Creating a brave space for my children is one thing I love about being a parent. When I set out to design Alani’s room, I wanted it to embody antiracist values and truly reflect her.

Initially, I thought achieving this would require expensive purchases and exhaustive research. But with just a few simple steps, I transformed her space to mirror the world around her, affirm her identity, and grow her curiosity about different cultures, ideas, and perspectives. What other tips do you have for creating inclusive spaces for our little ones?

Before I became a mom, I didn’t realize there was so much talk about whether moms stay at home or work outside of it . The more I got into influencer culture, the more I saw this debate. Social media loves to pit moms against each other, with stereotypes and unfair judgments that make it hard for moms from all backgrounds to connect.

I remember being criticized for sending my child to daycare as if I wasn’t raising them myself. It made me think about all the unfair assumptions we make about moms without understanding their struggles. It’s like there’s a competition for who has it worst. But really, every mom faces challenges, just in different ways.

Parenting is hard, no matter which way you go about it. We all have to choose or are given a hand that holds which hard we work with. I find it so inspiring to hear about my friends’ lives, their struggles, their joys, and how life impacts them in different ways. Imagine if we spent all that time that we debate about who has it worst or better on the internet into building relationships and having conversations, we might just have the understanding we need to support moms in every scenario.
