Trotter of the Year" Jujubee receives a warm welcome at Ivy Lane Farm
(Ivy Lane photos attached)

Goshen, IN - Dan Patch “Trotter of the Year,” Jujubee 2,1:59.1f; 3,1:49.3 ($1,228,809), was introduced at Ivy Lane Farm's Open House on January 27 and visitors were impressed by his good looks and demeanor.

"We had an exceptional turnout largely due to Jujubee's presence at the farm," farm owner Cathy Webb shared. "The breeders in attendance were very impressed, and many of the them remarked that seeing him in person solidified their decision to book their mares to him."

Jujubee stands his first season at stud in 2024 for a fee of $4,000. He is the only 3-year-old trotter to record two sub-1:50 miles and the only “Trotter of the Year” to ever stand in Indiana.

To secure a 2024 booking contact Ivy Lane Farm at (574) 536-1600 or [email protected].

World Champion American Ideal Dies

World Champion racehorse and sire American Ideal, a dual hemisphere stallion, died yesterday at the age of 22. He stood since the beginning of his career at Blue Chip Farms in the U.S. and had stood in Australia at Llowalong Farms in conjunction with Woodlands Stud of New Zealand.

While quarantined in Australia awaiting shipping back to the U.S., the horse developed severe colic. During emergency surgery numerous cancerous masses were revealed, which resulted in the horse being humanely euthanized.

“It’s a sad day, as American Ideal was a longtime member of the Brittany family, and also endeared himself to everyone at Blue Chip Farms,” said Art Zubrod, manager of Brittany Farms and Brittany Stallion Management. “He was a sire who was an easy breeder with intelligence and a great personality.

“I like to say he never had a ‘down year,’ as since his first crop stepped on the track he has produced champions or prominent stakes winners every single year.”

American Ideal p,3,1:47.4 ($786,055), by Western Ideal-Lifetime Success, was bred and raised by Brittany Farms and sold as a Tattersalls yearling. He raced from 2004 through 2006 for Mac Nichol, who partnered with Brittany during the c**t’s sophomore season.

American Ideal’s most prominent victories included the Tattersalls Pace in a then-World Record 1:47.4, the Bluegrass Stakes, Confederation Cup and Provincial Cup.

With a stallion career managed by Brittany Stallion Management, from 2009 to the present day American Ideal had sired the winners of more than $163-million in North America and $18.6-million in Australia. He had sired 18 worldwide millionaires and produced a career total of 70 yearlings that have sold for $100,000 or more.

His progeny is led by such greats as 2 and 3-year-old World Champion American Jewel p,3,1:48.2 ( $1,840,656), World Champion and Meadowlands Pace winner He’s Watching p,3,1:46.4 ($1,16,450), Heston Blue Chip p,3,1:48f ($1,781,881) and American History p,3,1:47 ($1,561,817). One of his newest millionaires, Copy That, captured the $1,000,000 Race By Grins FFA Pace in New Zealand last year.

American Ideal is the all-time leading money-winning pacing sire in the New York Sire Stakes program. Last year alone his 2 and 3-year-olds earned almost $2-million in NYSS competition and included NYSS 2YO Filly Pace Champion Peace Talks p,2,1:55.4h ($225,569).

ÅKE SVANSTEDT, SCOTT ZERON EASILY WIN USHWA’S TRAINER, DRIVER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

HARRISBURG PA – Åke Svanstedt, who seemed to have one (or sometimes more than one) of the top contenders in just about every major trotting stakes race in 2023 North America, has been voted Trainer of the Year by the United States Harness Writers Association (USHWA), the sport’s leading media organization.

During the same voting, Scott Zeron, nicknamed “The Money Man,” went over $10 million in earnings for the first time and was a “Perfect 10” from the number ten post in the Hambletonian at The Meadowlands and Breeders Crown at Hoosier Park with Tactical Approach, nabbing the Driver of the Year accolades. It was the first title in this category for both horsemen, though Zeron was USHWA’s Rising Star in 2012. Both horsemen topped their 2023 group by a wide voting margin.

