Happy Holidays everyone! After numerous weather/power delays this show is now the full 'Cleveland' so grab your white bucks AND belt!
On this years TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #495) it’s my 11th annual Christmas Special and I’ll begin and end the program with two songs from ANDY PARTRIDGE’S (of XTC) latest EP ‘My Failed Christmas Career (Volume 1).
In between those songs is my unique ‘take’ on holiday music which means you’ll hear Ralph Carney's Happy Solstice’ song, become immersed in the storytelling of DAVID SEDARIS (his tale as a Macy’s elf), become surrounded by the quirky Klezmer sounds of Hanukkah, and hear this year’s pick of THE BEATLES Fan Club Christmas message
Locally, I’ve got songs from THE WAITRESSES (‘Christmas Wrapping’ of course), The HiFis, Glenn Lazear, and Golems of the Red Planet which fit comfortably into the Christmas stockings over the fireplace, plus songs about this weeks excesses like food (NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND, ALBERT COLLINS), the weather (R Stevie Moore, GALAXIE 500, CALEXICO), and religion (JIM WHITE, THE BREAKERS, THE MEKONS).

I jumped up for joy when the latest release from the Mongolian Tuvan folk metal band THE HU finally arrived so as you might suspect, I’ve got to start off this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #494) with a track from it.

The song that I chose from The Hu had a similar chord progression to WILCO’S ‘Born Alone’ so of course I added that cut to the set and followed it with Switzerland’s ALPINE EXPERIENCE, a song to honor the late ANGELO BADALAMENTI, another ‘just arrived’ gem from THE COMET IS COMING, then a HECTOR ZAZOU piece before finishing with RHIANNON GIDDENS & FRANCESCO TURRISI’S unique interpretation of ‘Amazing Grace.’

You’ll hear more new material from TODD RUNDGREN (with Adrian Belew), MAZUR, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, GUIDED BY VOICES, and STEWART COPELAND & RICKY FEJ, ‘vault’ treasures from JADE WARRIOR (‘Monkey Chant’), WIRE, and FOTHERINGAY (with Sandy Denny), plus other goodies from JUANA MOLINA, PHILLIP GLASS (Remixed), RYUICHI SAKAMOTO, and a piece from ASH RA TEMPEL in honor of the passing of founder Manuel Gottsching.

‘The phone books here! The phone books here!’ If you’ve ever seen the movie ‘The Jerk’ then you’ll get the parallels as I jumped up for joy when the latest release from the Mongolian Tuvan folk metal band THE HU finally arrived so as you might suspect, I’ve got to start off this weeks ...

Another week of your life has raced on by (that you can never have back) and in the fast approaching blurry haze there’s a major holiday, new year, and countless trips to ‘scrape off the car’ while contemplating life’s meaning. So why not set it all aside, relax for a couple of hours, and listen to my latest installment of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #493).
There’s more from THE BEATLES new ‘Super Deluxe Edition’ of Revolver to listen to and this time it’s session work on the song ‘Yellow Submarine,’ augmented by an odd ‘cover’ of it by BILL WELLS & AIDAN MOFFAT and a stylish parody from THE RUTLES. I’ve also found the Tuvan throat singing band ALBERT KUVEZIN & YAT-KHA covering a classic by the Iron Butterfly, plus out of the ‘vault’ there’s KEVIN AYERS (with Syd Barrett on guitar), PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE, BRAND X, and NINO ROTA.
More new tracks are played from PIXIES, RICKY KEJ & STUART COPELAND, GUIDED BY VOICES, and BETH ORTON. Internationally I’ve got Zimbabwe’s BHUNDU BOYS, Morocco's LEMCHAHEB, Nigeria’s MAMANE BARKA, and Canada’s LE VENT DU NORD all flying their flags and PATTI SMITH, CHICK COREA, and THE FLAMING LIPS to round things out.

It’s that time again! Another week of your life has raced on by (and you’ll never get it back) and in the fast approaching blurry haze there’s a major holiday, new year, and countless trips to ‘scrape off the car’ while contemplating life’s meaning. So why not set it all aside, relax for...

