Fargo opens new $5.4M fire station at nearly 7% under budget
The grand opening for Fargo Fire Department Fire Station 8 at 6617 33rd St. S., was held Wednesday, Oct. 23, with an open house for the public.
Fire Chief Steve Dirksen said the new station was 13 years in the making.
“Fire Station 8 is more than just a new building, it's an investment in the safety and well being of the citizens of Fargo,” he told firefighters and city officials who gathered.

What's it like to be homeless in Fargo? Woman who sleeps downtown shares a day in her life
Fargo's homeless residents, many of whom are more visible than ever in the downtown area, go about their daily lives surrounded by unique struggles and traumas.
Photojournalist Anna Paige and reporter Melissa Van Der Stad joined one such person on Tuesday, Oct. 8, to document the daily realities of being homeless. To get a genuine understanding of their life, they did not intervene in any of the day's events.
On Fargo’s streets, 72-year-old Lowrie Hogenson welcomed The Forum into her world to raise awareness of the urgency of her situation, and that of her newfound family amongst the unhoused community.

In Kathy Johnson’s line of work, losing yourself is the name of the game.
Johnson owns and operates the Great Straw Maze in the north-east corner of the West Acres parking lot. The maze opened on Sept. 4 and will remain open through October.
Spread out over an acre of blacktop, Johnson and her family double-stacked more than 1,400 bales of hay eight feet high. Inside are twists and turns and along the way pieces for a scavenger hunt that leads to a prize if you find all 12 hints and piece together the puzzle.

Turning a liability into an asset, here's how flood lands became nature parks south of Fargo
What once drew people to live in areas south of Fargo are the same qualities that attract people to the nature parks today: the meandering Red River, stretches of prairie grass, heavily wooded areas, and plentiful wildlife, birds and butterflies.
Dave Bietz, deputy director of operations for the Park District, said while people are accustomed to seeing wide open green space, manicured turf, playgrounds, basketball courts and picnic shelters in the traditional neighborhood parks in Fargo, the nature parks offer something different.

The Kindred and Central Cass cross country teams run into the Squirrels' football stadium Friday to finish out a 28-mile relay run from Kindred to Casselton to deliver the game ball ahead of Friday night's homecoming clash between No. 1-ranked Kindred and No. 2 Central Cass.
Organized by Squirrels senior cross country captain Emery Holland, the run served as a fundraiser for Central Cass teacher and volleyball coach Dana Stansbery and retired Kindred teacher and coach Polly Roe, both of whom are currently battling cancer.
