Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
Job 7:11

It is better to be honest with God in our prayers than to be hypocritical. We should always be reverent, but we pray with the knowledge that he already knows and sees our hearts. We cannot hide anything from him, so why would we not tell him "our complaint" as did Job? If we feel anguish or bitterness, better to admit it to God and to seek his power to change us than to try to hide it from him.

O seer of our hearts, you know our thoughts before we think them, our words before we say them. Nothing can be hid from your sight, but all things are naked and bare before you. I will not seek to hide any bitterness, anger, sorrow, worry, or anything else from you but will admit it to you and seek you to help me change.

Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways. For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.
Proverbs 3:31-32

Why would one envy an oppressor? Why would one be tempted to follow his ways? Is it not because of the ungodly gain that wicked men often make for themselves? They seem to "get away with it" and live like kings while the meek and godly live like paupers. But the secret blessings of the heart are with the righteous, while the oppressive are an abomination to Him.

Lord, let us not envy evil doers for the worldly gain they may secure to themselves. It will all be left behind them when they enter the grave. And they do not enjoy the spiritual blessings during their lives that you give to your people. Help us to focus on you and on the things that matter most in this life and in eternity.

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
Acts 3:19-20

A time of refeshing is coming from the Lord. It was prophesied long ago by God's prophets. It will come upon all the earth when the Kingdom of God appears, first for a thousand years and then on into eternity with a New Heaven and New Earth. The Jews were not wrong to expect an earthly Kingdom, for it had been promised to them, but they forgot about the spiritual nature of the Kingdom. They supposed that entrance into it could be based on being physical sons of Abraham. Instead, repentance is required to enter the Kingdom of God.

Lord Jesus, we wait for the coming of your glorious Kingdom to earth, for the time when all of the kingdoms of this world will become the Kingdom of Christ. Your rule will be perfectly righteous, and you will rule with a rod of iron and dash evil doers to pieces like a potter's vessel (Psalm 2). But even now, rule and reign in our hearts. Help us repent of our sins and turn to you in a true and living faith. Amen.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Genesis 1:27

God created both male and female in his image. From the beginning, he made both man and woman and caused them to fellowship with him and with each other in the garden. And God gave Eve to Adam to be his wife, and this was for a picture of the Church, the bride of Christ, whom the Father would give to the Son.

# Prayer
O Lord, we know you have created men and women both in your image and for your glory. You have given them each their proper strengths and roles. Some you call to serve you as singles, and devote fuller time to your kingdom. Others you call to marriage, and this is a picture of your love for your Church. May we all be content with the calling you have called us with.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17

Here we are told that a Christian, one truly "in Christ, " is a new creature or new "creation" of God. The old life is gone; the new life in Christ has come. And even as God needed no help from us in creating the physical world, he alone brings into being that new state of grace called being in Christ.

Lord, help us to live ever more like the new creatures we are in your Son, Jesus Christ. Being in Christ, we draw our spiritual life from him, but the old nature still causes us to stumble. Prospectively, the old things are as good as gone, but practically, remnants of the old remain, though they are passing away. Sanctify us today with your truth and bring your new creations that much closer to completion.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:13-14

It was the truth concerning Jesus Christ in the Gospel, God's Word, that came to us by God's providence at some point in the past. And when we believed that Word, we were saved from the guilt of all our sins and given the Holy Spirit whom Christ had promised to send to his people. The Spirit's presence in us is a "down payment" (earnest) of the full and final salvation to come at the time of resurrection of the saints.

Seeing the work of the Spirit in our hearts and lives, O Lord, we know that our conversion was real and that you have yet more blessings in store for us in the future. Help us to patiently wait for that day when our salvation from sin's power and from even physical death is complete. Let us work while we wait and be found diligent servants of you at your coming.

And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.
Micah 4:5

The day is coming when the Messiah will "be great to the ends of the earth. " He will reign on the earth and take all the kingdoms of this world as his own possession. He will establish justice and rule in might. Today, there is much injustice in the world, and governments are often corrupt. In that day, however, we will see the perfect righteous rule of Jesus Christ.

O Lord, we look expectantly to the time of your Millennial and then Eternal reign. This age is passing us by, and its injustice will not long endure. We are glad to endure suffering for your glory now, but we rejoice in hope of the Kingdom of God that is yet to come. Let this future hope motivate us, we pray, to holy living in the present.

Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Titus 2:13

As Christians, we long for the day we will meet our Savior face to face. We cling to the promise that our Lord will reappear and we will spend eternity worshipping him. Even on our toughest days, we hold to this blessed hope. When the world feels dark and troubling, we know this is just our temporary home. Our home is with our savior, Jesus Christ. It is this blessed hope that keeps us pressing onward and sharing this hope with the rest of the world.

Dear God, there are many days when I am reminded that this fallen world is not my home – my home is with you for eternity! When the weight of the world begins to overwhelm me, help me to cling to that blessed hope. You are returning! No one else in history has been resurrected and no one else in history will return to Earth except for you, O Lord. Hallelujah! It is this knowledge that gives me hope to press on and help others find hope in you. In Jesus' name, amen.

And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
Mark 4:24-25

On other occasions, Jesus used this phrase "with what measure you measure it shall be measured to you" to mean we should not judge others falsely or treat others over-harshly and expect that not to come back on our own heads. But here, he seems to use this phrase to mean: listen diligently because the more attentive and eager you are to learn, the more you measure to yourself of God's Word that you hear, the more you will abound in it.

Teach us to be good listeners when we read or hear you Word, Lord. Let us not take it for granted or treat it as an unimportant, common thing. Let us eagerly gather to ourselves all the knowledge of your Word that we can manage. And the more we progress, the more you will give; but those who neglect it can lose even that little bit that they have. Let us keep learning more of your Word and applying it ever more to our hearts and lives.

Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever.
Psalms 93:5

While the laws of the world may change, the law of the Lord remains forever. His Word never changes. His Word is holy. The church is the Lord's house. His house, the church, is holy because it recognizes His Word. The church should strive for holiness and service unto the Lord. Much like the church, we should also strive to honor God's Word in our hearts by how we live our lives. If the Lord lives in our hearts, then we should make this a holy house for him as well.

Dear God, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God. We bow reverently before your throne. May we honor your laws which you gave us in the Bible. While we know things of the world may pass away, we know that your Word lasts forever. It does not change. Allow our hearts to fix on your truths above all others so that we may live holy lives. Help us to honor your laws by our actions and our hearts. May our hearts by a welcome home for a holy savior. In Jesus' name, amen.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
James 4:7-8

Submit to God but resist the Devil. That is the twofold action we must take in our spiritual warfare. On the one hand there is utter surrender; on the other hand there is stern unyielding resistance. In any army, and so also in God's army, a good soldier must submit to his commander but fight tenaciously against the enemy.

O Captain of our salvation, O Commander of the army of the LORD, give us the strength to resist the temptations and attacks of Satan. Give us also the humility, love, and wisdom it takes to make an unconditional surrender to you each and every day.

For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
1 Corinthians 3:3

While there is no such thing as a continual carnal Christian who never shows any fruit in his or her life, there is certainly such a thing as a relatively carnal Christian, who is temporarily ensnared by the lusts of the eyes, the lusts of the flesh, and the pride of life. The more spiritual we become, the less important will seem the transient things of this life and the allure of fame, fortune, and supposed superiority over others.

Let us die daily to self, Lord, for to die to self and sin is to live that much more to God. Turn our concern inward to the things of the soul, to eternal things that matter most. And turn our concern outward to the welfare of others and most of all to pleasing you, our God, in everything we do.

That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
Titus 2:2

In the book of Titus, there are many instructions for how people should behave and carry themselves. Here we see that older men are to be patient. That certainly contrasts the newspaper cartoon image of a grumpy old man yelling at kids. The instructions are not so you have more rules. It is how we believers set ourselves apart from the world and how they see Jesus in us.

Lord, help me live in a way that others see You in me. Make me sound minded, having solid faith, and patient. Let me be giving and generous with my possessions and time. I pray for the older men in my church. Conform them to Your character. Keep growing and maturing them until they walk their last day with You. Thank You for Your instruction and wisdom You have given us. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water
Jeremiah 2:12-13

Jeremiah brought this timely Word from the Lord to Israel, rebuking them for abandoning the worship of the true God in order to follow after the false gods of the heathen nations around them. Jehovah was the fountain of living water, and the idols of the nations were like broken cisterns that would quickly run dry and prove utterly useless.

