Recently, cities across NES have seen women and men taking to the streets, marching to express anger at the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini by the Iranian morality police, commitment to a fight for women's liberation, and solidarity with the protests in Iran.
The Kurdish slogan, 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi', as heard in this video, has been used by women in NES for years, owing to its history and meaning within the anti-oppression fight of Kurdish women more broadly. This slogan, meaning 'Woman, Life, Freedom' in English, has been heard in many languages at protests across the world, since the killing of Jina Amini.
In Qamishlo and Kobane, the marches ended with women cutting their hair and burning their headscarves, symbolising women's right to make their own choices.
Local media have released a video purportedly showing an ISIS graduation ceremony for girls in Hol camp. The women - who speak in Russian - are seen handing out diplomas under an ISIS banner.
RIC visited Hol last week, where the foreigners' Annex's camp administration told us most women don't send their children to the sole NGO-operated school in the section, but instead indoctrinate them. Children are often caught destroying the school building & adjacent playground.
Hol camp has seen an unusually high amount of murders this week. 3 women were killed in the Iraqi & Syrian sections of the camp, 2 of them were decapitated. A man was found shot dead yesterday. Additionally, a woman was shot in the head but survived on the 23rd.
In total, at least 8 people have been killed in Hol camp in June. Last month it was 6.
On June 14, Hol's camp administration warned that Turkey's war threats were "paving the way for terrorist organizations in Syria, especially in al-Hol camp, to re-organize themselves."
The funeral of Ferhad Shibli
Yesterday, Ferhad Shibli was put to rest at the martyrs' cemetery in Derik. The former deputy co-chair of the AANES Executive Council was killed by a Turkish drone attack on his car in Iraqi Kurdistan on June 17.
Sheikh Maqsoud & Ashrafiyah Neighborhoods
The AANES-controlled neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud & Ashrafiyah in Aleppo have fought off jihadist militias & periodic embargos by the Syrian government.
Basic staples were not let into the neighborhoods by SAA forces for a month and a half following a shootout with Asayish security forces on March 13.
This was far from the first embargo. In April 2021, when RIC visited, the Aleppo neighborhoods & the Shehba exclave - both of which are largely populated by Afrin IDPs - were suffering from debilitating SAR-induced shortages of fuel & basic goods.
Find out more about the two neighborhoods in our latest video.
The AANES Oil Department is introducing e-cards to "reduce congestion at gas stations," according to the department's statement. Fuel will be allocated as follows:
- 150l of diesel per month for small cars
- 200l for medium cars
- 300l for large cars
- 400l for very large cars
The Oil Department called these cards "temporary," though, in June, the AANES had promised to digitize fuel provision, including by introducing e-cards & an app. These measures were meant to reduce waiting times at gas stations & share fuel more equally.
A first look at the app:

Residents & military personnel celebrate the end of fighting in Heseke on the 7th anniversary of the liberation of Kobane.
[BREAKING]
A prison escape is currently being attempted in the Sina'a Prison of Heseke, which holds around 5,000 ISIS prisoners. Initial reports say 15-20 prisoners escaped.
2 prison wards have reportedly been injured & there are a number of casualties among the inmates.
A powerful explosion rocked al-Ghweiran neighbourhood this evening, likely blasting the prison walls, with initial reports saying it was a car bomb. The escape appears identical to the thwarted plan of November.
Coalition helicopters are flying overhead as shooting continues.
During a raid in November, Asayish & SDF arrested 5 & confiscated a car bomb and several dozen weapons.
On Christmas Day, the SDF arrested the alleged mastermind of the prison escape. SDF had raided & killed another ISIS suspect in Manbij yesterday.

In a first-of-its-kind operation, what is believed to be a Russian plane yesterday bombed a training camp of an SNA militia within Turkish-occupied Afrin (in blue).
The camp at Iskan is under the control of the Faylaq al-Sham militia (purple), close to a Turkish intelligence base.
The Muslim Brotherhood-near militia occupies the SE of Afrin, as well as pockets in the NW. It has been accused by Amnesty International of “serious human rights violations,” including the torture of detainees. Some of its militiamen have fought as mercenaries in Armenia & Libya.
The attack reportedly killed 5 Faylaq al-Sham members. The militia, originally from Aleppo, was previously hit by Russian bombs in October of 2020, when their training camp at Kafr Takharim, in Idlib, was targeted. The attack killed at least 78 militiamen and wounded over 100.
17km to the north, the city of Afrin was hit by shells the night before, wounding many civilians. Turkish occupation forces again blamed the Afrin Liberation Forces for the attack, though no conclusive evidence has been made public.
Turkish forces used the attack as a premise to shell multiple targets across Shehba.
A Turkish drone attack at al-Banikah, east of Til Rifaat, killed & wounded multiple SDF soldiers today. In its aftermath, the ALF targeted Turkish positions at Hazwan.

The Netherlands repatriated 4 ISIS affiliates from al-Roj camp today. A mother and her two children, as well a child whose now-deceased mother had kidnapped her away from the father, were handed to a delegation headed by Emiel De Bont, the Dutch Special Envoy to Syria.
De Bont stressed the repatriation occurred as part of a "very specific consular legal mission" in the context of legal decisions made by a Dutch court.
The woman faces legal prosecution in the NL. A judge had decreed that if unable to be present, her case would be thrown out.
With 660 repatriations so far in 2021, this year is set to surpass any other year since 2017. The highest rate of repatriations had occurred in 2019, when 736 ISIS affiliates returned.
'Platform for Conflict Victims in NES' founding meeting
Yesterday, the 'Platform for Conflict Victims in NES' founding meeting was held in Qamishlo.
The Platform - an alliance of victims' associations & civil society created by 'Rights Defence Initiative' & co-sponsored by Fight for Humanity - advocates for victims of ISIS & other groups.
It aims to involve victims in post-ISIS reconstruction & establish investigative & legal frameworks conform with international standards to hold perpetrators accountable. Victims must be meaningfully involved in transitional justice. Missing persons must be searched for
During the Platform's first meeting, members presented the findings of previous sub-meetings held in Heseke & Raqqa, discussed amendments to the constituent document & elected the administrative body.
The Platform was attended by human rights organizations, AANES officials, civil society groups, tribal elders & victim's families.
Its board reflects NES' regional diversity. For instance, Deir ez-Zor Shaitat tribe elders & Tel Tamir's Assyrians both have a seat at the table.
While the Platform focused on the victims of ISIS, Agit Ibrahim, Director of Rights Defence Initiative, said another platform would be held for the victims of Turkish-backed groups whose crimes against NES civilians according to him are similar to ISIS'.
"There is no difference between killing people with bombs or cutting people's water."
We provided footage and commentary for Insider's report about Turkey's use of water as a weapon of war.
Yesterday, an Asayish soldier was killed at al-Wahda roundabout in southern Qamishlo when a detachment of SAR-affiliated Difa al-Watani opened fire on his checkpoint.
This event led to clashes in al-Tayy & Helku neighbourhood in Qamishlo.
Asayish sources confirmed to RIC that the conflict began when Abdul Fattah al-Laylu, an NDF commander, was held up & his papers confiscated at an Asayish checkpoint. As he was let go, he shot & killed Khalid Haji, responsible for Asayish checkpoints, in anger.
The same source disclosed that dozens of NDF militia surrendered to Asayish, as the Damascus government refused to back their attack.
Sunday, the Autonomous Administration handed 34 Russian orphan children of ISIS mercenaries over to a delegation of the Russian Federation.
