I told Ivan he'd be illustrating the super-secret, special edition, alternate cover that could only be unlocked after reaching a certain amount on the campaign for our stretch-goal backers, and he really knocked it out of the park.

Don't get me wrong. I love our regular-edition cover that Albert did too. But this cover is just a chef's kiss.

We were really trying to make the hotel itself feel like a character, and I wanted something that leaned into the horror and dark-humor aspect, since the regular cover is lighthearted and in a comic style.

This cover says, yes, we have Bram-Stoker-Award nominated, or winning, horror authors in here, and it will sometimes be dark, and creepy, but still just mad fun.

Yet another author Frog and I have been long-time fans of, it's always an honor to publish Irene Radford. If you're worried a Cthulhu anthology won't have anything for you, she has written a wonderfully humorous story about an old god trailing after a mermaid, only to find himself out of his depth and up to his gills in all the hubbub at a human con. Olivia Baxter Hudson is an author that I know from way back at EWU-- She and I met when I was a squeaky-new 18-year-old, and she was only slightly older than me. Not only is she a superb author and friend, but she's managed to put up with me and Frog for all these years with out going 'round the bend-- at least until now. She wrote a truly macabre tale of a convention from the four-legged perspective. I'm honestly not sure what else to tell you without spoilers...

We are in the final countdown of this Kickstarter, and I find myself in an interesting place.

If the Kickstarter were to end, right now, at the $5,432 it's at...Impulsive Walrus Books would do financially pretty well from it.

If we get to $6,000, we will actually make less than we would if it ended today.

That's because we've started to collect enough money to pay our authors pro-rate, but the moment that KS hits $6,000 we go from paying all but a select few of our authors .03 a word to paying for every story at the SFWA pro rate of .08 a word.

So I am now in the position of advocating and pushing a Kickstarter to my own financial detriment. And you know what? I'm still going to do it. Because IW Books was never about the profit--the profit just lets us make the next book. IW Books is about bringing quality books to the market again. And doing that means getting a reputation for paying the authors.

So if ever you've wanted to stick it to a publisher, now is the time. If ever you've wanted to see more of your money go to supporting the creatives behind the industry, now's the time. Because as soon as this Kickstarter raises another $578.00, that's exactly what is going to happen.

Impulsive Walrus Books LLC is a small speculative fiction press located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. We specialize in cutting edge, easy to pick up and hard to put down science fiction and fantasy titles. The press is a creation of the author-duo Frog and Esther Jones. Esther Jones, owner of Impulsive Walrus, runs the publishing side of the press while Frog Jones is the acquisitions editor and manages the editing side.