The 65-year-old Svanstedt came to North America from his native Sweden in 2014, and his stable has earned $52.5 million on “this side,” placing him in the Top Twenty since the USTA began keeping records in 1992, with only one of his rivals in the Top Twenty beginning their NoAm careers after 1998. And 2023 was the best year for trotters from the green and white stable, with $9.85 million in accumulated bankrolls, second only to the ubiquitous Ron Burke stable.

Breeders Crown trotting action at Hoosier Park showed Svanstedt trainees at their best, with four winners – Warrawee Michelle, Bond, Southwind Tyrion, and Jiggy Jog S in the six trotting events (and Åke guiding all but Jiggy Jog S). In all, Svanstedt sent eleven horses postward in the Crown competition, with two more finishing second. Svanstedt trainees also won all eleven divisions of the Simpson Stakes for trotters in which they raced this fall at Pocono.

In sum, 24 different horses won stakes of $100,000 or more for the barn, with 13 different diamondgaiters contributing to that circle of success. Jiggy Jog S was the barn’s richest performer with $1,038,496, and three stablemates joined her among the top ten moneywinners among trotters.

Svanstedt’s team just missed $10 million in earnings; horses handled by the 34-year-old Zeron just eclipsed that figure for a personal best, pushing his career earnings just over $100 million. As noted above, Zeron was “stuck behind the 10-ball” in two major stakes, starting from the outside in the Hambletonian and as a trailer in the Breeders Crown with Tactical Approach, but both times provided heady drives behind the major Trotter of the Year contender to get the money despite the unlucky draw. (He also won from post ten with Tactical Mounds in the $275,000 New Jersey Classic 3TF final.)

Tactical Approach was the leading moneywinning trotter of 2023 with $1,507,989 amassed. Zeron guided him in every one of his races, as he did with another millionaire, the sophomore pacer Its My Show ($1.073,354). That one first won the North America Cup and then the Little Brown Jug, in the latter contest completing a sweep of the Delaware (OH) classics for himself and trainer Linda Toscano after Ucandoit Blue Chip had won the Jugette. All that picture posing in Victory Lane helped Zeron garner 107 ballots, most of any two-legged creature in the voting cycle.

Åke Svanstedt and Scott Zeron will be honored at the annual Dan Patch Awards Banquet, presented by Caesars Entertainment, to be held Sunday, February 25, 2024 at the Rosen Centre in Orlando FL.

Room reservations at Rosen Centre for the star-studded Dan Patch Awards weekend can be made at the USHWA website at usharnesswriters.com.

DIAMOND CREEK SWEEPS USHWA’S OWNER, BREEDER OF THE YEAR COMPETITIONS

HARRISBURG PA – The Diamond Creek Farm operation under the direction of youthful veteran Adam Bowden has won two top awards for 2023 success in voting conducted by the United States Harness Writers Association (USHWA): Owner of the Year, taken by Diamond Creek’s sulky side, Diamond Creek Racing, and Breeder of the Year, in operation as Diamond Creek Farms LLC.

Bowden came out of Maine in 2005 to establish Diamond Creek Farm in Kentucky. He then extended the operation to a Pennsylvania property in 2012, and Diamond Creek has been a continuous rising force on both the racetrack and the breeding shed. No statistics are kept on ownership because of the many partnerships involved, but Diamond Creek Farms’ breeding operation produced the winners of over $8.8 million during this past year, good for an average of almost $69,511, far in excess of any of its competitors in the Top 10 breeders.

A perfect example of the “crossover” of the two Diamond Creek operations would be the three-year-old c**t pacer Confederate, the early favorite for Harness Horse of the Year honors (which will be announced February 25 at the Dan Patch Banquet in Orlando FL, information about which is at the bottom of this release). A winner of 13 of 15 starts in 2023, he earned a sport-high $1,633,854 while taking a mark of 1:46.1, just two ticks off the all-time record, at Lexington. Confederate now goes into the stallion ranks at Diamond Creek’s Pennsylvania farm, where he will join Always B Miki, Bettor’s Wish, and two other stallions about which we will have more to say shortly. Also going to Diamond Creek Pennsylvania is Cannibal, beginning a second career for Diamond Creek off of a $661,742-earning year.