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of several new additions to my ever evolving musical library so on the latest edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #492) I’ll incorporate them into the first hour of the shows program.
From THE BEATLES new ‘Super Deluxe Edition’ of Revolver I’ll begin the show with the very first ‘take’ of ‘Tomorrow Never Knows.’ Following that I’ve got ‘Mo’ed,’ the new track from GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET who continues it’s mind-blowing quest to interpret John Zorn’s ‘Masada’ songbook. Next up is an ethereal melody from STUART COPELAND & RICKY KEJ, a ‘vault’ classic from CARAVAN, then more new material from Java’s SAMBASUNMDA QUINTET, SURYA BOTOFASINA, and finally returning to The Beatles with the new stereo mix of TNK.
During the second set, I’ve got CHRIS BUTLER’S latest piece ‘I Promise, But…’ surrounded with new music from GUIDED BY VOICES, PIXIES, GUERRILLA TOSS, and ADRIAN BELEW. Then, in the final hour you’ll hear more new music from GERALD CASALE and BIG THIEF, plus other great cuts from DEERHOOF (covering Velvet Underground and Laurie Anderson), PETER HAMMILL, CAN, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, and SWOLLEN MONKEYS.

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of several new additions to my ever evolving musical library and this week, lo and behold, their finally here! It's finally here!
By the time Friday afternoon rolls around, you’ll have been ‘stuffed’ for the past 24 hours (just like Thursday’s main course) so right about now it’s time to digest the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #491) with two hours worth of great music, interesting sets, and a twist and turn (or two) that’ll bring your brain back from that tryptophan induced stupor you’ve been stuck in.
Let’s just pick up where we left off last week and get this show started with another track from ANDY PARTRIDGE’S ‘My Failed Christmas Career Vol. 1’ EP, then throw in some GODLEY & CREME, a sprig of HENRY MANCINI, a dash of JIM WHITE, and the plop plop, fizz, fizz of DAEVID ALLEN, THE MUFFINS, and TOM WAITS. Sometimes, music is the best ‘bromo’ you can grab from your medicine cabinet.
There’s a tasty new morsel from DEVO’S GERALD CASALE, a rare new reissue from STEREOLAB with NURSE WITH WOUND and a variety of other new treats from TODD RUNDGREN, PIXIES, BRIAN ENO, and MELODY’S ECHO CHAMBER. Add to all that a sumptuous selection of ‘vault’ goodies from ANNETTE PEACOCK, JIM PEPPER, NICK DRAKE, and a seldom heard instrumental track from THE BEATLES ‘Help’ soundtrack and several pieces that’ll hark back to your childhood, sitting in front of the TV on a Saturday morning in your p.j.’s with a bowl of cereal. And that’s only half of it. See you this weekend!

On this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #490) I’ve got another entertaining two hours assembled for you with more new tracks, vintage ‘vault’ cuts, a seasonal song or two, and several surprises that ‘ll warm up these cold days ahead.
We’ll start with the latest from the PIXIES, followed by an early BECK song, then THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, the obscure Texas band MALLARD, San Francisco’s MAD RIVER, and a solo cut from former Bonzo, VIVIAN STANSHALL.
Next up it’s another gem from TODD RUNDGREN’S latest (this time accompanied by SPARKS), then a birthday greeting to WENDY CARLOS, an homage to Hawkwind’s NIK TURNER on his passing, and RICKIE LEE JONES covers ‘The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys.’
Suddenly we’ve arrived at the second hour where the JAMES GANG, THE BREEDERS, and THE BLACK KEYS all get together (just like they did in concert last week), before things get a bit quirky with LES CLAYPOOL’S DUO DU TWANG, LEON REDBONE, THE RESIDENTS, KEN NORDINE, and TINY ALICE.
It all ends up with ANDY PARTRIDGE singing a winter melody from his latest EP (My Failed Christmas Career, Vol. 1) after another eclectic set.

More new pieces from BETH ORTON, MELODY’S ECHO CHAMBER, SZUN WAVES, and DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE are added to that bubbling musical cauldron in the second set before serving up a hot set with wine, soup, and other food themes using songs from the PIXIES, FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE, GRAHAM PARKER, ROBERT WYATT, RUPERT HINE, and TAJ MAHAL and the COODERS in the third.
That leaves one set to go and I’ll give you a couple of hints as what you’ll hear there: BRIAN ENO (from the new one), PERE UBU, and STEREOLAB. Hungry? There’s plenty here to satisfy your musical appetite.

