Chicago Manual of Style is widely used, especially for books, and it tends to be very comprehensive. They waded into the waters about when to use "that." I'm not sure it totally worked, but I'm glad someone tried as I've been pretty confused about it. However, I'm pretty proud that I made a flowchart!

I have notes. This is just the first one, about "that."

July newsletter. It's easy to write sentences that are longer than they oughta be.

Long sentences promote attention and clarify the connection between thoughts. But they’re also tiring to read, so they can backfire. And often the connection between thoughts is clear even in separate sentences. Varying the length of your sentences is best.

A pronoun conundrum in my April newsletter.

I’ve been afraid to tackle whom because I wasn’t sure myself. I knew whom is the object of a verb and/or preposition, much like him or them: “who does what to whom?”

Spending all day editing gives me ample time to consider the most efficient and accurate way of doing simple things in documents.

An unsung virtue of the internet is the ability to copy and paste from it. I use this because I can never remember what NASA stands for or whether the S in SNAP stands for Supplementary or Supplemental. Even if you know it, it’s easy to mistype and slower than copying and pasting.

January is often slow at EpsteinWords. I know many of my clients are focused on teaching. As the parent of a college student and a high school junior, I’m glad! But it got me thinking about productivity and how painful its absence can be when you’re trying to write.
