Sardonic Wrath is the 10th studio album by Darkthrone. It was released 6 September 2004 by Moonfog Productions, and was the band's last album on that record label. It was also Darkthrone's last album recorded solely in the black metal style, with subsequent albums featuring stronger punk traits. However, Einar Sjursø observed in Terrorizer that "even if there is a certain punk attitude to the odd riff here and there" it is a case of "the diabolic duo [Fenriz and Nocturno Culto]...simply drawing more influences into the Darkthrone melting pot, turning them into crystalline Darkthrone riffs".

The entire album was leaked on the Internet beginning in April 2004, long before the September 2004 release date.

On the song "Hate Is the Law", vocals were performed by Fenriz and Apollyon.

This album is dedicated to the memory of Quorthon from Bathory.

Testimony of the Ancients is the third album by Pestilence (official), released on September 6, 1991 on Roadrunner Records. This was their first release with a new lineup, with Tony Choy replacing Martin van Drunen on bass, while guitarist Patrick Mameli filled in for the latter on vocals.

Following the departure of former bassist/vocalist Martin van Drunen, guitarist Patrick Mameli took over vocal duties. Mameli steered the band towards a more melodic and technical approach, expanding on the death metal sound of its predecessor Consuming Impulse. The resulting concept album, Testimony of the Ancients contrasted brutal death metal riffs with melodic interludes and tackled what John Serba describes as, "strangely philosophical, and oddly compelling, subject matter". After each song on the album, there was an instrumental outro track. This attempt to push the boundaries of death metal, at a time when the scene was saturated with copycat "one track minded" bands, mirrored the efforts of fellow progressive bands Atheist and Death who released Unquestionable Presence and Human respectively in 1991, the same year as Testimony. The album can also be seen as a stepping stone on the way to the following Pestilence album Spheres, which departed still further from traditional death metal and headed towards jazz fusion.

Virus is the tenth studio album by Hypocrisy. It was released on September 5, 2005 by Nuclear Blast. It is the first Hypocrisy album recorded with their new drummer Horgh from the black metal band Immortal and second guitarist Andreas Holma. The album features a music video for the song "Scrutinized".

Early pressings of the CD were sold with a 13-song limited edition live DVD, with 12 songs recorded in Strasbourg on Hypocrisy's 2004 tour as support of Cannibal Co**se, and from a different show they play the song "Total Disaster" by Destruction along with the band's vocalist and bass guitar player Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer. Some CDs have a bonus track, "Watch Out", which appears to be a demo of a song recorded in 2000.

Some early pressings have an error where a scratch sound can be heard on tracks 6 and 11. The Nuclear Blast record label said it would mail a replacement to anyone who had one of these glitched discs.

Rock You to Hell is the third studio album by Grim Reaper, released on September 5, 1987 under the RCA label. This was the band's final album for 29 years (until the release of Walking in the Shadows in 2016, under the name Steve Grimmett's Grim Reaper), and their last one to feature guitarist Nick Bowcott, bassist Dave Wanklin and drummer Marc Simon. Grim Reaper gained brief mainstream critical and commercial success with this album, due to the regular airplay of "Rock You to Hell" on MTV's Headbangers Ball and album-oriented rock radio stations.

Rock 'n' Roll is the 8th studio album by Official Motörhead, released on September 5, 1987. It is their last album with the GWR label, as more legal issues embroiled the band with yet another label. Reaching only No. 34 in the UK Albums Chart, Rock 'n' Roll was, in that respect, the worst performing of all of Motörhead's top 40 chart hits.
Now considered to be classic, back then wasn't as with the previous two albums a commercial success. It would see the return of 'classic line up' drummer Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor, albeit only for a few more years before being fired.

Joe Petagno had other ideas for the cover of this album:
"I had this great idea and nobody wanted to listen to me. The original Rock 'N' Roll sleeve was supposed to be going up. I said, "Look, the tongue goes up. This thing is lifting off...it was supposed to be rocketing. So it was like a bomb. A projectile of some sort. When I finished it, they said, 'We can't have it going up, it doesn't make any sense'. So it's coming down. Couldn't convince them. This fu***ng band...(laughs)"

Raising Fear is the third studio album by Armored Saint. It was released in 1987 via Chrysalis Records. The band recorded the album as a four-piece as guitarist Phil Sandoval had left Armored Saint during the recording of its previous album, Delirious Nomad, although he rejoined the band a few years later.

