VaVa Records is an independent record label interested in delivering inventive works and projects through the broad medium of music and art. Beginning in Aberdeen but now based in London, the label was established by A La Fu who as a DJ, artist and producer has worked closely with Big Dada/Ninja Tune labels and has recorded and toured worldwide with artists such as Mike Ladd, Roots Manuva, Coldcu
t and performed at venues and festivals such as Glastonbury, Trans Musicales, Pukkelpop, Fabric, Brixton Academy and New York’s Knitting Factory to name but a few. A La Fu was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and has appeared several times on MTV and other television networks, notably alongside the godfather of hip hop Kool Herc illustrating the art of DJ’ing. He was nominated for and won a new music award from the BBC and returned to London to record a number of meticulously crafted projects, which brings us to VaVa Records first release; the 7” box set by A La Fu entitled ‘Themes’. Although a channel for his own output A La Fu was keen to include some of his favourite, more forward thinking artists such as ex Uncle John & Whitelock members Tut Vu Vu, Jacob Yates & The Pearly Gate Lock Pickers, world famous graff/contemporary artists Remi/Rough and Part 2, new wonder kid Zubuntu and singer songwriter Blackledge Falling. One of the other objectives of the label is to offer new ways to release music, one such series of releases is ‘Sound In Print’ where choice musicians are paired with artists to create a piece of music and artwork respectively. Each release comes as a signed & numbered print of cover artwork designed exclusively by the artist along with a download code to the accompanying piece of music. This series is a response to both the disposable nature of inconsequential thumbnails you might find with standard digital releases and is an aim to offer affordable artwork from established artists. The artist hears the music first then completes the artwork, each release is only available in limited edition runs of up to or less than 99 and both the music and art will not be available to purchase separately nor will they be re-released in the future. VaVa Records have also branched out to live events recently having presented Keith K Hopewell’s new project in the form of a sound installation, exhibiting at London’s Hoxton Gallery as a launch for Keith’s LP.
