Now in 2025, particularly after the state’s three-year permit renewal of the controversial S.A. Dunn landfill that sits atop Rensselaer’s landscape, city officials no longer want to be known for industry.

“I want to become an environmentally sound city. I want to be the front yard of Albany not the backyard,” Mayor Michael Stammel said.

Rensselaer officials envision a future of new residences and jobs that puts environmental harm away in the past.
