🚨 Reminder to check your mobile site! 🚨

if you designed or manage your own website, this is your routine reminder to make sure that your site function and design are optimized for the mobile experience.

WHY?
So many people use their phones to check out your website and while it's important to have a great desktop version of your site, the mobile version is just as important. This is your first impression to new customers, and this is how you communicate with your active customers. If you ignore the mobile experience, you are doing yourself and your business a disservice.

WHAT DO I CHECK
✅ Make sure that the text is still readable on a phone, not too small or too large.
✅ Ensure that buttons are clickable for the average person, teeny tiny buttons can be very frustrating.
✅ Check that images are responsive - which means that they are growing and shrinking with the size of the screen and not getting cut off (like the headless lady in my photo.)

HOW TO FIX
👉 Fear not! Most platforms have an option to edit both your desktop and mobile sites. Always double check your movtsite when making edits or additions to your website.

👉 For Shopify users, the mobile version of your site is automated and you don't have to make any edits
That being said, I would still always double check to make sure that it's looking and functioning good (for example, the images may be responsive, but you could still get a headless lady if the wrong part of the image is the focal point.)

👉 For Squarespace and Wix users, you can actually customize and adjust the mobile site as you please which is great, BUT can also mean that your mobile site can look wonky if you don't check it. Because it's not automatically optimized for the mobile experience you actually have to double check that the items are in the order and design that you want them to be.

Welp January has come and gone! How are you doing with your resolutions? (lol same)

Personally I prefer to set smaller monthly goals instead of grande yearly goals for the entire year.

For example! Instead of doing a huge website overhaul once a year, it is so much easier to work with a smaller and more manageable monthly checklist for website updates.

Check out the blog pinned at the top of my website (very very top on the rotating announcement bar) for a simple checklist of monthly maintenance tasks for your website.
You don't even have to do them all! You can do a few this month and a few next month. Whatever works for you.

Some days this is the vibe and that's okay.

My favorite reminder to myself is that growth is not linear. Just because I had a productive day today does not mean tomorrow will be more productive.

The ups and downs are normal and they are a lot easier to manage when we accept these fluctuations. In fact, embracing the low energy days can be more productive than pushing through!

Understanding how you feel and working within your limits is less stressful and more rewarding in the long term.

How do YOU manage when you wake up with no energy and/or motivation?

It's different for everyone but I like to start my day slowly (prioritize a good breakfast and maybe stretch or journal) and then tackle only my most time-sensitive tasks. And then I give myself some grace by either checking out early or working on something that's fun or low stakes.

Hey Grow Gang! There are a few new faces here so I wanted to introduce myself and share a few fun facts for all my friends, old and new.

🧙My name is Renee, and I am your friendly neighbourhood website wizard and small business cheerleader. I have been working with small businesses to grow online since 2018 and I adore working with so many unique types of business and passionate business owners. I live in a small town in BC with my fiance Kodiak and our dog Cayman. We love to explore the Okanagan, go thrifting and take turns picking a movie for Friday night (otherwise we can never agree on what to watch.)

🌻My favourite flower is a sunflower. Not only are they big bright and cheerful, but I have great memories of them in the garden when I was growing up. Specifically, once the stalks were dried up in the fall my sister and I would have 'sword fights' and basically just beat each other with the giant dried stalks lol

👻 I have very rigid boundaries when it comes to work, which means that if you email or message me on a weekend or late at night you won't hear back from me until the next work day. I used to answer emails at 10 pm and rush to my laptop on a Sunday morning if I got a customer request, but I have found over the years that I am more productive, creative and happy when I respect my work hours and myself.

🎙️And, I have a podcast where I interview women in business about their unique stories and relatable experiences (like self doubt, setting boundaries and all the other great things that come along with running a business.) It's a lot of fun and I would be delighted if you came and hung out with us, wherever you listen to podcasts.

January is a great time to refresh your platforms, before the rest of the year sweeps you up.

Not only is it important to ensure that your website is accurate and updated for a positive user experience but as a business that is always growing and changing, it's critical that your website reflects your current accomplishments and developments. Social media is a noisy and crowded place!
You may feel like you're being repetitive and annoying to your followers, but I promise you that you aren't. You can't just plant one seed and hope that every one who follows you will see it. Even if they do see it, they're also scrolling through dozens of other posts at the same time and it can easily get lost in the sea of social media.

Be loud about what you're doing and don't feel embarrassed about making multiple posts and multiple stories to get your messaging across.