It’s a HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL weekend on this year’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES as I’ve got, not one, not two, but THREE different shows over the three day weekend for your listening pleasure.
It begins today with the resurrection of The 2013 HALLOWEEN SPECIAL (Edition #2) which originally aired on October 25, 2013 over SFCR/KUSF-In-Exile. Show notes are below:

It’s that time of year again dear FIENDS....er...I mean Friends. Time to grab the shovel, a rusty pick axe from the shed, mama’s favorite carving knife, 30 feet of bailing wire, a roll of duck tape, and lubricate the chain saw for some fall “trimmings.”
Now invite over that bothersome family member; you know, the one that’s always nagging you about “this and that,” and sit back and enjoy the 2013 HALLOWEEN SPECIAL.

We’ll begin the festivities with scenes from the horror classic “Motel Hell” and intersperse it with “pieces” of music from PINK FLOYD, DANIEL KNOX, PORK TORNADO, and THE BOBS before sauntering over to that haunted “House on the Hill,” and taking a “short-lived” shower while listening to BERNARD HERMANN’S score from “Psycho.” Gives you goose bumps just thinking about it, doesn’t it?
Later on we’ll force “old blabber mouth” to listen to music inspired by “Night of the Living Dead” (and dialogue too!), be attacked by “Blood Sucking Monkey’s from West Mifflin, Pennsylvania” (courtesy of SCTV’s Count Floyd), before turning into a Werewolf with songs by HAWKWIND, THE FRANATIC’S, and FRANK ZAPPA to help in the transformation.
And what about that annoying family member? Well you’ve got over half the show left by now so why not make sure the bindings made with that bailing wire are really tight and that cool lime green duck tape is securely slapped over the “pie hole.” Now where did you put that large plastic “drop cloth?” Things could get really messy ya know.

Transmusic Airwaves Presents (From The Vault) The 2013 Halloween Special (Episode #36) which aired on October 25, 2013 over SFCR/KUSF-In-Exile. NEW PROGRAM LENGTH BEGINS THIS WEEK!

After over a decade, this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #486) will mark a significant change in the length of the program, as I’ve decided to reduce it by an hour so I can continue to bring you great ‘freeform’ podcasts because as I get older, it’s become more difficult to make these programs up to my own high standards for the full three hours.
You’ll still get everything you expect from me, with new releases, nuggets from the ‘vault,’ and assorted genres ranging from world music to spoken word all blended into thirty minute sets (just four of them from now on).
For new releases this week I’ve got BRIAN ENO, THE MARS VOLTA, BETH ORTON, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, SZUN WAVES, JULIAN LAGE, PORCUPINE TREE, ADRIAN BELEW, BIG THIEF, BEIRUT, and more from the Tuvan folk metal band THE HU.
From the ‘vault’ there’s CAN, XTC, KEVIN AYERS, AUDIENCE, and PAUL KANTNER with GRACE SLICK, and DAVID FRIEBERG, folk styling’s from JOHN HARTFORD, LEO KOTTKE, and Hungary’s VIZONTO, plus other great tracks from THE MEKONS, PERE UBU, and MICHAEL BROOK.

On this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES I’ve decided to revisit my early programming from the past and make available a program from June 1, 2012 that was heard over the internet radio station KUSF-In-Exile in San Francisco.
The program at the time was called Vicotin Popsicle’s and it’s ‘freeform’ concept was beginning to jell into what it would later as Transmusic Airwaves.
On this edition there’s music from BRIAN ENO, THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION, JACK WHITE, D’GARY, MODEST MOUSE, and GLENN GOULD plays a movement from Bach’s ‘Goldberg Variations.’ The final set centers around the telephone theme with pieces from URBAN VERBS, KALI BALHU, LOVE, LADY JUNE, and JAMES WHITE & THE BLACKS.

It’s time for another weekly TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #485) as we head straight on into October’s second week with shorter days, cooler nights, and fall festivities all settling into place. I’ve got a great program to compliment everything as well.
In the new release category I’ve added DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, SZUN WAVES, NEIL YOUNG (live at Royce Hall 1971), JULIAN LAGE (with Bill Frisell), and PORCUPINE TREE to the current list with ADRIAN BELEW, BIG THIEF, GLENN LAZEAR, and LIBRARIANS WITH HICKEYS already on it.
From the ‘vault’ there’s PETER GABRIEL, RICHARD THOMPSON, HUGH HOPPER, ULTIMATE SPINACH, and everyone’s favorite, TIN HUEY, intermixed with the new pieces. There’s oddly intriguing tracks from MOONDOG, SHPONGLE and NEGATIVLAND, plus international items from JUSTIN ADAMS & JULDEN CAMARA, Sudan’s ABDEL GADIR SALIM, and ZULYA KAMALOVA (Tarter/Tasmania). Just get yourself a beverage, something to snack on, and plug the show in between all your other activities for added enjoyment!

