This universe of golden-yellow bubbles is actually a sample of marine phytoplankton called Phaeocystis.

The tiny yellow dots on each ball are individual algal cells forming hollow spherical colonies that can develop into large blooms. In 2005, researchers Rebecca Gast, Julie Rose, and Dawn Moran collected these samples with a plankton tow net in Antarctica’s Ross Sea.

Gast's research focuses on developing techniques to study the biodiversity and physiology of protists and microbes in extreme environments.

This , we’re putting the spotlight on the Scythe Butterflyfish 🔦

Did you know that this rare and elusive fish was discovered by Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists? The species was first discovered in 1954 near Mexico’s Guadalupe Island by Andres Rechnitzer, a student of former Scripps professor Carl Hubbs. The fish was named and described by both scientists in 1958. The striking scythe-shaped black marking on its side inspired the name Scythe Butterflyfish.

Native to the waters around the entire Baja California peninsula and up the Southern California coast, these unique fish prefer to live in rocky reef habitats that have plenty of nooks and caves to hide in.

In 1999, two aquarists collected the current pair of Scythe Butterflyfish that are still on display today — meaning they have lived at the aquarium for 23 years! This fish species even served as the original logo for Birch Aquarium from 1992 to 2012. 🐠 Spot this species on your next visit to in the Hall of Fishes!

Hello again Digital-Reefers! Just another quick update about the site... I'm now working on adding information to some of the fish profiles at species level. For an example, check out the profile below. As ever, open to constructive criticism. I realise there's a long way to go! Oh I've also converted all thumbnail images to act as links, so mobile use should be easier.

Hey folks. I'm now up to 780 species in the fish galleries on my site, many now with multiple extra images on the final species level page (to show different sexes, phases, variants etc). As it stands I think this already makes the site one of the largest collections of its kind out there... and yes, every single one of these images was hand-picked and originally taken by me... they aren't just cobbled from other places around the web like many other sites I could mention. I'm also working hard to add information profiles that blend info from multiple high quality sources so this is an evolving part of the site. I'm definitely open to help though, so take a browse and if you see something feel free to comment. Play your part and help me make Digital-Reefs the world class online research resource that responsible reef-keepers deserve!
