"Directors have a unique position because in other classes, students have a different teacher every year. We are the one constant in their lives. We can make the greatest impact because year after year they trust their band director. We have an obligation to see them through the most transformative period of their lives. We are there with them." Roosevelt Griffin III in the April/May 2023 issue https://theinstrumentalist.com/april-may-2023/finding-strength-in-everybody/

"For me a conductor was a tiny little figure that I would see from the second balcony of Symphony Hall during all of those years of my teens. A barely discernible little figure, seen from very far away who was so glamorous and so inaccessible and special conducting a hundred odd men, that it never occurred to me that I could be such a thing."
-Leonard Bernstein (Peter Rosen interview 1977)

One of the best parts of awards season here is talking to directors about their top students. After challenging times over the past few years, it is heart-warming to hear about young leaders who set a strong example and helped keep programs moving forward. During the week, we ship all orders within 24 hours, the vast majority on the same day. Let us know how we can help. instrumentalistawards.com 888-446-6888

Happy National Pencil Day! ✏️

Leonard Bernstein referred to his composing pencil stubs as his "little soldiers". Here is a photo of a collection of these soldiers, along with many "reddy-blueys," double-pointed red and blue pencils he used for marking his conducting scores.

Bernstein's blue markings were for himself and his red markings were for an assistant or orchestra librarian to copy into the musicians' parts before the first rehearsal. The red marks might indicate dynamics, tempi, and expression markings that were not printed.
Bernstein was inspired to use red and blue markings after studying Gustav Mahler's own scores which feature red and blue annotations.
