SH1 URBAN MWY – MAINTENANCE - UPDATE 10AM, WED 26 JUN

Due to unforeseen conditions, these works have been RESCHEDULED.

Crews will be CLOSING Aotea Quay off-ramp on Sunday 30 June, 11pm-1am for maintenance works.

Alternative routes for CBD-bound travel will be available via Hutt Rd or via the Murphy St off-ramp.
------

Plan ahead for an OVERNIGHT CLOSURE of the Aotea Quay off-ramp on Thursday 27 June, between 11pm and 1am for maintenance works.

Alternative routes for CBD-bound travel will be available via Hutt Rd or via the Murphy St off-ramp.

The closure is needed to allow urgent resurfacing work in an area where a pothole is forming. Because the off-ramp is a single lane, it must be closed while repairs are completed.

These works are dependent on fine weather. In the event of postponement, an update will be provided in the comment section below.

An update on our work at State Highway 2/Hebden Crescent in Lower Hutt: From Sunday evening 9 June (weather dependent) we’ll be temporarily closing the State Highway 2 intersection near Liverton Road for six weeks to allow for construction (as pictured below).

We need to close this intersection so we can widen the left turn lane into Hebden Crescent, as well as complete drainage works, install line marking and signage, and pave the road for the new intersection layout.

This means there’s no access in or out of this intersection. While the intersection is temporarily closed, if you’re wanting to turn left into Hebden Crescent, you can use the Hebden Crescent intersection near Owen Street (opposite Belmont Domain). To exit Hebden Crescent and travel south, you'll need to turn around at the SH2/SH58 interchange.

Because the work depends on good weather, the timings of construction may change. Changes will be displayed on electronic messaging signs near the intersection and published on our website: https://nzta.govt.nz/sh2-hutt-valley-intersections

Here’s a look at the revised concept design for the Melling intersection on State Highway 2 in Lower Hutt.

We’ll be building an interchange with an overbridge for people travelling between the city centre and the Western Hills, which means there’ll no longer be traffic lights on SH2. This’ll improve your travel times, and it also makes the state highway a lot safer. There’ll be new on and off-ramps on the state highway in both directions making it easier to access Lower Hutt or the Western Hills.

For people walking and cycling, there’ll be new and improved paths. With this design you’ll only have to cross one set of traffic lights when you’re going between the city centre and the Western Hills (instead of three sets of traffic lights in the previous design).

Taking time now to revise the original design has been invaluable for the project, and is useful in finding opportunities to improve value for money and deliver the best outcomes for Lower Hutt.

We expect construction to start early next year. Visit our website to find out more about the improvements at Melling: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/melling-transport-improvements/

Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi Alliance (AECOM New Zealand and Fletcher Construction) is working with us, mana whenua Taranaki Whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika (Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust) and Ngāti Toa Rangatira (Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira), and our council programme partners to deliver the Melling interchange and other transport improvements.
