Phenomenal two day event in Durham, NC. Attendees from all corners of NC and VA law enforcement, as well as military. Another great group to work with and we are very excited to continue building skillcraft with this crew in follow on open enrollments in Durham.
Profession vs. Purpose
This job can be all consuming. While the team and department will always need us, we are 100% replaceable. Where we are not replaceable is at home. Be present, not just physically. Be emotionally available to your children, your wife. Choose to take time off for them.
Our profession is to provide safety for our communities to thrive. Our purpose is to provide a loving home for our families to thrive.
Don't lose your purpose for your profession.
Tactical Porcupine vs locking down angles:
For whatever reason, many new operators feel more comfortable bunching together and trying to move through a room. What this ends up in is a lack of control of angles. Reference the first photo. If schmuckateli comes around the back right barricade, who will he see first? The guy who's technically holding that barricade? No - he'll see the side of the guys head that's holding the left barricade.
In the second photo - the crew actually locks down their exposed angles, respectively. No one is coming around any corner without seeing a homie with a muzzle pointed directly at him - no sides of the head. This is optimal - but as the second photo shows, this requires geographical awareness. The operator on the right is both outpacing his buddy plating him from behind and he's moving forward, not laterally. This forward movement prematurely cuts off the operator on the left's clean angle on his barricade and can quickly become unsafe. While their movement is correct, what you're seeing is two safety violations developing: self-sweep/buddy sweep and over exposure. BE SPATIALLY AWARE - THAT'S ON YOU.
If a dude is beginning to move unsafely, everyone is a Range Safety Officer, and can call a "Reset" or "Stop" or whatever safe word you and your work wives agree on.
Recap:
- Don't tactical porcupine. Lock down respective angles.
- If a dude begins moving somewhere he shouldn't, stop the movement and verbally reset if needed to make the situation safe for shooters. He owes a case of beer after.

Wrapped up Greenville, NC Open Enrollment yesterday. In just 2 days of training, officers still in FTO we're capable of running with senior SRT team members, cleanly and safely making entry, assessing threat angles in a room, seeing who is exposed to what, and problem solving their way through it to mitigate these threat angles without dropping them or positioning themselves somewhere that is not actually covering the angle their partner was exposed to.
Thank you fellas for a strong two days of work. We could see the confidence and competence build from the first run to the last. Great work!
Our hearts are deeply saddened by the events that transpired yesterday at 1:30 PM EST in Charlotte, NC. The entire Blue community stands with you. As first line public safety this is always in our minds as a possibility, yet we go anyway. Our brothers went anyway. For the good and safety of our communities.
To Sam Poloche, Joshua Eyer, Alden Elliot, and our fallen brother of the U.S. Marshals Service. You held the line. You held the legacy that goes before you and we now continue your legacy.
To the families, to , and to the entire city of Charlotte, we pray for healing and are with you.

Never be out of your element.
If you could be called to do it, it better be in your wheel house.
Rural movement, land navigation, tracking. These aren't reserved for just the military. Be proficient.

What does DT look like for your department? Are you able to effectively control non-compliant individuals regardless of the situation?
How does the introduction of a non-compliant unarmed individual affect your team's movement? Does it become a dogpile? Do other threats get dropped? Do you train for the most likely situation? Or the worst possible day?

VI's are generally considered safer than conducting a warrant search of a violent offender's home. While it may be safer for officers and while we are able to choose the location, it's important to remember that many of these VI's may occur where public safety is primary concern.
Therefore high rep and high quality training are just as important as an officer's ability to make an appropriate tactical decision.
CQC is sexy, but it is only one part of a much larger picture. Full operations require your ability to set up covertly and advantageously until YOUR team is ready to initiate. Red force should never have the luxury of dictating when the action will begin.

Basic SWAT course was a success! Great work to the fellas putting in a full week of solid effort, learning and developing themselves in this profession.
Thanks to the NCTOA for being such a remarkable asset for tactical law enforcement in the state!

