Piloting Your Life Piloting Your Life is a podcast and a book. It's by a woman and for women. Take the controls and be the pilot in your own life.

Claim and pilot to power to change the world In each episode of this podcast, helicopter pilot and investor Terri Mead interviews people who chose not to be victims of their circumstances and relied on their internal fortitude to chart their own courses. The goal is to provide inspiration for those struggling to overcome, amongst other things, sexism, racism, socio-economic, cultural and educational challenges that may or may not have been of their own doing, to be the pilots in their own lives.

I think I've made what I do look way too easy, but in reality, it's really hard.

If I don't create opportunities for myself, no one else will. I have to work to remain relevant and marketable to support our family.

I have no mentors. In fact, I have more people throwing up obstacles than trying to break them down for me.

I want to surround myself with people who say F**k Yeah! when I take something on and look for ways to support me.

In 2023, I'm narrowing my focus and hope to capitalize on all the work I've done to date. This includes limiting who I spend time with and who I give my time to.

I want to do it all with greater ease.

Anyone else stressed about the news and the state of the US and the rest of the world?

Anyone breathe some sighs of relief with some of the news this past week? Georgia runoff. Brittney Griner release. Trump org jury verdicts?

All of this got me thinking about how I operate in the world and what I am looking forward to in 2023. More in this week's PYL In-Flight.

Empty nesters unite! Finn left for UVM in Vermont almost four months ago and we've officially been empty nesters ever since. We got off to a rough start (correction: I got off to a rough start) but it's been pretty amazing overall.

As Zeke says in the video: it's awesome!

More in this week's video.

Zeke is now editing my videos and is my new not-so-trusty sidekick off camera. I am hoping he gets chattier as we do more of these. Let us know if you want more of Zeke's commentary...he needs some external encouragement.

Terri and her husband Zeke have survived the first semester of being empty nesters. How did they do it and what's working for them? 00:00: Topic: Empty Nest...

Do you look at pictures of holidays past with fondness or with grief? Or some other emotion?

What are some of your favorite memories?

My cousin Casey is in town for the weekend and we've been talking about holidays when we were kids. It prompted me to think about how holidays have evolved for us and how we are creating new experiences and traditions.

More on this and lots of pictures in this week's PYL In-Flight.

I seem to be eternally in transition. Right now we are continuing to adjust to life with kids away at college, but then coming back, and then leaving again.
Always in a state of flux.

Holidays can be fun and challenging. Having kids home from college introduces an entirely different set of opportunities and challenges.

And then there are traditions. Are they important to you? Are you the one to maintain them?

How do you make sure your needs are met during the holidays?

Check out some of my thoughts in this week's PYL In-Flight. There's a lot to unpack...and we aren't even traveling.

I’ve never considered myself a patient person. I am a woman of action and patience requires waiting, often waiting for other people and other things which are outside of my control.

Sometimes patience provides opportunity for clarity.

Waiting (too patiently) for perfection means we may miss out on the opportunity.

Sometimes action is the only thing that will create the opportunity.

Where does anticipation fit into all of this?

My friend Christy Nichols wrote a fantastic travel memoir called Soul Shaping Tails that has me planning my next adventure. Her definition of adventure is definitely more spontaneous and less planned than mine but no less inspiring.

Christy shares, in glorious detail, what started it all for her in terms of travel and adventure. She takes the reader along for the ride in such a way that you can imagine being there with her but without enduring some of the painful and less glamorous parts.

More of my thoughts on the book and recommended reflection prompts in my blog.

You might recall that I went to Nicaragua last year with my youngest child Finn and left Finn with my friend Christy who is an American ex-pat living in Nica. This is that same Christy.

I was sent an advance reader’s copy (ARC) of Jacqueline in Paris by Ann Mah and I really enjoyed this book.

I love all things France which is what intrigued me at first but then the story of Jacqueline Bouvier (before she became Jacqueline Kennedy) captured my attention.

The book (historical fiction) covers ‘Jacqueline Bouvier’s college year abroad in postwar Paris.’ She was so naive at the beginning of the year; it was fascinating to witness her transformation as she claimed her life as her own, to the extent that she could.

More on my thoughts on the book and some reflection prompts in my blog post.

As many people know, I am a sucker for all things French. I also love historical fiction so Jacqueline in Paris was right up my alley.

Working through the pile of books I've been meaning to read including The NarrowRoad by Dr. Pamela Jolly.

I met Pamela Jolly a few years ago at a women founders’ event and as we walked to dinner after the event, I got to wondering why I was the speaker and not her. Later, when she released her podcast The Jolly Journey I continued to be impressed by her knowledge and perspective. When I saw that she’d released her book, I couldn’t wait to read it not realizing it’s the second edition (first edition was released in 2015).

In this book, she shares an impressive amount of research and accumulated knowledge around wealth and her NarrowRoad framework. As one of her reviewers/readers says, the NarrowRoad journey gives the reader ‘the feeling of agency’ and provides a ‘comprehensive approach to defining wealth.’ I agree.

She definies wealth as ‘a well balanced portfolio of assets that includes human, intellectual, social, cultural, and spiritual capital’ and goes on to explain what each of these are and how we can use them to reach our wealth objectives.

This book is not just educational; it provides thought-provoking questions and tools for understanding your goals, your NarrowRoad ID, roadblocks on your wealth journey, and how to move toward your wealth goals. It’s as much a workbook as it is a textbook.

Some of the questions / prompts are easy and others require some internal soul searching. This is both an easy read and a hard read as a result but definitely worth it.

Check out my blog post for some journaling/thought prompts around defining and pursuing wealth.

The book is available on Amazon.

Nothing like a current crisis to drive my PYL In-Flight writing for the week.

How are you doing? Got everything under control? Do you have a manageable To Do list? Are you reaching your goals? If so, how do you do it?

I have so many things going on that I don’t know were to start. Frankly, it’s overwhelming.

I’m frittering away my day with small, semi-important tasks and am not moving any of my big projects forward.

I've been seriously unmotivated and pretty miserable the last few weeks as I've adjusted to being alone in the house with only George to keep me company.

rolled off a client project last week and finally have time to catch up on some writing including my latest PYL In-Flight to follow Puppies Make Everything Better.

Zeke absolutely did not want another dog, let alone a puppy.
I decided I didn't want to live in a house without a dog. But wasn't sure about a puppy.

How did we get to adopting Good Boy George and not ruining our beautiful new relationship?

You'll have to read my blog post to find out.

(Possible) spoiler alert: he left for a 2-week cycling trip with three of his buddies.