Other Diamond Creek Farm-bred stars in 2023 include a pair of fillies, the three-year-old trotter Bond and the two-year-old pacer Geocentric, both of whom will draw considerable attention in their divisional championships (the divisional honors will be announced Saturday during The Meadowlands’ “pre-game show”).

In most of their stakes races, Diamond Creek Racing performers wear the farm’s distinctive colors, white with blue and black checkerboards. Harness fans in 2023 saw those colors quite a lot, and figure to be hearing a lot more from the dynamic, up-and-coming Diamond Creek operation in years to come.

SWEET LOU, TACTICAL LANDING INAUGURAL “SIRE OF THE YEAR” WINNERS

Remember we mentioned two additional racehorses who will stand at stud at Diamond Creek in 2024? One is Sweet Lou, who was voted Pacing Sire of the Year as this year USHWA included awards honoring top sires at each gait, paralleling the broodmare program that is in place. The other new Diamond Creek stallion is Tactical Approach, whose sire Tactical Landing sired a devastating 1-2 c**t punch last year in the sophomore “Approach” and the freshman Karl en route to be the first Trotting Sire of the Year.

Sweet Lou, a son of Yankee Cruiser – Sweet Future (Falcon’s Future), is owned by the Sweet Lou Syndicate. A champion racehorse, Sweet Lou continues unabated in the breeding barn: he sired both Confederate and another $1 million-winning three-year-old c**t pacer in It’s My Show, plus three other $500,000+ winners in My Girl EJ, Cannibal, and Geocentric (the latter two Diamond Creek horses). Sweet Lou was the top sire of moneywinning three-year-olds, and was second in both the two-year-old and overall categories. His 110 votes was the most received by anyone in the voting for breeding awards.

Tactical Landing, who made $812,300 at the races, is a son of Muscle Hill – Southwind Serena (Varenne) owned by the Tactical Landing Syndicate. He ranked among the top quartet in earnings among trotting sires for both three-year-olds and two-year-olds, with a millionaire of each age (Tactical Approach, $1,507,989, and Karl, $1,041,989). Mommamia Volo also had a fine year with $470,000+ bankrolled and a victory in the Kentucky Filly Futurity.

MARGARITA MOMMA, LUCY’S PEARL WIN BROODMARE HONORS

If Trotting Broodmare of the Year Margarita Momma has a familiar-sounding name, you just read about a similarly-named horse – Mommamia Volo, her sophomore daughter, was mentioned above as adding to the luster of Trotting Sire of the Year Tactical Landing with a fine season. The mare Margarita Momma, a daughter of Yankee Glide – Sheena Hall (Conway Hall) leased by Jorgen Jahre Jr. and Kentuckiana Farms LLC, also saw her world champion free-for-all son Amigo Volo add almost $200,000 to his lifetime bankroll, bringing out well above the $2 million total for his lifetime.

In by far the closest contest among the breeding awards contenders, Lucy’s Pearl edged Western Montana by three votes. A daughter of Well Said – Remember When (Camluck), Lucy’s Pearl was well-represented on the racetrack by My Girl EJ, the fastest two-year-old, male or female, of 2023 with a 1:49.1 clocking, and a winner of $698,397. The Jug-winning son of Lucy’s Pearl, Lou’s Pearlman, won in excess of $300,000 during the past campaign and now has a career bankroll of $1,242,987.

Adam Bowden’s Diamond Creek enterprise and the four horses winning a title for prowess in the breeding shed will all be honored at the annual Dan Patch Awards Banquet, presented by Caesars Entertainment, to be held Sunday, February 25, 2024 at the Rosen Centre in Orlando FL.

Room reservations at Rosen Centre for the star-studded Dan Patch Awards weekend can be made at the USHWA website at usharnesswriters.com.

Brookview Bolt Tops Strong Blooded Horse Sale at $100,000

The 76th Annual Fall Blooded Horse Sale saw a 13 percent year-over-year increase with an almost identical 300 horses sold vs 302 last year.

“We knew we had a good group of horses catalogued,” said sale manager Jerry Haws. “We appreciate the stables that consigned nice racehorses and the breeding farms that sent attractive mares, yearlings and weanlings.”

