Here's DJ Bob's Second Desert Island Disc. This week, it's The Beatles' Revolver, which, in my humble opinion, is their most experimental and influential album to date in their career as rock trailblazers. Those of you who were around in the 60's, know that by this point, The Beatles were quickly approaching the pinnacle of their creativity. Rubber Soul was the first album, a musical departure from their moptop past lives, and an expansion of the band's sound, and Revolver was a big second step that culminated with Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Revolver marked George Harrison's real emergence as a songwriter, and the expansion of his interest in Indian music. It also showcased experiments in string and brass arrangements, hard edged rock, ballads, and finally, the chaotic avant garde explosion of Tomorrow Never Knows, with its tape loops, backwards tracks, sound effects, synthesized vocals, and hypnotic drum track, played live by Ringo. No rock group had ever done anything like it before. As usual, The Beatles were the forerunners. They did it all first.

So, there you have it. Revolver is this week's Desert Island Disc, a true rock classic.

Here's a new feature; DJ Bob's Desert Island Discs. Each week, I'll talk about one of my classic desert island 60's rock discs and why. Number one, in honor of guitarist Jerry Miller, who passed away last week, has to be Moby Grape's first album on Columbia Records.

When San Francisco exploded as the center of hippie culture in '67, the major record labels came calling, and The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother & The Holding Company and other bands were quickly signed, including Moby Grape, perhaps the greatest of them all. While some SF bands indulged in drug-fueled, meandering jams. Moby Grape's songs were tightly arranged and economical. All five members sang, and all of them were songwriters. With a three-guitar attack that never got cluttered, tons of talent, and great songs, they seemed poised for success, but everything quickly went wrong. On the night of their record release party, three members were arrested for consorting with underage females. They had a terrible manager who ripped them off and surreptitiously took ownership of their name and publishing royalties. Columbia foolishly released FIVE singles at once from their first album. DJ's were so confused, they barely played any of them. Guitarist Skip Spence was eventually committed to Bellevue Hospital in NYC after attacking drummer Don Stevenson with an axe. He left the band shortly after and never truly recovered from his mental illness.

Their follow-up LP, Wow, was overproduced and didn't sell well. To sum things up, Moby Grape broke up and regrouped many times over the years, and released new music sporadically, but never lived up to their potential. Their first album, simply titled Moby Grape, remains their masterpiece, and stands up well today. It's an album I cannot do without. If you have never heard it, or don't have it in your collection, just order a copy on vinyl or CD. Trust me, it's amazing, and it's our first Desert Island Disc. Moby Grape should have been huge, but they crashed and burned, like so many other rock 'n roll bands back then.

24/07/2024

It's real and honest rock 'n roll! Check it out Wednesday at 9:00 pm EST on WSRX-FM, 107.9 in the Vernon area, or stream it on vernonfm.org.

Well, it looks like we're getting our act together at WSRX-FM, 107.9 in Vernon, with our new programming software. It's a little more involved then the old software, which makes me question why these people always seem to make their updated software harder to deal with than what we already had. We're still in the process of uploading all our music, and because our song library is so vast, it's literally taking days to get it done. The good news is, my library is 100% intact, and I have programmed the first hour of my Monday show. So, don't forget, 60's Echoes is on this Monday night at 10:00 pm EST. As always, lotsa' great 60's rock on your Sussex County commercial-free alternative (to the local no-soul, corporate competition). See you Monday night. Stream us on
