One of the traits of both great businesses and successful investing, is the proclivity to maximize the productivity of all available assets.

As far as HS sports go, no one is doing that like Bernards.

Once again the 6th ranked Mountaineers utilized their multi-sport squadron of athletes to defeat a high level, much larger opponent in a 12-5 dub over arch-rival and 9th ranked Ridge on Monday.

Among the leading point getters for Bernards were Jake Caldwell (football, wrestling, lacrosse) with 2 goals and 4 assists, Charlie Hunewell (wrestling, lacrosse) with a hat trick and 2 assists, and David Brothers (football, wrestling, lacrosse) with a goal and 2 assists.

This girl is on fire.

Watchung Hills moved their record to 11-1 today with a 12-2 dub over Cranford as Mia Simon went 3-4 with 4 ribbys and a pair of roundtrippers.

Simon, a junior, is batting .500 (22-44) with 19 rbis and 6 HR’s this season.

Btw, over 28 and a third innings this season she’s dealing to a 0.74 ERA.

As a sophomore last year Emma Ciocon averaged a hat trick per game on her way to scoring 78 goals for the Bridgewater Panthers.

Emma, a 2nd team All-Group 4 selection last year, is now on a 4 goal per contest pace this season.

With her eight 3+ goal game yesterday Emma led the Panthers to a 15-2 dub over visiting Stuart Country Day school as the Panthers moved to 7-2 on the season.

Emma is committed to play for The Army Black Knights, but before she can sink Navy she’s got something else to sink. That’s right, she’s headed to Bubbakoo’s for her delicious PoG Burrito while her platoon takes in their 15% PoG Entourage discount.

Over the last decade the Bridgewater Girls Lacrosse program has compiled a record of 146-23.

Along the way they’ve won 6 Somerset County Titles and both a TOC title and final state #1 ranking in 2017.

Currently checking in at #19 in the NJ.com State Top 20, the 7-2 Panthers have just two seniors on their roster.

Leading the team in scoring is soph Giada Cantazaro (22g, 37a, 59 pts) and a trio of juniors- Emma Ciocon (35g, 1a, 36pts), Allie Prickett (19g, 4a, 23pts), Ella Daehnke (18g, 2a, 20pts).

In a matchup that featured two top 15 teams and a striking collection of some of the best players in the state, #13 Kent Place edged #7 Chatham 11-10 in OT on Monday.

The Cougars got 5 goals from Princeton-bound Addison Barrett, but the Dragons countered with half a dozen from one of NJ’s top Sophs, Caitlyn Quinn.

In a game full of prospective collegians, Chatham’s Grace Hallahan, a future Richmond Spider and Kent Place’s Lily Gomes, who is headed to Stony Brook, each chipped in a hat trick.

En Fuego.

For the 2nd consecutive week Summit has knocked off a Top 20 opponent. Last week it was #5 GL, today it was #12 Westfield.

One of the reasons for the Hilltoppers' impressive start is 2nd baseman Ryan Barber.

Barber, who is buzzing opposing pitching at a .500 clip (21 for 42) was 2-4 today with a pair of ribby’s and a couple of swipes.

Get this. Ryan, who was actually a JV player last year, has a hit in every game he has played and multi-hit games 8 times.

23/04/2024

Too many weapons.

Given Bernards offensive arsenal of David Brothers, who has 49 pts this season and 272 for his career, Charlie Hunnewell (30 this year, 152 career), Finn Vaccaro (36, 158) and oncoming Soph Logan Stevens who has 33 points this season, you’d be forgiven if you overlooked the capabilities of Jake Caldwell.

Often playing the role of the steady hand who keeps the ball flowing, Jake got busy slicing and dicing yesterday as he put up 2 goals and 4 assists in the Mountaineers 12-5 dub over arch rival Ridge.

Jake, who will be taking his game to Babson College next year, now sits 1 point away from his career 100th.

Babson, ranked #15 nationally in D3, ranks among the nation’s Top 100 colleges in lowest acceptance rates, is the current home of local athletes Alex Yablonsky (GL Soccer), Josie Ashton (Chatham/Mo Beard Field Hockey) and Nicolette Newsome (Bridgewater Swimming).