The Burke Racing Stable consignment included sale-topper Brookview Bolt 5,1:52s for $100,000 and runner-up Coastal p,4,1:50.2f for $85,000. Brookview Bolt, an ultra-consistent 5-year-old son of Swan For All with earnings of $130,250 this year while racing in the Open Trot at Hoosier Park, was purchased by Bill Rhoades of Pennsylvania.

“I needed an Open Trotter for Northfield Park and the Meadows,” Rhoades said. “He fits that class well; I’ll see which of my owners want a part of him.”

Though Coastal had just won the $85,000 Ohio Sires Stakes 4-year-old Mare Championship, she was purchased by Jonas Schlabach of Ohio not to race but to breed. “I own a share of Monte Miki and needed a good mare to breed to him,” he said.

Also in the strong Burke Racing Stable consignment was the rich and fast Uncle Peter trotting mare Favorite Aunt 4,1:54h ($202,634) that went to Steiner Stock Farm on a $53,000 bid.

Amanda Beaver brought the 3-year-old Indiana Sires Stakes-placed trotting filly Swan Fancy that was purchased by Ed Zubkoff (agent) of Michigan for $43,000.

The yearlings sold first and were led by a pair of especially beautiful ones from Dublin Valley Farm. What A Shot, by What The Hill out of the multiple Indiana Fair Stakes winner Earl’s Last Shot, was purchased by Ian Yoder of Ohio for $30,000; and Sunrise Instead, a daughter of Volstead out of the Indiana Sires Stakes-placed Sunset Girl, went to Richard Owings of Ohio on a $25,000 bid.

Spring Haven Farm brought a stellar consignment of broodmares that included the popular Ohio Sires Stakes-winning ML Cupcake, dam of multiple Ohio Sires stakes winners, all with “cupcake” in their name. In-foal to the promising young sire Volstead, the 15-year-old daughter of Master Lavec was purchased by Midland Acres for $36,000.

Somegirl Somewhere, with a Tall Dark Stranger c**t by her side, drew spirited bidding. Leroy Burkholder of Ohio ultimately prevailed at $29,000. Consigned by Ruddick Stables as agent, the beautiful daughter of Somebeachsomewhere was back in-foal to Tall Dark Stranger.

Anvil and Lace Farm was agent for a fashionable group of five young trotting mares all in-foal to Volstead. Call Me Coco, by EL Titan, and Kenogami Love, by Muscle Mass, both sold for $28,000, going respectively to Leon A Miller and Melvin A. Detweiler of Ohio. Posh Spice, by Trixton, was purchased for $25,000 by Alvin W. Yoder of Ohio, Snickers Blue Chip, by Credit Winner, was purchased by Jonas Z Schwartz of Indiana for $22,000, and Infanta Deo, by Muscle Hill, was purchased by Jodi Siamis of Iowa for $21,000.

USHWA DONATES $10,000 TO THE TIOGA DOWNS RECOVERY EFFORT

HARRISBURG, PA – After the devastating loss of horseflesh and livelihood suffered this past Thursday after a barn fire at Tioga Downs in southcentral New York took the lives of thirty animals (including three-yearlings and seven two- and three-year-olds, just starting on their careers), the United States Harness Writers Association (USHWA) opens its minds and hearts to those affected by the horrible situation and is making a $10,000 donation to the Southern Tier Harness Horsemen’s Association, designed to reach those directly affected by the senseless tragedy to start to rebuild their lives.

USHWA has a Welfare Committee, chaired by Treasurer Bill MacDonald and consisting of the president of each of the USHWA chapters, which usually reviews requests for aid by those touched by hardship. In this case, the loss was tremendous and obvious, and USHWA immediately initiated the poll within its Welfare Committee and executive members.

“The membership of USHWA is devastated by the events taking place at Tioga,” said USHWA President Barry Lefkowitz. “We stand behind the horsemen affected by this horrific incident and are trying to help them to make some headway into the incalculable damage as they try to bring some part of normalcy back to their lives, working with the horses they love so much.”