As we begin the first week of fall I’ve planned another great three hours of music on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #483) to help you settle in for cooler weather, changing colors, and translucent skies.

I’ll start off with the BONZO DOG BAND’S ‘Intro And Outro,’ then follow it with new tracks from ADRIAN BELEW, BEIRUT, BIG THIEF, and THE SPACE LADY who’s rendition of ‘Fly Like An Eagle’ is, on it’s own, worth tuning in for.

A rarely heard version of VINCE GUARALDI’S ‘Linus And Lucy’ from ‘It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ starts the next set, with an eclectic mix of music from THE GERMS, DUNGEN, JOE RAINY, and WOOD AND FIRE (Yunnan Acid Folk) moving the music along

By the fourth set it’s time for that ‘vault’ masterpiece as I’ll present PINK FLOYD’S ‘Echoes’ and have pieces from HENRY COW and THOM YORKE immersed into it in honor of Nick Mason’s upcoming show at the Akron Civic Theater.
There’s a whole slew of new stuff as well from the likes of MANSUR, GLENN LAZEAR, LIBRARIANS WITH HICKEY'S, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, T-BONE BURNETT & FRIENDS, and CHRISSIE HYNDE (covering Dylan).

You know you’re getting older by the day when you get so involved in one project that you completely forget a weekly task that involves writing up the program description for this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #482). Here’s what’s planned on this show.

During today’s first set, I’ve got the amazing new T-BONE BURNETT project, ‘The Invisible Light: Spells’ (with JAY BELLEROSE & KEEFER CIANCIA) to get things started then follow it with THE SLITS, THE ROLLING STONES (doing Gomper’), acknowledge the passing of jazz great RAMSEY LEWIS with his interpretation of The Beatles ‘Blackbird,’ then follow that with the latest from MANSUR (Netherland mystic electronica) and finish the set with GLENN LAZEAR’S latest.

The second set combines SIGUR ROS with WAS (NOT WAS), ANGELO BADALAMENTI, and two version’s of John Zorn’s ‘Hutriel,’ one from GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET and the other from BANQUET OF THE STARS, plus another new track from THE MOUNTAIN GOATS.
I'll devote the fourth set to some of my favorite compositions of ‘world music’ from such artists as GEOFFREY ORYEMA, MORY KANTE, BASSEKOU KOUYATE & NGONI BA, D’GARY, and TELEK.
Add to that more new tracks from THOM YORKE, OUTRONAUT, and ADRIAN BELEW, local works by THE NEPTUNE'S, and ROBERT WHEELER & ALLEN RAVENSTINE and vault goodies too!

There’s plenty to crow about on this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #481) with local artists GLENN LAZEAR , THE BLACK KEYS, (both from their new releases), CHRIS BUTLER, 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND), and DAVID THOMAS & TWO PALE BOYS all incorporated into a different set today and surrounded by a diverse selection of other artists they’d probably enjoy actually hanging out with.

The Black Keys get comfy with FAIRPORT CONVENTION and another new track from THE MOUNTAIN GOATS. Chris Butler gets to chill with FRANK ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS (from ‘Overnight Sensation’) and EUGENE CHADBOURNE,

Glenn Lazear gets chummy with THE BEATLES and XTC (who wouldn’t if given the chance), 15-60-75 (The Numbers Band) holds their own with GILLI SMYTH and JOHN CALE, and David Thomas & Two Pale Boys raises a ruckus with CRACKER and NICK DRAKE.
A little birdie told me there’s more new DAVID BOWIE, OUTRONAUT, and DEERHOOF (from the Yoko Ono tribute album), plus pieces from FUTURE ISLANDS, PETER BLEGVAD, and THE FIXX. I’ve even got the Chinese folk metal band, MOQUI.

There’s plenty to crow about on this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #481) with local artists GLENN LAZEAR , THE BLACK KEYS, (both from their new releases), CHRIS BUTLER, 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND), and DAVID THOMAS & TWO PALE BOYS all incorporated into a different set today and surroun...

