Business networking breakfast is back after the summer break!
Last Saturday I visited a science fiction and fantasy convention - FinnCon. The largest and oldest in Finland and this year it happened in the premises of the University of Jyväskylä.
Game characters, movie and book heroes, such a vibrant and creative crowd, with so many awesome colors, costumes, stories, and very interesting characters!
And I love that even the security guard had elf ears :)
I had just a couple of hours to enjoy this event and had to leave, but I managed to get a glimpse into these fictional and exciting worlds!

I found out that my friend has a Van Helsing costume, and a crossbow and is ready to do a photoshoot in conditions far from comfortable!
His character is Van Helsing - a Witch hunter. And the water appears to be under some kind of spell. So he might be in trouble!

This find made my day!
Currently, there are UNESCO world heritage exhibitions at the Aalto2 (combined Alvar Aalto Museum and the Museum of Central Finland). In the exhibition on the 4th floor at the Museum of Central Finland, among other UNESCO sites there is also an exhibit about the Suomenlinna sea fortress. I was very excited to see that the plates are actually from Riga! and the historical weapons are basically the same as were used in Daugavpils Fortress in the early 19th century! For example, the short sword with the saw-like side looks like the ones that were used by the military engineers of that time who started building of Daugavpiuls Fortress in 1810.
It is not surprising when you know the history of the region, but still interesting to see.

More views from autumn in Suomenlinna Fortress. Walking around and exploring the architecture of this Finnish fortress I found some buildings and elements really similar to the architecture of the Daugavpils Fortress in my hometown in Latvia, reminding me of the common history of the region...
A little bit of wooden architecture of the Suomenlinna fortress
Walls of Suomenlinna at the beginning of October. Thanks to my hometown fortress - Daugavpils cietoksnis I acquired a strong interest in historical fortifications, especially bastion-type fortresses. Even though I live now in Finland it is not easy to get from Jyväskylä to Helsinki, but each time I have a chance I hop on the boat to the Suomenlinna / Suomenlinna Sea Fortress to admire the mighty walls of this sea fortress and ask strange questions at the Suomenlinna museum shop and information center... (I definitely should finally write those questions to some historian specializing in the Suomenlinna history and stop terrorizing people at the museum shop with my questions 😅)

- We walked through the Ånderdalen National Park is known for its northern Norwegian nature: primeval coastal forests raised bogs among the mountains and silver (marble) pines – dead trees that lost their bark and whose bare light grey trunks look silvery.
- Enjoyed the views with sharp mountain peaks and fjords of Senja Island, partially covered in clouds and illuminated by the never-ending sunset! Watch the video to better see.
- Climbed with Sisu up to the Barden - just 659m high, but it has incredible views.

For a few years already, I wanted to go beyond the Arctic Circle in summer to experience the neverending polar day. This year we finally made this trip with my girlfriend Ilze and our dog Sisu. This adventure was truly amazing! We saw incredibly beautiful landscapes and experienced midnight sun and during all this time I was the luckiest passenger princess and could fully enjoy every landscape of the trip!
This is just the first couple of days of the trip. More amazing landscapes coming soon...
Exhibition of Alvar Aalto's boat at the Jyväskylä Harbour.
A special shed was constructed this spring to exhibit the wooden boat designed by Alvar Aalto, marking the 125th anniversary of Alvar Aalto’s birth.
My exhibition The Haunting Heritage as well as the group exhibition Lopettakaa (Stop It) will be on display at Kuusisto Art Manor until the 10th of September. Keep in mind that on Thursdays and Fridays the Art Manor is closed.
The Haunting Heritage exhibition is now open!
I was a little bit worried if the public will be interested enough in the exhibition, to go out of the manor comfortably accessible first floor and crawl down uneven stairs to the chilly basement, but I am happy to say that visitors did like it!
I want to thank the Embassy of Latvia in Helsinki for supporting my exhibition and the members of the Latvian diaspora (especially my former professor Andris Andrusaitis) in Finland who helped to bring photos and various objects for the exhibition from Latvia. Thanks to Latvian urban explorer Vlad Senkan who provided me with authentic Soviet gasmask. Thanks to Kristaps Sokolovskis for helping with assembly of the exhibition and providing me with a place to stay. Thanks to Ilze Brila who took photos during the opening of the exhibition. And huge thanks to Merja Markkula of Kuusiston Taidekartano who I accidentally met in the Suomenlinna fortress last november and who instantly became interested in my exhibition and made it all possible.

The Haunting Heritage - opening of my exhibition on the 11th of August at 17:00, at Kuusisto Art Manor (Kuusiston Taidekartano), near Turku.
The full-scale war in Ukraine initially shocked everyone and initiated many discussions in European countries on how exactly to react to it, but few countries (Baltic states among them) had an immediate and very firm stance on how much support must be provided to Ukraine. It is not surprising, given that Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have experienced Soviet occupation in full.
In “The Haunting Heritage” I use my old photos taken in 2009-2014 to illustrate the Soviet heritage that still surrounded Latvians 20 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain and restoration of independence and how 30 years later it echoes current conflict and geopolitics.
The exhibition will be on display at Kuusisto Art Manor, from the 12th of August till the 10th of September.