Jujubee breeding to benefit the Tioga Relief Fund

“As a horse owner for over forty years and devoted to our great sport, I could not begin to imagine the emotions and struggles that those affected must be going through,” was the reaction of Jon Erdner, the owner of “Trotter of the Year” Jujubee when he first learned of the tragic fire at Tioga Downs last week. “Noticing the wonderful donations made by so many and breeders in particular, we have added to that with a donation of a 2024 breeding to our first-year stallion Jujubee.”
Offered on Ongait.com to the Tioga Relief Fund.

Owned by Jon Erdner, Jujubee will stand his first season at stud in 2024 in Indiana at Ivy Lane Farm. Limited bookings are available.

Trotter of the Year" Jujubee to stand his first season in 2024 at Ivy Lane Farm
(Amanda Stephens photo attached)

Goshen, IN - Jon Erdner, the owner of Dan Patch “Trotter of the Year,” Jujubee 2,1:59.1f; 3,1:49.3 ($1,228,809), is excited to announce that Jujubee will stand his first season at stud in 2024 in Indiana at Ivy Lane Farm. The only 3-year-old trotter to record two sub-1:50 miles and the only “Trotter of the Year” to ever stand in Indiana, his fee has been set at $4,000.
With the consulting and assistance of Bob Boni of Northwood Bloodstock Agency, the decision was made to bring Jujubee to Indiana, not only for the very strong Sire Stakes program but also for the outstanding schedule of Open Stakes that Hoosier annually offers.

Jujubee was the winner of 14 of 18 starts at three, including the Breeders Crown Final, Kentucky Futurity, Pennsylvania Sire Stakes Final, Langley Memorial and Muscle Hill, with his incredible sophomore season culminating in him being voted Dan Patch “Trotter of the Year.”

His 3-year-old earnings of $948,791 made him the richest 3-year-old trotting c**t of 2021 and he retires to stud with a career bankroll of $1,228,809. He is the fastest and richest son of $2.1-million winner and Breeders Crown Champion Creatine 4,1:51.2 ($2,102,022).

“In over forty years of owning racehorses I have never had one that brought me the excitement that I enjoyed with Jujubee…having been to the Red Mile so many times his Kentucky Futurity win was extra special…to win such a classic race at that track was a thrill we will never forget.

As rewarding as his racing career has been I am just as excited about his next career as he enters the stud at Ivy Lane Farm in Indiana. He has already given us so much and now I can’t wait to see his c**ts and fillies racing.”

Jujubee’s trainer throughout his racing career, Greg Wright, said he knew he was something special at the very beginning.

“Right from the start he showed that he was a strong and powerful horse that developed unbelievable speed…he made his own trips and loved doing the heavy lifting.”

Driver Andrew McCarthy remembers Jujubee’s amazing talent and desire to win.

“Jujubee is a freakishly talented horse that gave me goosebumps when I asked him for top speed…he showed he had huge lungs and an unbelievable gait and an amazing desire to win.”

The owners of Ivy Lane Farm, Dr. Paul and Cathy Webb, are looking forward to Jujubee’s arrival with much anticipation.

“We are beyond excited to have been given the opportunity to stand a stallion such as Jujubee for the 2024 breeding season.

His strong 1:49.3 finish in the Kentucky Futurity, as well as his 1:49.4 finish at the Meadowlands demonstrated his extreme natural ability. We anticipate that Jujubee can bring the competition in Indiana to a whole new level.”

HHYF Receives Donation In Honor of Chris Wittstruck

The Harness Horse Youth Foundation recently received a significant donation honoring one of the industry's hardest working good guys, Chris Wittstruck, an SOA of NY director, pension trustee and USHWAN. The celebration aptly took place at Goshen Historic Track in New York who has served as host and supported HHYF activities for the past two decades.

