While we are on the topic of fear-based marketing that preys on consumers, let’s talk about another situation: the non-GMO project “verified” label.

First: GMOs are organisms that have had genes altered or introduced in order to confer some new trait. These include genes that extend shelf-life, slow down the browning process, add additional nutrients, etc. GMOs have decades of data behind them to demonstrate they are safe, nutritious, and beneficial to the producer, consumer, and even the environment. GMOs are NOT dangerous or something to avoid.

The Non-GMO Project is a private organization that sells a label to any companies willing to pay for it. There is no regulation for this or standards to uphold. This means that companies who purchase this “label” mark their products as “verified” as having no GMO ingredients in them, in order to increase the price tag for consumers.

What’s even more frustrating is that companies will purchase this label for foods that don’t even have a GMO option. Remember, there are only 10 crops in the US that have GMO options approved by the FDA: potatoes, soybeans, alfalfa, summer squash, papaya, sweet corn (not popcorn), sugar beets, apples, cotton, and canola. So if you see a product labeled non-GMO that doesn’t contain these items, it’s completely irrelevant and is simply being used to suggest competitor brands are inferior. Tomatoes? No GMO tomatoes current exist. Popcorn? None of that either. And the Non-GMO project will sell the label to companies to put on products that don’t even have genes to modify, like table salt! Table salt is sodium chloride, an ionic compound, which is 1) not an organism and 2) has no genes.

This insidious marketing tactic preys on consumers at the expense of their wallets and propagates a fear that is completely unfounded and not based in any scientific data. Please don’t fall for it.
