular successes, and now he would like to win the SailGP event in front of his own audience. There are many indications that the host crew will be in the following line-up:
Starter: Phil Robertson
Wing Trimmer: Paul Campbell-James
Flight Controller: Billy Gooderham
Grinder: Tom Ramshaw
Grinder: Jareese Finch
Reserve Grinder: Cooper Dressler
Strateg: Annie Haegar
Coach: Philippe Presti
Seventh place in the general ranking goes to United States SailGP Team and there is no chance to advance to the top three! Built a few months ago, however, the USA team has to improve its image and fight for high places on their home waters. At the last party in Bermuda, the American crew made several fatal mistakes, one of them ended with a yacht capsized and damaging the wing. It happened after the wing was turned upside down due to pressing the wrong button by Victor Diaz de Leon's wing trimmer. It happened during a training race and the damage was so severe that it couldn't be repaired before the Bermuda regatta started. As SailGP observers claim, this mistake is the result of improper and too little trimmer training on the F50 simulator. This should not happen during a race! So there is a lot of work and learning ahead for Americans, the difficult art of sailing F50 catamarans... Team USA skipper Taylor Canfield, trimmer Diaz de Leon and team CEO Mike Buckley have enjoyed great successes on kilo yachts in many regattas, but flying SailGP is a different thing! The first chance for team United States SailGP Team to race in front of the American fans will take place in New York from June 22-23 during the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix followed by the Grand Final 4. San Francisco SailGP season from July 13-14, 2024
The American SailGP team was bought this year by tech investor and Uber founder Ryan McKillen, Margaret McKillen and two-time world champion sailing Mike Buckley. They are joined by a diverse group of investors representing the sports, technology, entertainment and media industries. The Avenue Sports Fund, led by Avenue Capital Group CEO Marc Lasry, is a major investor in the team’s largest takeover in SailGP history. Other members of the investment group include actress and producer Issa Rae, world heavyweight champion boxer Deontay Wilder, world-class DJ and producer Griffin, and NFL stars DeAndre Hopkins, Malik Jackson, Roquan Smith and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Additional members include University of Alabama football star Dallas Turner, former American football player Jozy Altidore, University of Michigan basketball legend Katelynn Flaherty Yates, Muse Capital's Assia Grazioli-Venier and entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk. US SailGP Team Ryan McKillen serves as president and Mike Buckley as general manager. The team has named seven-time world champion Taylor Canfield as the team's manager, who replaced Jim Spithill in the post. Sadly, the team has also lost a very experienced wing trimmer Paul Campbell-James, who switched to the Canadian team and replaced Chris Draper there.
