The Time Traveler's Tavern Join us to pass time in good company with our curious & spirited discussions!

I’m Sister Mary Margaret Mead-Hall and with The Traveling Anchoress, we dust off the interesting bits of Medieval and Renaissance history and make more than a few bad puns.

My good and Podly People, I came across this missive and needed to share it.
How do you feel about The Canterbury Tales bring given a "trigger warning" for containing Christian content?
I'll add my opinion in the comments.

A UK university is under fire after putting a trigger warning for "expressions of Christian faith" on Geoffrey Chaucer's book 'The Canterbury Tales'.

My dearest Tavern Denizens,
We are experiencing technical difficulties with this month's episode. I have not heard from my Beloved Sister in Pod, The Traveling Anchoress, since she left on her journey to Kells! In this dark time of the year when the line between the Seen and Unseen worlds is so thin, who knows what perils may befall her? I fear for her safety! Did she have a run-in with the Good Folk of Ireland? Hath she seen the Death Coach? Did she meet a charming, suave Abbot with a rakish smile, goodly whiskey, and whose Irish eyes are smiling?
To stay my worries, I officially sacked the Scribes, which did in turn, improve my humor.
I have called on the assistance of our Sister Scholastica Perpetua of the Book. It is with her gracious help and abundant knowledge that we will bring forth October's episode soon.
Don't forget to subscribe so you'll be the first to know when our Superb Supernatural Episode is available!

Oooh, how timely!
Here's some information on Queen Elizabeth's "Rainbow Portrait" that was discussed in September's episode, "An Elizabethan Embroidery Primer".

The “Rainbow Portrait” of Queen Elizabeth I has been restored and returned to Hatfield House, revealing hidden details from the Tudor era.

I hope you're all enjoying the good hour of Sext, my friends in Pod.

We have a lot going on at the Tavern this month! The scribes are busy editing a deep dive discussion into Elizabethan embroidery with Liz Scott (Elizabeth de Belcaire).

If you're a fan of the Renaissance English History podcast, you're already aware that TudorCon is happening at Agecroft Hall in Richmond, VA. It's an annual convention for all things Tudor at the only Tudor manor house in the US. In person tickets are sold out but streaming tickets are still available. Of course it's the weekend of Sept., 20 to 22, when so many other events are happening, but the lectures will be recorded. I hope to purchase a ticket to stream the event and would love to attend in person some year. The manor and gardens look amazing!

Mayhap we could arrange for a group trip, depending on the dates of future TudorCons?

Join us at the Tavern for our first "Tavern Talk" to discuss whether we can truly recreate history.
We'll enjoy a tasty recipe for "Split Nuns" (or deviled eggs) from the oldest, extant Dutch cookbook, learn more about Margery Kempe, and find out why Liberty bashes the Victorians!
Don't forget to like, follow, and subscribe to The Time Traveler's Tavern! We're on most major pod catchers now, including Youtube!

Good morning, my friends.
Due to a series of unfortunate and fortunate circumstances, the podcast will be out late this month.
Please look for our first "Tavern Talk" episode to be out next week. A group of us in the Tavern will discuss "Can we truly study or recreate history?"
And as a bonus, to apologize for the late episode, I'm adding two outtakes from my discussion with Liberty last month. You'll learn more about the mystic, Margery Kemp, and additional reasons why Liberty holds grudges against Victorian historians.
Watch this space closely next week for "Tavern Talk" with a side of Liberty's Leftovers!

I'm happy that so many folks are enjoying the Canterbury Tales discussion. If you like what we're learning about in the Tavern, please share us with a friend!

A friend reached out with a question for Liberty about the episode. I'll post the question and the answer here.
Liberty also sent two links for the prologue, which I'll post below in the comments.

The question: Since we don't have an original manuscript and writers traded stories, how do we know it was.Chaucer who wrote the Canterbury Tales?

Liberty's reply:
Well, they're attributed to Chaucer wherever they show up. The tales are also consistent with his other works, and a lot of people respond to his works, referencing him. His life is also fairly well attested, other than a short period when he was young. Basically, it would have to be an international conspiracy to fake him as the author, since all the context and attributions point to him. We often don't have an initial author's copy of a lot of medieval stuff, since it was luck of the draw if a manuscript survived, was destroyed, or got made into a lampshade by the Victorians (still blaming them). The fact that the tales survive in so many manuscripts shows how influential he was.

Happy July, my Friends in Pod!
I hope you're keeping cool (figuratively and literally) during these strange times this summer. Here at the Tavern, we've been tolerating the weather and keeping our heads above water (again, figuratively and literally with our second flood in the same number of years). But enough with our weary world! Let us turn our thoughts to Pod.
I have some very exciting news to share! Building has commenced on the Tavern's library! Our good Tavern has been approved as an affiliate with bookshop.org, where every purchase from their site financially supports independent bookstores. Our scribes have started to compile a list of books, either suggested during our interviews or ones that might be of interest to those here in the Tavern. Your purchases from the completed list will support independent book stores, support us to keep the candles burning at the Tavern, and give you an interesting read?
(No, it's not a coincidence that we're sharing this news during Amazon Prime Days)
I'll post a link to the Tavern's storefront at Bookshop once the list is ready. Feel free to share some of your favorite fiction or non-fiction books in the comments and they'll be added to the list.

How are we doing today, my dear friends in Pod?
It's been a tough week for many of us and I do pray the upcoming, blessedly short week, treats us all much more gently.
I hope you're all enjoying the full-length episodes on medieval medicine and Grimores!
For July, our scribes are editing a discussion of The Canterbury Tales! It's truly sad that the humor is oft times stripped out of them when they're taught in school.
What topics would you like to have discussed on upcoming episodes? I have some delightful ideas but I'd love to hear of your interests, my dears!

My dear friends in Pod,

Have you been studying your Agrippa? Not the fencer - the philosopher!

(I personally prefer capybara's fencing techniques)

Would you care for a nice cooling draft made with lemon balm to help ease the summer's heat? Learn to make this 'comforting infusion' that serves as a 'sovereign remedy for melancholy' from a receipt in the Anchoress' missive.

Join me, Sister Mary Margaret MeadHall, this month at the Time Traveler's Tavern to learn about Grimoires, also known as books of magic, from antiquity to the Renaissance!

Have you been studying your Agrippa? No, not the fencing guy, the philosopher! Join us at the Tavern as Travis Shores takes us through the history of grimoires, also known as books of magic, from antiquity to the Renaissance.