After Raising Fear was released, Chrysalis dropped the band. This was the last Armored Saint studio album with guitarist Dave Prichard, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1989 and died of the disease the following year, as the band was preparing for their next album Symbol of Salvation.

Black Seeds of Vengeance is the second album by Nile, released on September 5, 2000, via Relapse Records It was the first album in Nile's discography to mark a more complex musical direction, as well as feature extensive liner notes in the booklet, written by Karl Sanders to explain the concept and themes behind each song. It also was the band's first album recorded with vocalist/guitarist Dallas Toler-Wade (who performed with the band until 2017), and features Derek Roddy as a session drummer, temporarily replacing previous drummer Pete Hammoura who left the band due to injuries sustained while touring. The Book of Souls is the sixteenth studio album by Iron Maiden, released on 4 September 2015. It is the band's first studio double album, and also their longest to date, with a total length of 92 minutes and 11 seconds. Its launch and supporting tour were delayed to allow vocalist Bruce Dickinson time to recover from the removal of a cancerous tumour in early 2015. It is also their first album to be released on Parlophone, since the end of their 30-year relationship with EMI Records.

Jane Doe is the fourth studio album by Converge, released on September 4, 2001 by Equal Vision Records. The album was produced by Matthew Ellard alongside guitarist Kurt Ballou, and the artwork was designed by lead vocalist Jacob Bannon. It was the band's first album to feature bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller, and the last to feature guitarist Aaron Dalbec; Converge's line-up has remained stable since.

Although Jane Doe did not chart, it was a commercial breakthrough for the band and received immediate acclaim, with critics praising its poetic lyrics, dynamics, ferocity and production. It has since been listed as one of the greatest albums of the metalcore genre by various publications, and has developed a cult following, with the cover art becoming an icon of the band. A live version titled Jane Live was released in 2017.

Horrorscope is the fifth studio album by Overkill, released on September 3, 1991, through Atlantic and Megaforce Records. It was the first Overkill album to feature the duo of guitarists Merritt Gant and Rob Cannavino, and the last to be released through Megaforce, although they remained on Atlantic until 1995. Like its predecessor, The Years of Decay (1989), Horrorscope was produced by Terry Date.

Following the departure of longtime guitarist and songwriter Bobby Gustafson, who left or was fired from the band amid a feud with its founding members Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth (vocals) and D. D. Verni (bass), Overkill added two new guitarists in Cannavino (who had been Gustafson's guitar technician) and Gant (previously from thrash metal band Faith or Fear). Drummer Sid Falck left the band during the Horrorscope tour in 1992, and was replaced by former M.O.D. drummer Tim Mallare.

Powerslave is the fifth studio album by Iron Maiden, released on 3 September 1984 through EMI Records in Europe and its sister label Capitol Records in North America.

The songs "2 Minutes to Midnight" and "Aces High" were released as singles. Its cover artwork is notable for its Ancient Egypt theme. That theme, taken from the title track, was carried over to the album's supporting tour, the World Slavery Tour. This began in Warsaw, Poland, on 9 August 1984; it is widely regarded as being the band's longest and most arduous tour to date, and led to the live album Live After Death.

The release contains a musical re-telling of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the lyrics of which include some lines from the poem. At 13 minutes and 45 seconds in length, this was Iron Maiden's longest song for over 30 years until it was surpassed by the 18-minute "Empire of the Clouds" from the 2015 album The Book of Souls.

Powerslave is notable as the band's first album to feature the same personnel as their previous studio release. This lineup would remain intact for two further studio releases. It is also their last album to date to feature an instrumental piece, and the only one until Senjutsu (2021) in which longtime member and guitarist Dave Murray does not have a songwriting credit.

Morning Star is the 7th studio album by Entombed, released on 3 September 2001. The album is more experimental than previous efforts, and shows the band returning to a more traditional death metal sound overall, though without abandoning elements of death 'n' roll. It also introduces a handful of straightforward, fast-paced death/thrash tracks, a first for the band at the time.

