Wyeth, Oregon

Such a beautiful day on Monday with . Watched the sun set in this gorgeous glade outside of Cascade Locks, followed by Tecos tacos and a campfire. Perfect way to center and focus before the Full Moon.

Voidcaller (2024)

Saw so, so many horror movies i loved this weekend at Popcorn Frights. Voidcaller was a favorite, an artful arthouse b&w Cosmic Horror that deals with sound, deep space, and The Great Old Ones. Keep an eye out for it.

The Wheel Of Heaven (2023)

The Wheel of Heaven is an utterly bizarre, surreal, funny, unexpectedly moving anthology-style arthouse horror that's presented like a Choose Your Own Adventure novel. A highlight from this year's festival.

In honor of my sober anniversary today, i wrote about my music journalism origin story, getting sober, moving to Boulder, living in a van, hanging out w my first Millennial friends, starting my first music blog at Folsom Street Coffee Co as part of the blogosphere rush and discovering Critical Theory. Outlining the scope of the project and detailing the connection between memoir, philosophy, and sociology.

This week's 5x5:

- A few more entries into my Best Albums of the 80s project. That Cecil Taylor ended up being rather enjoyable despite being VERY abstract. Atonal without becoming abrasive, which is hard to pull off.

Enjoyed that Mercyful Fate. Theyve grown on me quite a bit.

Not a huge fan of that Sabbat record, though.

- Couple more Merzbow albums for the collection.

- Been mulling over the new Ci******es After S*x, which is nice to listen to, on one hand, and rather vapid, on the other. Music for Xanax milkshakes.

- new Clairo is probably my album of the month.

- Couple new techno and IDM records. Been loving the new Muziq, even if it is a bit frivolous.

- Orange Goblin is kind of a 60/40 split. It sounds good and is often a lot of fun, but the lyrics border on agitprop a lot of the time, too on-the-nose and obvious to be ultimately effective.

What have you been listening to this week?

Shelley Duvall (7.7.49 - 7.11.24)

Terribly saddened by the news of the passing of Shelley Duvall. Her performances in Robert Altman's movies are some of my favorites.

Here's a shot of her with Sissy Spacek from 3 Women, a particular favorite that i reviewed last year.