You, Lord, are the only true God and your Word is the foundation of all true religion. We see the world around us enamored of diversity, even when that means accepting falsehood as equal with truth. But your children will ever hold to your Word as the one infallible source of truth and "hate every false way. " (Psalm 119:104)

22/01/2022

And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Mark 1:11

God the Father took this occasion, the baptism of Christ, to declare his delight in his Son. Though the Father is always pleased with the Son, yet he proclaims the fact here to put special emphasis on his approval of what Christ had just done. Jesus did not enter the waters of baptism to symbolize repentance of any sin, for he had none to repent of. Instead, he went down into the water to represent his death for sinners on the cross and arose out of the water to represent his coming Resurrection. He was here, at the outset of his earthly ministry, committing himself to the cross.

Your baptism, Lord, was a token of your willingness to die for and save your people from their sin. It was an act of committal to your Father's will. May we also die daily to our own selfish desires and arise in newness of life, ready to serve you. When we were baptized, we indicated our trust in your saving power and our commitment to live a "resurrection life" for your glory. We rededicate ourselves to that vision today.

Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
Acts 15:35

When Jesus Christ rose from the dead and ascended to Heaven, he commissioned the disciples and sent them out to share his message with the world. In Antioch, Paul and Barnabas taught and preached the Word of the Lord, as well as many others. This shows us that those who believed in the resurrection followed Christ's order to share the good news to the ends of the earth. Who will you share the good news with today? Where is God calling you to teach and preach? Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you.

Dear God, we know you have called us to share your good news, but sometimes I am hesitant because I do not feel like I can be a teacher or a preacher. Help me to remember that your disciples were ordinary men who simply chose to follow you and obey your commands. Give me the courage to share your message wherever you send me. Holy Spirit, lead me. Allow me to be your hands and feet on earth and to bring others to know you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Colossians 1:13

Those living in sin are living in darkness. Even more, they are living under the power of darkness. We have a true enemy and it exists in this power of darkness pulling us further away from the light and from truth. It is in darkness where we try to hide our sins. However, we do not have to live in darkness! God sent his son, Jesus Christ, to save us! When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, he is quick to forgive us and we become a part of his kingdom. There is no darkness in his kingdom. Praise God!

Dear God, we know that spiritual warfare is real. The powers of darkness exist and they try to pull us away from the light and apart from you. Give me wisdom and strength to battle this darkness in your name. Thank you for sending your son, Jesus Christ, so that I no longer have to live in darkness but may rejoice as a member of your holy kingdom. We know you will conquer evil and darkness. Help me to live my life as a light shining in the darkness to help draw others to you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
1 Timothy 4:14

Here we see Paul encouraging Timothy to not neglect the gift that is in him. Paul is reminding him to use his gifts for God. Likewise, we should all remember to use our gifts for God. He has given each of us gifts, talents, and skills, all of which can be used to glorify Him. Each of us have many different talents. God made each of us unique and we can glorify Him in unique ways. There is not only one way to glorify God.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gifts you have given me. Remind me to use my gifts, skills, and assets for Your glory. Don't let me glorify myself with them. My life and gifts belong to You. You instilled them in me, and for You they will be used. You make good gifts. You are a mighty God and worthy of praise. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.
Psalms 103:5

The things that we receive from God are always good and they always refresh us. The world tries to offer us counterfeit forms of the good things God gives us, but they can never match up. Stick to the things of God; they will refresh your soul and make you feel as if you will remain a youth forever.

Dear God, I thank you that the things that come from you are good and true. May you help me discern what is from you and what is not. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
1 Timothy 4:12

When we are young, people often don't take us seriously. It can be frustrating, especially if people are telling you to act like an adult and yet you are treated like a child. Here we see Paul encouraging Timothy to be an example. Instead of dwelling on the disadvantage of youth, focus on being worthy of being looked up to. Focus on maturing spiritually. Let your words and conversations reflect Christ. Pray that your character will reflect Christ, and above all, have faith in God.

LORD, help me to have character that resembles You. Strengthen my faith in You, LORD. Help me to be content with my age and the stage of life I am in. Help me to do what I can do instead of focusing on what I can't do. Conform and shape me into who you want me to be. Above all, I want to please You. I want to do Your will and live for You. Give me wisdom and insight to do so, and lead me by Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name. Amen.