When Jake’s at Babson he’ll be about a 20 minute drive on the Mass Pike to Fenway Park. Once there he’ll have the opportunity to feast upon the wicked delish Mac n Cheese at the Cask ‘N Flagon just behind the Green Monstah.

Do you know what wicked delish meal Jake will soon be feasting upon, without having to go all the way to Fenway? Of course you do. Jake will be chowing on his delectable PoG Burrito while his crew connects with their 15% Entourage discount right here at Bubbakoos.

So far this season we’ve had an earthquake, an eclipse and now a triple play.

With Hillsborough threatening in the 6th, 2nd Baseman Jason Wu snared a line drive and immediately tossed to SS Landon Pudlak who quickly fired to an alert Ethan Byrd at first to completely kill the potential rally.

A plus defender with a solid bat, he’s batting .324 this season, Jason is also a plus student who has committed to play at Stevens Tech next year.

Watchung Hills Sophomore Robbie Centamore went 6 ⅓ with 7 k’s as Watchung Hills dropped Hillsborough 4-2 in a Skylands Conference matchup this Saturday.

Centamore, who is emerging as one of the top Soph hurlers in the area, dropped his ERA to 2.38 and now leads the Warriors in innings pitched.

Along with being the benefactor of a 6th inning 4-6-3 triple play, Centamore helped himself immensely with a beautiful pick-off of a Raider runner on 3rd base in the 5th to shut down a threat.

Robbie is looking like a kid who’s going to eat up a lot of innings for the Warriors over the couple years, you know what else he’s going to be eating up?

Of course you do. He’s going to be eating up a delicious PoG Burrito from Bubbakoos while his teammates field themselves their 15% PoG Entourage discount.

Last year GL graduated a quintet of seniors who had combined for a .402 batting average and a pair of pitchers who had thrown 94% of the innings the Highlanders played.

Throw in small sophomore and junior classes and you could be justified to consider 2024 as a rebuild year.

But here we are 12 games in to the season and the Highlanders are 9-3 and holding the #1 seed in Central Jersey group 2.

8 of the girls in GL’s active rotation are either Sophomores or Freshman including both of the pitchers (Alyssa Monaco and Addy Figlar).

The three upperclassmen are not just providing great leadership, they are producing at the plate. Gianna Basile, Emma McElroy and junior Chelsea Kieswetter have combined for a .370 batting average with 33 rbi and a dozen extra base hits.

McElroy, a Penn State Brandywine commit, got her 100th career hit in yesterday’s 2nd game, a 4-3 loss to 8-1 Immaculata.

Gianna Basile’s clutch bottom of the 7th, game winning rbi gave GL a come-from-behind 6-5 dub over visiting Chatham in Saturday's Rick Iacono showdown.

Down 5-3 with just 3 outs of breathing rooml, the Highlander bats came to life as they got singles from Chelsea Kieswettter, Lily Sandholm, Carly Pfeiffer and Vanessa Popola to tie the game and bring Basile to the plate.

Gianna, one of just two seniors in the GL lineup yesterday, ripped a liner to left to score Pfeiffer to give the Highlanders the walk off dub.

You know what Gianna will be ripping into next? Of course you do. She’s gonna tear up her delicious PoG Burrito from Bubbakoos while her teammates hop on their 15% PoG Entourage discount.

Maybe teams should start defending Cody Lam with three players.

Cuz two aint workin.

On Friday Grown Man Lam, a Princeton commit, bullied Delbarton with his third hat trick of the season as The Blue Devils knocked off their third consecutive Top 5 team in a 9-7 dub over the Green Wave.

When Cody gets to Princeton it's inevitable that he’ll take a stroll down Nassau Street to the world renowned Hoagie Haven and dig into delectables like the “Big Cat”, a double bacon cheeseburger with two eggs or perhaps, given his style of play, the “Body Bag” a cheesesteak with hash browns, eggs and hot sauce.

But before he gets to Hoagie Haven he’s got somewhere else to go. That’s right, Cody is headed to Bubbakoos where he’ll have a choice of a dozen different sauces to slather onto his delicious PoG Burrito while his crew slides into their 15% PoG Entourage discount.

Straight flush.

In three consecutive weeks Westfield has taken down #3 Summit, #1 Seton Hall and now #2 Delbarton.