"Our industry is filled with acronyms, maybe the most important of which is HHYF. You can walk into a sporting goods store and buy baseball bats, soccer balls, footballs, basketballs; hockey sticks and possibly a riding crop. Our sport is different; with ever-dwindling media coverage, youth introduction and exposure to harness racing can only be achieved through passionate mentoring. By teaching the next generation care and respect of the Standardbred, dispelling the mystery of our equipment and sharing the sheer joy of race competition the Harness Horse Youth Foundation ensures the continued existence of our game. It is because of the inimitable role HHYF plays that I am so very pleased and touched that my client, Far Out Farm, a prominent agricultural operation in Saratoga County, New York, has made today’s substantial contribution in my honor" an exuberant Wittstruck expounded.

This is not the first time Chris's goodness has benefited HHYF. In 2016, upon receiving the prestigious Stan Bergstein Writing award, he immediately donated the cash prize to HHYF and was subsequently selected as the year's Service To Youth Award recipient. Chris's support over the years has not only provided financial sustainability but his enthusiasm for the HHYF mission is inspiring to others. His association with Far Out Farm LLC is another example of that pay-it-forward type of philanthropy.

HHYF is deeply grateful for the timely and generous gift that has arrived during this pivotal expansion phase for HHYF. As HHYF explores new options for better fulfillment of the mission, the following are already in progress: 1. retrofitting the activity box to enhance its suitability for agriculture education classrooms, complete with engaging and ready-to-roll hands-on activities meticulously coded to meet both Common Core State Standards and National Council for Agriculture Education Standard; 2. establishment of an online learning module; and 3.a collaborative effort to develop a dynamic hands-on internship program. HHYF recognizes that the valuable knowledge imparted during the hands-on camps should include continuous augmentation for the benefit of its young participants.

Executive Director Ellen Taylor further explained "Over the past four decades, our programs have been renowned for their excellence in providing real life horse experiences and educational value. We take immense pride in the transformations they have ignited in the lives of countless individuals. As we embark on this new chapter, we are keenly aware of the shifts in young people's evolving interactions with learning. However, there remains one steadfast constant: the unyielding interest young people possess for horses. Once harnessed into our industry, this passion becomes the life's blood and the very future of the industry we cherish. In the spirit of Far Out Farm's generosity, HHYF extends an invitation to all who share fervor for the sport's future to join in these endeavors. We call upon those who are impassioned and inspired by the prospect of making a difference to consider volunteering as speakers or assistant drivers at our camps, by supporting the camps directly through donations of bedding, hay, grain, fuel, or with monetary contributions which will play a vital role in sustaining and expanding our mission."

Taylor concluded "HHYF understands that it truly takes a village to nurture and empower the next generation. We treasure our unwavering supporters and recognize that together, we are creating a brighter future for both these aspiring young minds and the industry we enjoy."

The Harness Horse Youth Foundation is a charitable 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing young people and their families educational opportunities with harness horses in order to foster the next generation of participants and fans. The Foundation has been making a difference in young people's lives since 1976; its programs include interactive learning experiences with racehorses as well as offering scholarships and creating and distributing educational materials relating to harness racing.

Vital Equine Industry Resource Now Available Online

The latest trend is to resurrect things that were once considered new. In light of that trend, two esteemed equine institutions are bringing back a vital piece of informative material to assist the equine industry.

The American Horse Council (AHC) and American Youth Horse Council (AYHC) have joined forces to recreate a directory of equine educational resources known as The Source Book.

Originally published in 1999, the AYHC’s Source Book included a list of brochures, CDs, publications and other educational material. Since then, technology has delivered a wider variety of resources that now includes online learning platforms, podcasts, e-publications and more. It was time to refresh and bring back The Source Book.

The updated list will include resources that are provided by equine associations, equine nonprofits, academic institutions and Cooperative Extension Services. The Source Book will be available as an online tool on both the AYHC and AHC websites.

“One of the missions of the American Horse Council to provide as many doors to opportunities as possible to all horse owners and enthusiasts,” says Julie Broadway, president of the AHC. “And, it is the mission of the AYHC to provide leadership and resources that will serve and promote the youth of the equine industry. Partnering on this Source Book is just a small part of what both groups can do to help enthusiasts, supporters and everyone in the industry.”

Submissions are free and are being accepted by all equine associations and nonprofit organizations until October 1, 2023. To be a part of this revolutionary resource list, complete the following form: https://forms.gle/S9918UmTdvom5fA26