This week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES I’ve decided to celebrate over 45 years of radio with three separate archive gems from my days at WKSU-FM and it’s legendary late night progressive radio program Fresh Air which I was a weekly host on from 1976-1981.

The first is a one hour segment captured on August 22, 1977 of an early version of the program’s ‘Artist Of The Week’ feature focusing on the band GENTLE GIANT. This is the oldest recording of any of my shows at WKSU.

The remaining two and a half hours contain two more shows, the second hour is from March 31, 1980 of what was the “Domestic Album Premiere’ of the band D’OA as well as the programming prior to the feature and a final hour and a half segment contains a program segment from one of my final recorded broadcasts on ‘Fresh Air,’ before my graduation from KSU and subsequent move to Chicago that fall.

It’s been one of those weeks where I’ve really struggled to assemble music but the good news is that I’ve figured out things over the last couple of days and as a result, this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #479) looks to be quite an enjoyable listen.
I’ve got plenty of ‘vault’ gems from the likes of KEVIN AYERS, ROBERT FRIPP & THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, THE ROCHES (now there’s a name you haven’t heard in ages), FERMATA (Slovakian 70’s Prog), FLASH AND THE PAN, and THE DOORS, ‘covers’ from PATTI SMITH (The Beatles) and THE FLYING LIZARDS (‘What’s New Pussycat’), and a rarity from Akron’s own TIN HUEY (‘Larry’s In The Cutout Bin’).
There’s more new tracks from DAVID BOWIE, OUTRONAUT, THE SMILE, and STEPHEN MERRITT, worldly music from Romania’s SHUKAR COLLECTIVE, Finland’s MILLA VILJAMAA, and Argentina’s JUANA MOLINA, and other great selections from WILCO, FIONA APPLE, XTC, JON HASSELL, and MATERIAL.
Now that I’ve given you a glimpse of what’s in store, Go ahead and give it a listen!

On this extra special 'rewind' edition of Transmusic Airwaves I'm extracting from my archives the long hidden very first 'Character Study,' that of legendary artist Kevin Ayers, which debuted on Episode #3 on March 8, 2013, three weeks after his passing. In today’s premiere, a look at the life and music of legendary songwriter KEVIN AYERS. Ayers who was a cornerstone in the British Psychedelic movement, it’s progressive offshoot, “The Canterbury Scene,” and a gifted modern troubadour, who passed away on February 18, 2013.

Each week as I prepare to get going on another upcoming show, a new release, movie or TV show, event, or person can serve as an inspiration to get the creative juices flowing and on this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #475 ) it was the passing of Monty Newman, the composer of perhaps the world’s most recognizable spy movie theme (James Bond) I decided to incorporate that theme with other spy music themes interpreted by a variety of artists during today’s first set.

The program begins with the new offering by THE SMILE (featuring members of Radiohead), then tracks by MODEST MOUSE and SLAPP HAPPY, before transitioning into Bond-like themes from PROPELLERHEADS, BOB CRANE & HIS ORCHESTRA (Get Smart), THE SURF CHAMPLERS (Bond), ORANJ SYMPHONETTE (The Pink Panther), and THE VENTURES (Secret Agent Man). NANCY SINATRA adds her own take on the subject with the song ‘The Last Of The Secret Agents’ along the way.

The diversity of the five other sets is what you’d expect as a regular listener to this broadcast. More new pieces are heard from FLORA PURIM, MARK ALLENDER, and DAMON ALBARN, there’s ‘vault’ material from PETER HAMMILL, THE BEATLES, CAN, and TALKING HEADS, indie rock with MONKS OF DOOM, DENGUE FEVER, and WIRE, plus tracks from WILCO, ANGELO BADALAMENTI, DAVID CUNNINGHAM, ADRIAN BELEW, and JOHN KIRKPATRICK.

Each week as I prepare to get going on another upcoming show, a new release, movie or TV show, event, or person can serve as an inspiration to get the creative juices flowing and on this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #475 ) it was a combination of those elements that played out. Upon learnin...

Our Story

Each week I'll bring varying styles of music (jazz, progressive, classical, alternative, electronica, ect.) including a number of new releases and occasionally intermix them seamlessly with comedy, spoken word, and movie and TV dialogue to form the basis if this program. Once in a while there might be an individual set that will follow a specific theme (ex: space, cars, percussion) as well.
