What a week! Between the high winds, the cold, the rain, the snow, the dirty water, the fluctuationing flows and the tough bite it was a fun but trying week on the Illinois River. I traveled with my son Owen Wilcox to help prefish for his first professional National Walleye Tour event as a pro in Spring Valley Illinois and man did we have to keep an open mind as we were fishing a new body of water and a system that we really don’t have anything like near us, as it was a slow moving river with very little structure. Total opposite of the rivers we fish back home. So needless to say having great partners that new the river was a tremendous help. I wouldn’t say our prefish was anything stellar as I think that was the case for most but what we did find was where some bigger fish were holding and those areas are where Owen decided to spend most his time. He knew that meant the bites weren’t going to be plentiful but the bites you did get were solid fish. Day—1 Unfortunately on day one he only got one bite but in typical Owen fashion that bite was a “unicorn”, as the locals call them, as 4+ lbs walleye are not common in this system. Luckily that one BIG bite gave Owen 4.4 lbs for his day one total and kept him within shouting distance of the top half of the leaderboard. Day 2–To Owens credit he made the decision to stick to his big fish spot even with dad trying to pursued him into hitting some other areas where we found higher numbers of smaller males staging for the spawn that we found to be a little more cooperative. Owen instead grinded out a long day of snags and empty passes to a grind out a 5 fish limit of the right fish and finished the day with 9.8 lbs and the 11th best bag of the day which moved him up to a 47th place finish out of 117 pros. All in all it was a successful first NWT event for Owen as we both new this was one where he just needed to survive and accumulate much needed points in the push to qualify for the Championship. Super proud of him and the grit he showed in fighting back day two and proving he can fish with the big boys! I’ll say this… sitting on the shore while your son zooms off is by far one of the most stressful things I’ve ever experienced!!! 1,000x more stressful than any tournament I’ve ever done but also definitely one of the prouder feelings as well! On to Winnebago!!!

After what feels like the longest 2 months of my life, it feels good to finally get back to it.

I know I often promise "due dates" & " upload times" for you guys.... but one thing I've failed to take into consideration is the fact that life will take things away from you to show you just how unhealthy your obsession really is.

Pushing yourself to the edge isn't always the move you should make. It's okay to take a breath of fresh air and see new things.

We all struggle with mental health in different ways. Nobody knows you better than YOU. It's okay to ask for help; it's okay to put a hand out and say I can't do it on my own. Find a support system that works for you.

Your smile Is the most important thing God gave you, use it to make your life & the lives around you better.

Just be you ❤️
