Was a ‘real good time’ sharing poetry and community with the vendors in town for ‘Shakedown’ along with Dead and Company , this weekend in Vegas.

I LOVE sharing the writing of Deadheads, with one the other, and love it even MORE when ‘heads share poetry with us!

Thank you, Las Vegas, for a great couple shows!

We are super stoked to announce that California poet and writer D.L. Lang will be editing this project!
Poetry is Dead II: Once You're Dead, You're Dead Forever

D.L. Lang is a former poet laureate of Vallejo, California. Lang has been listening to the Grateful Dead since she was a teenager in Oklahoma in the late‘90s.
She adores their folk inspired albums, Workingman's Dead and American Beauty the most.
She feels that her spirit belongs with the counterculture crowd of Beats, bohemians, hippies, and folkies, which eventually led her to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Her poetry has been used as liturgy, transformed into songs, and used to advocate for peace, justice, and a better world. Lang is an internationally published poet whose work appears in over 70 anthologies.
In addition to Poetry is Dead: An Inclusive Anthology of Deadhead Poetry (Hercules, 2022), her music inspired poetry appears in Remembering Woody Guthrie (Moonstone, 2023), Starman Oddity (Fevers of the Mind, 2024) and The Rastaman (Alien Buddha, 2021).

She also edited the poetry anthologies Verses, Voices, & Visions of Vallejo (2019) and the forthcoming A Decade of Poetic Unity: Celebrating Vallejo’s Poets Laureate (2025).
As a winner of the 2023 Curbside Haiku Contest, her haiku was displayed across downtown Tulsa and is archived at the Woody Guthrie Center. She is a member of the Revolutionary Poets Brigade and a two time Woody Guthrie Poet. Lang was recognized by the California State Senate and California Arts Council for her service as poet laureate.
She is the author of 17 poetry collections, and has performed hundreds of times at festivals, demonstrations and literary events. Find out more at poetryebook.com

We are so lucky to have her aboard, as editor on this project!
Make her feel welcomed, and get those poems sent in!

"We saw that the art of poetry was essentially dead—killed by war, by academies, by neglect, by lack of love, and by disinterest. We knew we could bring it back to life."

I-25 North (2019)

$70,000 pickup truck
Passes me on I-25 North
Leaving Albuquerque
Glass and chrome
Windows dark and tinted
Single driver
Empty bed
Even the tires gleam
In the high-desert noon

Contrasting
or gilding
Enhancing
or gelding
The matte, white, plastic
Anarchy decal
On the back windshield
Oversized

And we both pass by
The Pueblo man
Hitchhiking
North of Algodones
Moving in other directions
Shrinking in our
Common rearview

I'm reserving the possibility of another date or two, between now and then, but this year, after over 20 summers in a row, out smoking the Interstates and State Highways until only roaches remain in the ashtrays, I'm scaling back my performance schedule...no 'tour' as such, this summer.

Besides, lots of young folks, especially through the Midwest and the Northeast and Mid Atlantic are out there DOING the non-Slam, high energy, audience focused, highly engaging, poetry roadwork that keeps our kind of poetry honest.
That hasn't always been true, but from upstate NY to Busboys & Poets, and from where the Big Sioux flows and falls, to tiny college towns in Lower Appalacia, it's happening and it is beautiful to have lived to see it!

I'm trying my best to help and support this grassroots poetic reniassance of celebration and non-competition when and where I can, but I'm mostly keeping my 50-year old white ass out of the way.

Only a few performances and no workshops scheduled, this year.

I do hope to catch ya out there, if you can make it!

SAN FRANCISCO BAY HAIKU SUITE (2004)

Trungpa, crazy monk
I hear his echoes ringing
Everywhere I look

Kerouac was a
jackal, liar, false prophet
Truly, a holy man

Out in Peoples’ Park
God is kicking back until
Food not Bombs arrives

Tonight I want to
Drink strong, cheap, liquor
Embarcadero buzz

In the Golden Gate
Men’s room, two Tibetan monks
Lift their robes and p**s

"...A vein, not an artery; removing the unappreciated..."

NETWORK FAILURE (2023)

Compass and chart guide true
Yet forsake me at the crossroads
The network is down, this decade
Autonomous identity
This tangent be praised

All means and ambition, squandered
Unmade beds in highway rooms, elevated
Holding tight to that magnetized ladder
In hopes of joining the password protected in their privilege
A vein, not an artery; removing the unappreciated

Lost in the mercy of Mercury
Th a trace of heavy metal aftertaste
Turns my belly sour in the pre-dawn
Bounded by the popular demand to dwindle
To make myself silent and unseen in these spaces

Compelling rouges and rebels
To bend as bent and slant
Exactly as expected and directed
I drove here, myself
The entire, unmade, continent behind me

Wear of the road, odometer clicking
Miles and mystery, received as sacrament
The network still isn’t working for me
Node of redemption shining, unreachable
Steel mesh and razor-wire boundaries abound

Fitting perfectly with the conformity
The hem at the bottom, unfinished and frayed
Network failure
Network failure