The lyrics for the song "I for an Eye" were written by Orvar Säfström who was also stand-in vocalist for the band in 1991 on the EP Crawl. The song "When It Hits Home" is influenced by the 1997 film The Devil's Advocate, while also the lyrics to "Chief Rebel Angel" are in several cases based on quotes from The Devil's Advocate film

03/09/2024

Painkiller is the 12fth studio album by Judas Priest, released on September 3, 1990. It was the last Judas Priest album to feature long-time lead singer Rob Halford until his return for the 2005 album Angel of Retribution and the first to feature drummer Scott Travis.

Painkiller is the first Judas Priest album to feature drummer Scott Travis, who replaced long-time drummer Dave Holland in 1989. Travis was previously a member of Los Angeles band Racer X and with his heavy use of double kicks, Travis gave Judas Priest a new sound and heavier edge. Painkiller was described as heavy metal and, due to its relatively intense sound, speed metal.

The album was recorded at Miraval Studios, Brignoles, France in early 1990 and mixed at Wisseloord Studios, Hilversum, the Netherlands later that year. It was produced by the band and Chris Tsangarides, marking the first time since 1978's Killing Machine that Judas Priest had not worked with Tom Allom and the first time since 1976's Sad Wings of Destiny that Judas Priest and Tsangarides worked together.

Don Airey was brought in to play keyboards on "A Touch of Evil". In a 2020 interview, Airey revealed that he also doubled most of the album's bass parts on a Minimoog synthesizer, to achieve the album's distinctive bass sound.

Despite the album being finished in March 1990, the album's release was delayed due to the pending, much-publicized subliminal message trial that began on 16 July 1990. The band was the subject of a civil lawsuit alleging their recording was responsible for the su***de attempts of two young men in Reno, Nevada on 23 December 1985. The case was eventually dismissed on 24 August 1990. With the trial behind them, the band finally released the album on 14 September 1990 on LP, cassette and CD.

The album was certified Gold by RIAA in January 1991. A remastered CD was released in May 2001, including a live recording of "Leather Rebel" and a previously unreleased song, "Living Bad Dreams". The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 33rd Annual Grammy Awards, losing to Metallica's cover of the Queen song "Stone Cold Crazy".

Chaos A.D. is the fifth studio album by Sepultura, released on September 2,1993 by Roadrunner Records. The album saw a stylistic departure from the band's earlier thrash metal style, by featuring a new groove metal sound. Chaos A.D. is also Sepultura's only album on Epic Records, who handled its release for North American distribution, as well as the first album to feature Paulo Jr. on bass after having played with the band in a live capacity since 1984.

The band considered a number of producers, including avant-garde jazz composer John Zorn and Al Jourgensen of industrial metal pioneers Ministry. They ultimately chose Andy Wallace, who had previously mixed Arise. Sepultura wanted isolation, and for that Andy Wallace suggested Rockfield Studios, located in South Wales.[6] The recording sessions marked the first time Sepultura had recorded as a quartet as opposed to a trio, which saw Andreas Kisser handling both bass and guitar duties on their previous three albums; as such, Chaos A.D. was the first album to include Paulo Jr., who had been playing live with the band since joining in 1984.

"Kaiowas" was recorded live among the ruins of the medieval castle of Chepstow. It was an entirely acoustic track, with Kisser and Max Cavalera on the guitars and drummer Igor Cavalera and Paulo Jr. on percussion. When they recorded "Kaiowas", the quartet never even considered playing the track live, because they thought it would be too difficult to recreate the drumming on stage. They changed their minds after seeing a video of the American band Neurosis: "We saw in that live video that the Neurosis guys put down their guitars and everybody started to play the drums on stage", lead guitarist Andreas remembers. "We decided to try the same thing. We rehearsed it once and it was wonderful. We haven't stopped playing the song live since."

During recording sessions, Sepultura recorded a number of covers: "The Hunt", from New Model Army, "Polícia", from Titãs, "Inhuman Nature", from the American hardcore punk band Final Conflict, and "Crucificados pelo Sistema", from Brazilian Ratos de Porão. Igor, a New Model Army fan, convinced the other band members to include "The Hunt" on the record. Paulo joked that the money of the LP would go straight to new dentures for Justin Sullivan, the toothless singer of New Model Army. The latter 3 covers would be included as B-sides and also on the compilation Blood-Rooted. "Polícia" is also included as a bonus track on the Brazilian edition of the album. Up until the time the album was due, the title was originally Propaganda after track 6, but Max Cavalera changed it to Chaos A.D. after the Misfits' Earth A.D.