The difference maker for the Blue Devils is that beasts like Michael Marshall, Cody Lam and Colin Coyle play with a grown-man physicality that opponents just can’t match.

Lam and Coyle, who combined for five goals on Friday in Westfield’s 9-7 dub over Delbarton, have a size and strength advantage that make them very tough to defend alone. And when opponents double the big men, Junior Garret Ferguson has torched them.

After not seeing much time as a Soph, Ferguson is lighting it up this season with 22 goals many of which have been paired with an assist from UMASS Amherst commit Coyle and the Princeton bound Lam.

One of the primary reasons Bridgewater is 9-1 and ranked #5 in the state is the scorching hot bat of Matt Fattore.

Matt, a Belmont Abbey commit, is ripping a .538 batting average with 13 rbi and has had a hit in 9 of The Panthers 10 games. The only game he did not get a hit in was a 14-3 dub over Roxbury in which he was twice hit by a pitch along with a walk and an rbi sac fly.

Belmont Abbey, a D2 team, is located in Belmont North Carolina just outside Charlotte.

Caden Kirst looks great in Red and Black unis.

This works out quite well because next year he’ll trade his Bernards Red and Black for that of The Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

This season Caden is allowing a paltry 3 goals per game as Bernards, the #5 ranked team in the state, has lumped up their opposition by an aggregate 92-27 count.

On Thursday Caden and the Mountaineers shut down next door neighbor and 17th ranked Bridgewater 9-5 to move to 6-0 on the season.

A big man with quick hands, Caden is the 5th and youngest sibling of one of the most well known lacrosse families in the country.

Three of Caden’s older brothers- Connor, Colin and Cole- are playing lacrosse professionally, while the 4th, CJ, is a 1st Team All-American and the reigning Ivy League player-of-the-year at Cornell.

Before Caden heads down 287 to Piscataway, do you know where else he’ll be headed? Of course you do. He’s headed to Bubbakoos to dig into his delicious PoG Burrito while his accompanying teammates dig into their 15% PoG Entourage discount.

Btw, do you know who one of Rutgers Athletics biggest sponsors is? That’s right, it's Bubbakoos.

When a sub-Group 4 school excels in a sport as much as Chatham has with Girl’s Lacrosse, it's often an accurate assumption that the other sport in that season is a bit of an afterthought.

With the Cougar’s exceptional run in Girls Lacrosse, they’ve won 6 Group Titles since 2008, it would be very easy to overlook their spring sister sport, softball.

But Chatham softball has some success of their own.

With section titles in 2011 and 2019, along with 20 win seasons in 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017, the Cougars have represented themselves quite well in the past few years.

And this year, with as many as 8 underclassmen often in the starting lineup, there’s reason for optimism in Cougarland.

The current team leaders- Soph Katie Pignatello is currently batting .350, Junior Avery Andres is at .333 and Soph Maddie Huth is clipping at .304. Junior hurler Lara Thistlewaite is logging a very impressive 2.52 ERA.

Multi-sport athletes are not dead. And nobody is proving that more than the Bernards Mountaineers.

Currently ranked #5 in the NJ.com Top 20, Bernards topped #17 Bridgewater on Thursday 9-5 running their record to 6-0.

All 9 goals, and 6 of the assists, came from multi-sport Bernards athletes.

5 of the goals came out of the stick of Sophomore sensation Logan Stevens, with a pair apiece coming from Charlie Hunnewell and David Brothers.

Stevens ran for 676 yards this season for the 12-1 Bernards football team, Hunnewell went 27-4 on the wrestling mat, Brothers was also 27-4 as a wrestler and was in on 78 tackles on the gridiron.

It doesn’t stop there.

Jake Caldwell, a Babson commit for lacrosse, accounted for over 2000 all purpose yards on the gridiron and won 26 wrestling matches.
Logan Marks was in on 75 tackles and scored 281 points while grabbing 137 rebounds on the hardwood.

Almost every starter on the lacrosse team is also a football player.

Considering Bernards is a group 2 this may not be overly surprising, but what is absolutely remarkable is how exceptional their teams are. The Mountaineer football team is 36-7 since these seniors entered HS and Lacrosse is in the state top 5.

Now 5-2, Summit softball is off to their best start since 2019.

