Chicago Manual of Style is widely used, especially for books, and it tends to be very comprehensive. They waded into the waters about when to use "that." I'm not sure it totally worked, but I'm glad someone tried as I've been pretty confused about it. However, I'm pretty proud that I made a flowchart!

I have notes. This is just the first one, about "that."

November newsletter: some differences between Chicago Manual of Style and the style guide of the American Psychological Association.

Which style guide you are using matters beyond bibliographic references. They all have different rules for running text. Here are some examples from the two we use most, Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) and American Psychological Association Style (APA):

September newsletter--some words you might find useful when you talk about grammar.

A verb should always have a clear subject—that is, the thing doing the verb. Objects—a thing to which the verb is done—are optional. (This distinction is the key to deciding whether to use lie or lay.) It’s a little confusing because of the multiple meanings of the word subject. But you migh...

It's my 26th wedding anniversary and also a good day to post my August newsletter, which is about Track Changes and all it can do.

I've known my husband almost as long as I've been using MS Word.

New testimonial:)
I've used Kate and her team to copy edit two non-fiction manuscripts and proofread one. I wouldn't dream of using anyone else! It's hard to find someone that gets you and your work, but Kate does just that. Plus, Kate is always accessible and highly responsive. Her work is thorough and timely, helping me meet production deadlines. If you're in need of editing support, look no further. I'm confident you'll be as pleased as I have been.

July newsletter. It's easy to write sentences that are longer than they oughta be.

Long sentences promote attention and clarify the connection between thoughts. But they’re also tiring to read, so they can backfire. And often the connection between thoughts is clear even in separate sentences. Varying the length of your sentences is best.

June newsletter. Three things a lot of people believe that they shouldn't. The last one has more consequences than the other two.

I once believed that final punctuation goes outside the close quotation mark if the quotation is 1 or 2 words because someone a grade above me in school said so. (In UK English punctuation goes outside if it’s not in the original quotation.) No disrespect, but the student editor at your school new...

May newsletter. Are you ready for a productive summer?

Summer is often very exciting here at EpsteinWords, as many of our clients focus on their writing and send us wonderful projects to edit. But sometimes writing is hard. If you are finding it that way, consider my coaching services, which I offer at the same hourly rate as substantive editing. It’s...

A pronoun conundrum in my April newsletter.

I’ve been afraid to tackle whom because I wasn’t sure myself. I knew whom is the object of a verb and/or preposition, much like him or them: “who does what to whom?”

Spending all day editing gives me ample time to consider the most efficient and accurate way of doing simple things in documents.

An unsung virtue of the internet is the ability to copy and paste from it. I use this because I can never remember what NASA stands for or whether the S in SNAP stands for Supplementary or Supplemental. Even if you know it, it’s easy to mistype and slower than copying and pasting.

February newsletter--thinking about productivity.

January is often slow at EpsteinWords. I know many of my clients are focused on teaching. As the parent of a college student and a high school junior, I’m glad! But it got me thinking about productivity and how painful its absence can be when you’re trying to write.

new testimonial!
As my book publication approaches, I am so grateful for Kate’s support along the way. My editors have noted throughout this process that the book is so well-written and that was absolutely a collaborative effort that wouldn't have been possible without her ongoing feedback and suggestions. The book is infinitely better because of Kate.
