In respect to Juneteenth: The Market House built in 1838, in the center of Fayetteville, NC has had a contentious history. Built as a town hall and general market place in the style of similar buildings in the British Isles. Served as trading space for many goods. Slave sales according to a Duke University study were infrequent, but never doubted as slaves were sold to satisfy debts or liquidations meted out by the Town Hall/Magistrate on the second floor. According to Kristin Johnson, slave sales were far more than occasional liquidations of debt. And the lynching of Archie Beebe is also part of the history. The casualness of slave marketing as a trading mechanism makes the site historic in its "casualness." Various plans have been put forth including the removal of the classic building as well as transforming it to an educational/cultural Black Lives Do Matter space. https://www.fayobserver.com/story/opinion/columns/2024/02/20/fayetteville-nc-controversial-market-house-whats-next/72526608007/
