Happy 25th anniversary to Appendix Out’s Daylight Savings! Evoking haunting visions woven in and out of the mythic past and present, Daylight Savings is an exquisite chamber folk concoction led by Alasdair Roberts and featuring Kate from Movietone on vocal harmonies. One of all-too-few packages of arcane lore that this bunch from the heart of Scotland sent us in the late 90s - but fortunately, Alasdair has continued winningly on in the modern folk song-craft tradition through the decades since.

In the late 90s- early aughts, David Grubbs’ songs-with-singing albums lept from the heights of late-era Gastr del Sol, establishing his own kind of “pop” ouvre. 2004 saw the fourth in the series, now 20 years since it dawned: A Guess At the Riddle! The bright band sound highlights Grubbs’ singular electric guitar style and a reasonably straightforward set of songs (they're David Grubbs songs, afterall!). Adam Pierce (MiceParade, The Swirlies) and Thomas Belhorn’s kit work contributed to the highflying energies; David collaborated again with Rick Moody and Matmos for a song each and covered a favorite from the recent output of The Red Krayola, making a lovely all-round production of the process. In the decades since, David’s focused on improvised and instrumental music, to marvelous effect, but with only two other song-based releases. Meantime, we're afforded a chance to crack this one open again – whata joy!.

On her 1976 album debut, Troubadour, self-made travelling musician and folklorist Dorothy Carter wanders the world’s vanished landscapes and their traditional ways, playing songs from all over on her varieties of hammered dulcimer and psaltery: Appalachian folk tunes, old and ancient psalms and hymns, Scottish and French melodies and a few of her own songs for good measure. Over 45 years later, Troubadour stands as an epochal folk exegesis for our new age.

Listen to the current single, “King of Glory”, now. Link in bio.

The sun rises again - but this time, we don’t have to wonder what might have been and instead focus with clarity of purpose on what will BE: guitarist Lee Underwood’s 1988 acoustic guitar opus, California Sigh, sees its first-ever release on LP and TSP (Them Streaming Platforms, eh?) TODAY.

Lee Underwood’s syncretic blend of jazz, folk, and blues was a seismic force propelling Tim Buckley’s genre-stretching late 60s/early 70s music to the far cosmos – but Lee’s mid-80s return to planetary space with California Sigh - a meditation upon the land with folk and ambient healing musics, co-produced by Steve Roach - has remained a unsung footnote to his story. Until now!

Let forth with a deep California Sigh, link in bio to purchase and listen!

Happy 30th birthday to our reissue of Corky’s Debt To His Father coming to Drag City Records! Mayo Thompson’s masterpiece was originally released in 1970 - so happy 54 are also due to this album of such incredible properties that we can hardly believe it to this day. Surely one of the best records of the rock and roll age.

Fortunately, LPs are in stock now, so if you haven’t somehow heard of it in the last 30-50 years, you can get into its debt today!

The date was March 6, 2023. Bill Callahan strode onto the stage at Chicago’s Thalia Hall, flanked by Matt Kinsey on guitar, Dustin Laurenzi on alto sax and Jim White on the kit. They’re feeling good and so is the crowd, but what they don’t know is that night was ‘bout to get immortalized:

Presenting Resuscitate! 10 tracks from that fateful night, from a piping hot mid-point in Bill’s YTI⅃AƎЯ tour — not too green, not too brown. As Bill puts it:

“This is a live album that was taken from the tour for YTI⅃AƎЯ. Songs tend to mutate after they’ve been recorded. These songs were mutating faster than usual. Like whatever happened to Bruce Banner in the lab — I knew these songs were about to get superpowers. As far as I was concerned, this change needed to be documented...”

Bill went on to invite local players (Natural Information Society to name just one) to perform with him and the band throughout the show - it’s a night to remember, no doubt, but one that lives and breathes on Resuscitate! — out July 26, 2024 on 2xLP, CD, and digital platforms

Hark, denizens of the field and forest! Self-made traveling musician and folklorist Dorothy Carter’s 1976 debut album, folk-music exegesis, Troubadour, will be officially reissued for the first time! It’s been 20 years since Dorothy’s passing — but thanks to last year’s reissue of her second album, Waillee Waillee (1978), and this edition of Troubadour, her music is surging forward ever more powerfully.

