"He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruits in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away." Psalm 1:3-4 ESV

Yesterday I mentioned how the love for God's law is not legalism in of itself, but only when you believe that it saves you. This analogy of a tree is not anything reminiscent of prosperity gospel where your actions and behaviors should reap blessings or curses upon you. Yes, our actions have consequences, but the beauty of God's grace and Jesus' death and resurrection is that he is making us into this tree. If you are in Christ, then you will turn into this tree and you shall be known by your fruits (Matthew 7:20). The Gospel message is a simple one, yet profound: repent and believe, bending knee to King Jesus, and you shall be among the saints, declared righteous and holy, set apart as God's precious possession.

"but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night." Psalm 1:2 ESV

A love for the law of God is not a legalistic thing to have; believing that it brings you salvation if followed by yourself is legalism. Because of grace, of Jesus' life having perfectly followed the law, we are then enabled to practice the law without the pressure of needing to do so. Paul addresses this in Romans: "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? May it never be! How can he who died to sin still live in it?" (Romans 6:1-2) It is the law of God that tells us right from wrong, an objective truth meant for our joy-- not our suffering. The Father is not trying to keep a good thing from us; rather, he is trying to lead us into the fullness of life: joy from the grace and peace that flows freely from Christ.