The Fourth Dimension is the 3rd studio album by Hypocrisy on September 1, 1994. The album was written, recorded and produced by band leader Peter Tägtgren and was a departure from the more up tempo death metal, to a slower, doomier and melodic side of the band. A departure from the former logo art and a more simplistic cover art, although on the back and inside of the CD, was the original Hypocrisy logo.

The Sound of Perseverance is the 7th and swan song studio album by Death, released on August 31, 1998 by Nuclear Blast.

Death (Official)

The album featured guitarist Shannon Hamm, drummer Richard Christy, and bassist Scott Clendenin for the first time. It was also Death's final studio album, as Chuck Schuldiner died due to brain cancer-related issues in 2001, and Death subsequently disbanded.

In an interview done in March 1999, Chuck Schuldiner stated that the acoustic guitar-driven "Voice of the Soul" was actually written during the Symbolic sessions. Death has produced only two instrumentals (the other being "Cosmic Sea" from Human).

"The Moment of Clarity" was expected be the title track on the first Control Denied album; other tracks from the album would have included "What If" and "Cut Down to Size", which were all worked on in 1997, though the first song was retooled as a Death song and released on The Sound of Perseverance. Schuldiner stated in an interview with Metal Maniacs the following year that none of his compositions for Control Denied had been used to fill space for a Death album. The former singer of Control Denied, Tim Aymar, confirmed in December 2010 that a few of the Control Denied songs had been, in his words, "'Deathized' and recorded on TSOP."

The Judas Priest ultra hymn Painkiller was intended as a bonus track for Japan, but Nuclear Blast recommended that it be included on all releases.

🇬🇧ANNOUNCEMENT: GRFers, we're still here, holding strong! Despite the cancellation of today's - the second - day due to the rain, we have two surprises for you!

First, our beloved Warlord will be performing live on the third and final day of GRF! As for our favorite band, Destruction, although they would have loved to, due to their flights and schedules, it's not possible for them to perform. However, they proposed - and we have immense respect for this - two separate performances that will be FREE for ticket holders, and we'll have announcements about those soon. Additionally, ticket holders for the second day will also be able to attend the third day of GRF FREE of charge!

We want to thank the hundreds of friends who flooded our inboxes with messages of support.

The morning will be followed by the new full program of the day.

30/08/2024

Speak English or Die is considered to one of the greatest and most influential crossover thrash albums of all time and it is the debut album by the American crossover thrash band Stormtroopers of Death, and was released on August 30, 1985.

Parts of the songs "March of the S.O.D.", "Milano Mosh", "Chromatic Death" and "Sargent D and the S.O.D." were used for commercial breaks of MTV's Headbangers Ball in the early 1990s.

After Anthrax finished recording Spreading the Disease, there was still some studio time left, so members Scott Ian and Charlie Benante called some friends, practiced some songs, and recorded it all within a week.

Many point to this album – and particularly the song "Milk" – as one of the first songs to feature a blast beat, courtesy of Benante. When asked in 2009 if he invented the blast beat, Benante replied, "If you mean that I decided to sit in my room and invent it, no it wasn't like that. The thing was something that had been around the NY hardcore scene for ages but hadn't been used for other things. The first time it really happened was on S.O. D's 'Milk' song, so I guess you could say I had a lot to do with it. Now a lot of bands are using it and doing it really well."

The album had some controversy due to the lyrics, which addressed homosexuality, women and foreign cultures. Dan Lilker stated, "The lyrics were never intended to be serious, just to p**s people off."

In an interview with Songfacts in 2014, when asked "If Speak English or Die came out today, do you think that because of the political correctness of today, it would go over the same?", Lilker responded, "It probably would have had a harder time just because people seem to be more uptight now. Nevertheless, it was what it was, which is saying it is what it is, but back then. And I don't regret it. Maybe minor aspects went overboard with certain lyrical things, but then again, we didn't really mean them. Perhaps if people realize that, then it's just more funny."