Today, track The King of Glory drops on streaming services everywhere to bring you into Dorothy’s orbit of songcraft.

The mythos and arcana Dorothy Carter pursued in relative obscurity continues to inspire an audience larger than she ever knew — and now, a long-held family dream comes true with this reissue of Troubadour, out August 30, 2024.

Evil Does Not Exist, Eiko Ishibashi's soundtrack for Ryusuke Hamaguchi's 2023 feature film, is out at the end of the month!

A vital recomposition of the relationship of sound to narrative, and composer to filmmaker, Eiko’s latest soundtrack began as a collaboration when she asked Hamaguchi to make a video for her live performance. This live performance video then became Gift - pictured is Ishibashi doing her live performance for Gift, which had its visual material provided from Evil Does Not Exist.

Three marimbas, three voices, three psyches: This summer, Whitney Johnson’s long standing experimental project Matchess will deal sonic doubles across the U.S. with the amplified groupthink of a trio formation each night!

In June, Whitney will be joined onstage by Haley Fohr (AKA Circuit des Yeux) and Lula Asplund; in July, it’ll be Matchess, Haley, and Jenny Pulse.

Their individual practices in experimental music, sound art, and performance will invoke the “two against three” principle to alchemize a fresh collaboration on this tour of the American East, South, and West — with tremors of a new Whitney Johnson / Matchess album percolating! We’re surely feelin’ something…

Check out the full tour dates on Matchess’s website or on Drag City!

It was two decades ago that songstress White Magic first brought us Through the Sun Door. Their six song debut was nothing less than a next-level expression of folk-rock for the new century; a fully formed set of absolute gems of songs, led by the idiosyncratic vision and vocal presence of Mira Billote. Listening to it today after a long time away brings that mystic vibration that comes when something unknown is found in the wild, and upon bringing it home and putting it on the turntable, it turns out to perfect in a myriad of ways.

Happy 20th anniversary, Through the Sun Door!

Following their collaboration on 2021’s Oscar winning Drive My Car, Eiko Ishibashi & filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi have returned with a deeply inspired synergistic exchange: Evil Does Not Exist, a feature film that evolved from Eiko’s absorbing new soundtrack of the same name (out June 28). Are Possible is a spark-throwing, undulating fusion of styles spiraling from the Nathan Bowles Trio. Played (mainly) on banjo, upright bass and drums, these are songs made possible by the individual perspectives of virtuosic banjo player Nathan, double-bassist Casey Toll (Jake Xerxes Fussell, Mt. Moriah) and drummer Rex McMurry (CAVE) — working together in an easy-rolling manner, but one that contains an expansive, ass-shaking confabulation of ideas. Hear the first single off Are Possible today: “The Ternions”.

With the 1999 release of U.S. Maple’s Talker, pink turned to blue and a golden age passed into a silver one over a mere but massive 33 minutes. This ostensible maturing away from the childish (eg, completely awesome) things of their first two albums was achieved by going back to the fun and frenzy of high school daze. And indeed, Talker explored the deep and electric blues of teendom with their splendidly unique touch filtered through what might have been the heaviest U.S. Maple production ever, courtesy of Swans’ Michael Gira.

Get out your yearbooks! It’s 25 years since we commenced going to bruises for Talker; time to slip off your shoes and onto the dance floor. Don’t shed a tear for the old gang - Talker walks on.

Gastr del Sol: What We Were Listening to Instead of Practicing

For David Grubbs and Jim O’Rourke, Gastr del Sol rehearsal sometimes meant picking up guitars, but almost as often it meant trawling through one another’s record collections, turning the other person onto under-heralded gems of electronic music, musique concrète, post-punk, non-Western traditional musics, contemporary composition, and much more.

David and Jim put these songs together in a playlist - link to listen to the playlist in bio!!
