In a crucial meeting held in Juba yesterday, the newly appointed Chief Administrator of the Pibor Administrative Area, Gola Boyoi Gola, made a heartfelt appeal. He urged the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, James Pitia Morgan, to take immediate steps to facilitate the repatriation of thousands of South Sudanese refugees currently residing in Dima, Ethiopia.

The head of police has announced that the fight against unauthorized currency traders will persist until the nation’s currency is stable in the market. This action comes after the Central Equatoria State government prohibited the trading of foreign currency outside of official channels. The goal is to manage the local currency’s volatility compared to the US dollar.

Speaking to reporters in Juba, Police Chief General Atem Marol Biar stated that those detained in the crackdown will face legal proceedings. “I want to assure you we are going to continue with doing the work, investigate with those who are selling Dollar in the black market until the date the governor will cancel the order,” declared General Biar.

Tragedy in Yambio County: Child’s Death Linked to Contaminated Water.

In a heartbreaking incident, a two-year-old child lost their life after accidentally falling into the contaminated Nagori stream in the Masiya area of Yambio County. Authorities report that the contamination occurred when a poisonous tree, allegedly cut down by an unknown person, fell into the stream. The toxic water not only claimed the child’s life but also led to the death of fish in the water. Our thoughts go out to the family affected by this devastating event.

South Sudan’s Agricultural Bank to Offer ‘Soft’ Loans to Farmers.

The Agricultural Bank of South Sudan has announced plans to provide fuel and tractors to farmers through a ‘soft’ loan arrangement. This initiative was confirmed during a visit by a bank delegation to two prominent agricultural farms in Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal State, aimed at evaluating their preparedness for the upcoming farming season.

The delegation, headed by the deputy chairman of the Bank’s Board of Directors, engaged with the cultivators at Tony-Chol Dura Farm and the Aweil Rice Scheme. Following the discussions, Information Minister Garang Zakariah Lual urged the private sector to invest in agriculture, emphasizing the sector’s potential for growth and profitability.

Bentiu Oil Refinery Set to Boost South Sudan’s Economy.

South Sudan’s Bentiu Oil Refinery, located in Unity State, is expected to be fully operational within the next 6 to 8 months. This development aims to supply the local markets with a significant capacity of 10,000 barrels of fuel products each day.

During a recent visit on Saturday, a high-level delegation, including Presidential Affairs Minister Joseph Bakosoro and NilePet Managing Director Eng. Bernard Amour, assessed the progress of the oil production, the construction of the refinery, and the environmental concerns related to oil extraction.

“We have seen the refinery. It needs some rehabilitation. Within 6 to 8 months from today, the refinery will be operational, the road will be constructed and fuel will be abundant in the market,” stated Mr. Bakosoro. He also mentioned that upgrading the refinery requires a substantial investment of about 30 to 35 million, though the currency was not specified.

The delegation emphasized the importance of addressing environmental impacts and ensuring compliance with regulations. The head of NilePet’s Board of Directors urged for measures to mitigate pollution, such as providing clean water to affected communities.

Eng. Bernard Amour highlighted that increasing the refinery’s output is crucial for alleviating economic challenges and supporting local communities. The refinery is set to produce various types of fuel, including heavy diesel, diesel, and asphalt.

“Refinery is one of our top priorities for 2024. I brought this delegation to have a first-hand look into what we have and what we need to build on, and how to address the current economic challenges,” Eng. Amour explained. He also acknowledged the impact of the Sudan conflict on South Sudan’s exports, positioning the refinery as a key element in strengthening the economy.

South Africa Commends Peace Progress in South Sudan.

In a recent visit to Juba, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s delegation observed the positive impact of the ceasefire agreement in South Sudan. Minister Naledi Pandor expressed satisfaction with the adherence to the ceasefire and the progress in unifying forces. “The ceasefire agreement is holding and threats to the country’s peace and stability have been reduced,” Pandor stated. She believes that the formation of unified security forces will further enhance the security situation. “His Excellency is encouraged that the parties remain committed to the revitalized agreement as the most viable vehicle to address the root causes of the conflict and to build sustainable peace in South Sudan,” she added. Pandor also emphasized South Africa’s ongoing support for South Sudan’s journey towards enduring peace.

Breaking News: Kenyan Military Chief Dies in Helicopter Crash.

Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Francis Ogolla, tragically lost his life when a KDF helicopter crashed in Sindar, Elgeyo-Marakwet County on Thursday afternoon. The incident was confirmed by President William Ruto.

In honor of the late military chief and nine other deceased senior officers, President Ruto has declared three days of national mourning. Additionally, flags will be flown at half-mast from Friday as a mark of respect.

South African President Ends Visit to Juba, Reaffirms Support for Peace and Upcoming Elections.

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa wrapped up his three-day trip today. He was updated on the peace agreement’s progress by President Salva Kiir Mayardit and other leaders involved.

They discussed the R-ARCSS peace deal signed on September 12, 2018. Dr. James Pitia Morgan, the Foreign Affairs Minister, thanked South Africa for its strong support on behalf of President Kiir.

South Africa’s International Relations Minister, Naledi Pandor, confirmed everyone’s strong commitment to the agreement. She stressed the need to stay focused on the peace efforts. This is to make sure South Sudan can have fair and open elections as planned in December 2024, following the extended transitional period’s plan set in August 2022.

Suspected Domestic Violence Murder in Yei County.

Yei County, Central Equatoria State – A man, who is a foreign national, is currently in custody for the alleged murder of his pregnant wife. The incident, which appears to be a case of domestic violence, occurred earlier this week.

The Chief Inspector of Police in Yei, Hissein Daud Jano, reported that the suspect was apprehended while trying to flee across the border into Uganda. “He locked up the woman in the room and beat her severely to death, she is a South Sudanese from Morobo County,” stated Chief Inspector Jano. He further mentioned, “According to a doctor’s report, the woman was left with 4 days to deliver on the 21st of this month.”

The region of Yei has seen a rise in domestic violence and su***de incidents, often linked to drug misuse and financial difficulties.

South Sudan and South Africa Leaders Discuss Strengthening Ties and Peace Efforts.

South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, held discussions with South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa. The talks aimed to reinforce the bond between the two countries and address key shared concerns.

After their initial meeting, the leaders, along with members of the SPLM-IO, joined the R-ARCSS High-level Standing Committee on the Road Map for a broader session. This meeting concentrated on evaluating the progress of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

In this extended session, President Ramaphosa and Vice President Machar recognized the advancements in enacting the R-ARCSS. They also explored the obstacles that have impeded the complete realization of the agreement and discussed potential solutions.

Man Dies from Suspected Poisoning by Homemade Alcohol in Lakes State.

In Lakes State, a 25-year-old man has died, suspected of alcohol poisoning from an illegal homemade drink known as “sheta-sheta.” This incident occurred over the weekend near the Malual-Akan neighborhood in Rumbek Town.

The police spokesperson for Lakes State, Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, stated that the man passed away suddenly after allegedly consuming this dangerous drink. Major Makuac described “sheta-sheta” as a homemade mixture of yeast, sugar, and ginger, which is not produced using standard distillation processes.

Additionally, Major Makuac announced the arrest of 42 individuals believed to be involved in the distribution or possession of this illicit alcohol.