This week the Hillltoppers knocked off next-door neighbor New Prov 4-1 as 4 Hilltoppers- Kaitlyn Malloy, Caroline Putnam, Charlotte Yarnall and Maggie Franco each chipped in with a pair of hits.

One of the factors in Summit’s hot start has been frosh Charlotte Yarnall. Charlotte, who has pitched 41 of the 42 and ⅔’s innings the Hilltoppers have played, is ripping at a .500 clip with 2 HR’s and 3 doubles from the plate.

For NP, also now 5-2, Sophomore Annie Conover, who owns 522 career points on the hardwood, is leading the Pioneers with a .500 BA (9 for 18) and 2 HR’s.

With 39 goals in 8 games, SPF’s Juliana Doran is currently #2 in the state in scoring, just 1 behind the leader.

Juliana, who had 9 goals in a game earlier this season, currently has 135 for her career and oh btw, she’s still a junior.

A two-sporter, she had 5 goals and 4 assists last fall for the SPF soccer team, Juliana, a DewLax product, will ultimately be taking her talents west to one of the country’s most prestigious universities, Cal- Berkeley.

Cal Berkeley may be 3000 miles away but the Golden Bears have some local flavor on their women’s lacrosse team. There are two current players- Avery Hoft, a Soph from Westfield and Jane Middleton, a freshman from Chatham, are on the Golden Bear roster and current Chatham Senior Claire Englekraut will be joining them this fall.

Now three weeks into the season, underclassmen are beginning to make names for themselves.

Summit's 11-10 nine inning victory over GL was highlighted by a pair of standout sophomores whom we’re all going to hear a whole lot about over the next couple years.

The 21 run output was led by Summit’s Alex Schwark and GL’s Zach Geertsma who combined to go 6-8 with 4 dingers and 8 rbi.

Geertsma, who had 3 roundtrippers, became a known entity while hitting .387 as GL’s starting shortstop throughout the ‘23 season, but it looks like it's time for Schwark, now hitting .318 with 2 HR’s and a double, to go on the watch list too.

Alex is headed to some big days for the Hilltoppers, you know where else he is headed? Of course you do. He’s headed to Bubbakoos for his delectable PoG Burrito, and since he’s going to need a ride from his upperclassmen teammates, it works out well that they’ll be able to cash in on their 15% PoG Entourage discount.

GL Shortstop Zach Geertsma, a sophomore, is ripping a .567 batting average with 5 HR’s, a 1.33 Slugging percentage, a .649 OBA while thieving 7 bases.

A primary cog in the Highlander’s 8-1 start, Zach hails from one of the great GL sports families.

His father, Mike, was the goalie on GL’s 1979 Group 2 state champion soccer team and his brother Michael is a football and lacrosse standout for the Highlanders.

18/04/2024

On April 12, 2004 Usher’s “Yeah!” was the #1 song on the charts.

Until Tuesday, that also happened to be the last time Summit defeated GL in baseball.

You’re forgiven if you think of baseball as the shuttered stepchild to the Hilltoppers nationally recognized Lacrosse program, but take another look because Summit’s got themselves a ball club this year.

Led offensively by Villanova commit Luke Jacobsen and Ryan Barber (who is 16-32 this season) this team can score, but what really stood out on Tuesday is this squad’s defense.

On Tuesday Summit outlasted GL 11-10 in 9 innings mainly because the Hilltoppper played better in the field than the Highlanders. While GL was giving away runs, Summit was making the Highlanders earn every one of theirs.

Along with making the routine plays, Center Fielder Shane Walsh made a sensational running catch in left center that saved a minimum of 2 runs.

GL has an explosive offense. Zach Geertsma, currently hitting .567 with 5 dingers, had 3 HR’s in this game while Matt Shaffer, a career .394 hitter, went 3-5. And if you give them extra outs, as is typical in HS baseball, they’re going to throw double digit run tallies on you (something they’ve done 6 times in their 8-1 start).

Summit last won the Union County tournament in 1992. Westfield and GL are certainly the favorites for the title, but don’t sleep on the Hilltoppers this year.

Oddballs- When the Hilltoppers visit GL, perhaps the teams should switch dugouts. Google Maps show that the Berkeley Heights-Summit border actually runs from the home side on-deck circle out to centerfield. Essentially balls hit to right field go to Summit, while balls to left stay in BH. Check out the attached photo.