Standoff.
How close are you to the threat, especially in a cross-pan? Many people assume the purpose of standoff is to give you some extra space from a pretty close threat angle. While it certainly does reduce your exposure angle, standoff also importantly gives your buddy a safer and cleaner field of fire on his angle. If you decide to get all nice and intimate with that angle and not leave a standoff space, your buddy is going to be hard pressed to effectively cover that angle without taking shots uncomfortably close to your noggin nugget or barrel of your weapon.
Moral of the story - closing the distance usually ends up hindering your team more than helping. Give it some breathing room.
Darkness is not created; it is merely the absence of light. In the same way, sin is the absence of God in His people's hearts.
In this profession, facing the worst of that sin, it is understandable to question, "Where is God?"
In our creation, we were given freedom. To choose salvation or destruction. We chose the latter. A destruction that we could never atone for or free ourselves of, so God did it for us. He gave us the gift of resurrection while we were dead in our sins, defeating that darkness that grips our world. But it still is a choice; to remain hidden in the dark or stand in the light.
It is important to remember that while our profession is trusted to provide the physical protection of our communities, we must also not ignore the spiritual war being fought in our hearts. What good is it to save this world but lose our souls?
Regardless of your belief, healthy spirituality is a hallmark and force multiplier of a proficient operator. Whatever that looks like for you, be intimately in touch with that which is greater than you.
As Easter approaches, especially for Christians, take an opportunity to reflect on what this miracle means for you and the world. Look at the world with the same compassion Jesus did; love the world and love your Father who created and redeemed it for you.

You wanted another cool guy video?
Sound on for reality.
Clean external movements need to follow the same principles as internal clearance in regards to reducing angle exposure.
The 90's SWAT stack is antiquated. We don't need 18 guys stacked on a door. Think about how to employ folks better. Do we have containment set on the building? What about isolation to protect us from the suspects friend's from engaging us from surrounding buildings. We need to be able to process and understand EVERY angle exposure. Look for work. Do what makes sense.
*this is a range photo - not an actual kit set up
But for the sake of discussion, what are you doing to break up image on your equipment? Especially straight lines and round objects. Heavy rubber bands and natural flora fix a lot of that. Just make sure the flora matches the immediate location and is facing the correct wayđ€Ł
Full disclosure: the writer of this post is not a sniper. Just a knuckle eating operator who can barely speak proper English. Apologies to our sniper cell cadre if I butchered y'alls sniper nerd stuff. You know I try to do y'all justice đ

Surgical Algorithmic Processing Speed Knowing and fully understanding priorities of threat and proximity of threat switches you from someone who sees a room the way everyone else sees it (bed, dresser, couch, etc) to a surgical operator who processes algorithmically in 1âs and 0âs. Processing speed shoots through the roof, decision making latency is reduced, and you begin to see threat angles you otherwise wouldâve missed or not even considered a threat in the first place. Having teammates who have assertive body language while flowing through the house is paramount for economy of motion and fluidity. Imagine pulling up to a 4 way intersection with three other cars and everyone is sending mixed signals on what their intentions are? How frustrating is that? No different in the house. Be distinctive in your movements, make your intentions clear based on body language so we donât have to have a committee meeting in front of every door. đ„: @thebryanmariani @trey_sawyer28 @nrcconsulting #legacytactics #cqb #cqc #lawenforcement #swat #military #specialoperations #specialforces #navyseal #sof #guns #hunting #homedefense #tactical #tacticalgear

Besides ignoring the opposing open door, what principle issues are we seeing here? These are students, speed is also not something weâre going to hit on.
Instructors need to get a baseline before classes. Before beginning training, we do a non-instructed cold hit to assess where the team is in their knowledge and to see what we need to focus on to smooth things out and make them more efficient. Every team is different. Training should be malleable and tailored to the team.
Vehicle Bail Out Drill - not very realistic for CONUS work. But, still a lot of fun especially when youâve got a flight to catch and have ammo to get rid of. đ Other updates, the Legacy team has been hard at work learning new languages and communication techniques to be able to reach the next generation of operators - straight bussinâ. No cap. Based.
Patrols can't always be clandestine. Sometimes, they're just a walk in the woods with friends, making meme jokes. âĄđ€
Working on the basics of woodland rural patrolling to target. Every operation has 5 phases; insert, infill, actions at the objective, exfil, and extract. While exfil and extract may not apply so much in law enforcement, your ability to effectively arrive and set up shop on a target in a clandestine manner and initiate the operation on your terms all depend on your tactical abilities the moment you step out of the vehicles. These are all things that Legacy is constantly testing and developing and is ready to share with you!
Training under NODs and in conditions you aren't used to can result in some funny moments for instructors, but very serious problems if this happens in real-world operations. Do yourself and your team a favor; spend your time practicing and refining basic skills under new and stressful conditions. Sloppiness kills. Be tight and clean 24/7 with your movements. Equipment will not save you from being a sloperator. Don't be a sloperator.
